MacHeist (http://macheist.com/) and TouchArcade (http://toucharcade.com) are co-hosting an iPhone app launch party (http://iphonelaunchparty.com/) at this year's WWDC. The event to be held tonight will provide some demos and previews of some upcoming iPhone apps and games and will be streamed live starting at around 9:30 p.m. Pacific.

Some of iPhone apps to be demoed include: Delicious Library (http://www.delicious-monster.com/) for iPhone, Real Racing (http://www.firemint.com/realracing/index.html), a new Freeverse (http://freeverse.com/) game as well as the just announced Doom Resurrection from id software (http://www.idsoftware.com/) and Escalation Studios (http://www.escalationstudios.com/). The game uses existing assets from Doom 3 but applies them to an entirely new iPhone game with brand new levels:

The Live stream should kick in around 9:30 p.m. and will be linked from the website (http://iphonelaunchparty.com/).

EDIT: Oh, I guess Doom Classic is on its way as well!

This. looks. awesome! A question for any of you experts out there: What is it going to take to get some decent lighting in games designed for the iPod/iPhone?

Good lighting really helps to set the atmosphere for games like Doom... or any game for that matter. I wonder if the new 3Gs hardware can handle some complex lighting effects... hmm.

I wonder if Doom Resurrection will use Open GL 2.0, thereby leaving iPhone 3g users in the dark.... hmm... that would be an interesting turn of events

Yeah, I know. There was no reason to update the weapons ... but this Doom Classic port is going to be great.

To my surprise, Christian was able to dig up the original high quality source material for the Doom sounds, so we have 22khz 16 bit sound effects instead of the 11khz 8 bit ones from the original game.

And GPU accelerated filtering, 24-bit lightning.

Good lighting really helps to set the atmosphere for games like Doom... or any game for that matter. I wonder if the new 3Gs hardware can handle some complex lighting effects... hmm.

The 3GS hardware falls sort of in the average PC hardware that was released in between Doom 2 and Doom 3 releases, a bit closer to the 3 than the 2. Doom 3 required 1.5 GHz CPU, 384 MB RAM, and a DirectX 9.0b compatible 64 MB video card with OpenGL 2.0 drivers.

I wonder if Doom Resurrection will use Open GL 2.0, thereby leaving iPhone 3g users in the dark.... hmm... that would be an interesting turn of events

Why would they do that? So nobody buys the game? Just to get a couple of pieces of extra eye candy in there?

All in all, one day, the iPhone will support 3.0 or something similar to those standards. The App Store will have to account for this, and future, upgrades. Like other games, there will be a need of minimum hardware requirements. They'll just be a lot simpler to follow than Vista-capable stickers and Minimum/Recommended listings.

I suppose this will be a 3GS only app?I assume it will support the older phones as the 3G S installed base will be quite small by comparison for a while (most people who want to upgrade have to wait for their contracts to "mature", for one thing). So it wouldn't make good financial sense for it to be 3G S only, it'll probably just run at a slower frame rate and with not quite as fancy effects on the older models.

Nine Inch Nails' former drummer, Chris Vrenna, composed and performed the game's theme song.

Too bad the audio sucks. At first it was too loud and distorted, now it's phasing up and down quickly and on average too quiet.

A question for any of you experts out there: What is it going to take to get some decent lighting in games designed for the iPod/iPhone?

This (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=310897051&mt=8) has what I consider decent lighting. However, it's computed once at the start of the game and doesn't change until a new game is started. It's possible to have realtime dynamic lighting, and some games do, but it takes CPU power that is often better spent on other things. The iPhone 3GS shouldn't have any problems with it though.

Looks like the Quake III engine with low-resolution textures. I'm not sure how the controls will work, but the demo video was pretty...has some kick ass potential. I can't imagine that they would limit it to iPhone 3GS models. I think developers will have to start coding two separate versions of graphical applications--one with old fixed-function OpenGL 1.1 calls and crappy textures, the other with shader-only code (OpenGL 2) and multitexturing.

Edit: oh, apparently it is not even built for OS 3.0.

And since you did the logic thing, I'll do the research thing and cite a source (http://www.macworld.com/article/141094/2009/06/doomresurrection.html?lsrc=rss_news) to back you up.

Carmack said the project will run on iPhones and iPod touches running on iPhone OS 2.x; the company plans an update in the future that will exploit some iPhone OS 3.x features, as well.

All you gamers out there --- just wait another 3-4 months until a major developer creates a new game from the ground up with OpenGL ES 2.0 and the new hardware in mind! It will be awesome..

And the people who worry that the new hardware bifurcates the market:

1) Game developers are used to creating gaming engines that dynamically scale lighting, texture, and polygon count for different performance profiles..

2) Most importantly, you have to remember that previous to the iPhone, the only way to make any money in mobile phone gaming was by supporting a dozen platforms running on 100 different devices --- all with varying hardware!

Having to maintain titles on two different sets of iPhone hardware is nothing! But because using the full set of OpenGL 2.0 capabilities requires a lot of work that doesn't apply to the OpenGL 1.0 version, so don't expect to see that type of work in $2 games.

That's the biggest problem with iPhone games, smearing your finger around the screen to try and play them...

Do games designers realize that having your hand in the way of the screen can detract from the gameplay somewhat!

Wolfenstein wasn't bad, we had a little virtua-pad thing... maybe the camera can look at your fingers and see which way they're pointing!
possibly...

Is it just me, or does that game look hard as **** to control? The aim cursor is pretty much flying all over the screen throughout the whole demo, rarely coming over an enemy.

Anyone think a Quake III port will come? I know someone ported it to PocketPC a while ago. I tried it out on my Palm Treo. If they can do something Doom 3-esque, they can certainly to Quake III, RTCW, UT99 (GOTY)... the list goes on. :D

If anyone can push the iPhone to its limits, it's John Carmack. The initial release will be available to all three generations, with an update that is exclusive to the 3Gs soon after. Immediately after that, a percentage of the previous generation owners will complain about the update and how they can't run it.

I believe they are already competing. Both of my girls (5 and 7) are getting the latest touch as soon as it's released. They wanted DSs until I showed them the touch. Now they want the touch. It works for me because I already have all our Music and Movies in itunes. Were talking a library that is quickly approaching a TB of movies. We have also seen several Disney games released for the touch (including - Pixie Hollow) that my girls can not wait to play. If there was a Hannah Montana game it would be all over but the shouting. Consider Carmack said this just after the announcement of the 3GS:

So what did excite the veteran developer this week? "I'm personally more excited by the $99 iPhone announcement that the 3G S," he said. "I'd be happier seeing them sell 50 million of the base model than pushing the specs up."

I'm pretty sure he's going to be programming all iPhone games to work on the regular iPhone and iPhone 3G, and not take advantage of any special 3GS features. He seems to favor a larger user base than just focusing on the 3GS with more speed and better graphics.
