View Full Version : Snow Leopard runs amazingly wonderfultastically on the Air

I installed Snow Leopard, latest developer preview, on my RevA Macbook Air (80GB/1.6GHz), and it runs FAST. Install was ~6GB in size, took about 25 minutes, and was even easier than installing leopard (I didn't think that was possible). So far, I am loving what I see. Great work Apple.

It seems very stable. I have used the iPhone 3.0 Snow Leopard SDK with success already, and have had no crashes or hangs. I have not done video conversion, but the quicktime interface is great. I like how the borders go away so its just a floating video. Also, playing video from the thumbnail is quick, and pretty sweet. Useless, but sweet.

Can you test Mail.app? I had a problem with earlier builds in which Mail.app wont remember the size of the window I set. Everytime i exit the app or minimize it, it changes the window size back to default

It loads the previous window size on every launch, looks like they fixed your bug.

Sitting idle here the CPU is at 110(F). 165 degrees after watching a 5 minute youtube with the fan at 2500 RPM. When using skype video chat and watching a quicktime movie, temps maxed at 170 degrees, then the fan kicked up and they went down to ~165.

CoolBook isn't compatible. This is my only gripe with Snow Leopard. I'm simply browsing the web and the machine is running at 6200RPM and 70 degrees Celsius. Quicktime stutters quite often now, too. CoolBook was really a godsend.

I haven't used much as far as 3rd party apps yet. Skype works fine, Office 2008 seems to be working fine, and obviously the included Safari 4 is working great. I am going to install my 3rd party arsenal when I get home.

Is this a new scale? Snappyness -> wonderfultastical -> Zippymondo -> ?
Presumably the 43 second start up and 4 second shut down are smaller for MacBooks and MacBook Pros? Or are the MacBooks range giving similiar values?

I did a clean install on my rev B SSD, and this puppy flies.
I am really liking exchange integration, and you can set up more than one which is even better than outlook, LOL MS.
Shutdown is SICK, like 1-2 sec, and it's off, at first i thought it died LOL.

You beat me to it!! I did it earlier today and I must say this may be the update that turns the air around. It runs great even on the Rev. A, 1.6 80gb. I went from ~43gb to 55 somehow, without doing a clean install. I have this much space because I stream music from an external because I had been originally running out of space, but I may throw it back on now :D. I really must say how much this is a great update and I'm glad I pulled the trigger. I'm running youtube HD trailers and they look good for me without any annoying fan or heat issues. Hmmm... maybe this MBA still has a few tricks up its sleeve and we just may see its lifeline expand or apple uses the architecture in place and creates a truly amazing mobile device. To be honest I am now finally very happy I went with the MBA... I don't think I could trade this portability and function for anything else now and this is coming from a Rev. A second month owner :) bravo apple

Hopefully. There are 55 current issues they are working on for version 3.3 (the version that will support Snow Leopard). They have completed development of 13 of them, so the version is 24% done with development. There is no estimated release date right now either.

Yeah, and this was tied to Java (cyberduck uses 1.5, Snow Leop. has 1.6). Shouldn't effect many apps that use Objective-C and cocoa, mostly Java apps will take a hit if anything.

Any ideas? and is there any backdoor option to formate my os disk and run the installation totally clean from the begining? like the WinXP whit formate before installing it on disk?

have you tried pressing C when booting? That's how it loads the installation wizard
I have another problem. I have 2 HDDs, one Hitachi that came with the MacBook and one Scorpio black. I have 10.5.7 on scorpio. I took it out and put back in the hitachi where I installed snow leopard. But when I put the Scorpio back in, it now takes a long time to boot for 10.5.7.. Anyone knows how to fix this?

I personally never use the remote drive, too slow and cumbersome. Might be in your best interest in picking one up so you can get it working, I bet that will fix your kernel panic issue.

I don't get that far. As soon as I select the Mac OS X install, my PC tells me it's "waiting for MacBook Air to start up" and then the gears on the Apple logo screen eventually stops turning and I just get the kernel panic.

Uhh, it seems that its only the mac leopard snow disc that can be booted on startup. I can go inn and install it again or do some disk testing and so, you folks know what I'm talking about.
I was able do delete my os disk and clean it out, but when i restarted my computer and the original mac osx cd was inserted to the superdrive, it was just like before but whit out the option to boot from Macintosh HD disk.
I tried also a fresh installation of mac osx snow, and hoped that booting from my original mac osx cd would work as maybe the "live" snow update may have corrupted or crashed something on the drive or system, but no, the same ***** thing whit original mac osx cd & boot loop appeared.
I tried the cd in my macpro and it booted whit it whit no problems, so its not the disc..
Its like that the leopard snow installation made my macbookair not able to boot older mac versions to setup and install.
It seems like I have to send in my MBA to a local apple repair center, but what the heck should i say, that i got a copy of snow and was hyped on seeing how it looked and wanted a little taste of what is going to be my main OS in a few months???

What i can do is run the leopard snow disk, run the Disk Utillity and erase the disk good and send it in for repair and say that it will not boot whit the factory cd's..

Well, if it's any consolation, I can't downgrade either. I thought it was just because I was trying to install it using Remote Install OS X, but apparently you just can't downgrade from Snow Leopard. There aren't really any guides, as there aren't very many people who are using it. I think completely erasing the disk is a good idea though, and should work.

I did a clean install on a rev b 1.6 HD air by partitioning the installed HD. Kept my old install and can boot into either one. I love it. Most of the leopard app folder works. Some of the software has to be installed onto the new partition but overall I am happy with the way it is working. The performance boost was moderate with the testing I've done so far. I'm guessing that the HD is the cause of my lack of substantial performance gain.
Where can I find the benchmark software everyone is using?
And any input as to long term side effects of what I did are welcome.
I'm hoping that when I tire of playing with a half baked product I can just delete the partition and expand the Leopard one back to full.

Makes sense since people have been complaining about Apple still using an old EFI standard, rather than the newer one which is finally supported in Windows 7.

The quick shutdown speed I see on Leopard as well. But maybe that's probably just the 2.13Ghz SSD model. Can't wait for Snow Leopard though.
Isn't the trimmed size due to them not needing to install all the powerpc files as well and only intel now?
Also, I'm curious about something. I just switched back to Mac after a year on PC and haven't kept up to date on the upcoming Snow Leopard features. I heard it supports GPU acceleration for QuickTime and other things. Does it also support GPU acceleration for flash? That would make a huge difference in temps on the MBA.

This is where time machine works wonders. I just use a time machine back up to restore back to 10.5... i dunno if you can downgrade 10.6 -> 10.5

Yeah SL updates the EFI on your main drive, which means it can no longer boot into 10.5, which is a pain. The only way to downgrade it to go into Disk Utility from the Leopard installer and reformat your hard drive. Then you can install Leopard.

Any battery life tests? Since SL is all 64-bit, doesn't the battery really take a hit? My friend wants SL on her MBA and me as well on my MBP. I just need to know about battery life, is it better or worse than Leopard. Or same.

No GPU acceleration for flash, that stuff doesn't exist, Mac or PC.

I saw increases in battery life on my rev C using Snow Leopard. its not like double the life but there was a noticeable 30 minutes or so increase

That's pretty good. I just want to make sure my battery life won't decrease with installing SL. I'll be sure to tell my friend that too. Thanks! :)

No, September I believe. Some folks were Beta testers.
All sound promising and should be a big benefit to the MBA!

For some reason, the Apple store decided that they would charge my card $21.06 for my previous order ("up to date") for 2 Snow Leopard DVD's.
Not sure why they chose August 3rd to finally charge my card when I ordered over a month ago. Suspicious. Did Snow Leopard ship today?

No - I just received another Beta from apple 3 days ago - so it's not finished yet...

They only just allowed pre-orders, so maybe that's why? Charge once Apple allows pre-orders from 3rd party retailers like Amazon.

Snow Leopard seed 10a432 is supposed to be the Gold Master - this has been reported all over the web.
Anyways just wanted everyone to know that Apple is sending all beta testers a dvd copy of 10a432 - for bug testing - and the usual error submission procedures are in place.
So either Apple is sending all testers a free copy of the new OS - or 10a432 is not the final build.
Since all Canadian testers won't be receiving their dvd's until mid next week via DHL - it seems odd if this was still a beta, because our feedback would not be seen until only a couple weeks before its formal release - which isn't really enough time for pre-release bug fixes.
Anyways - testers are also provided a direct download link for the dvd's - so if 10a432 IS the RTM - then expect some legitimate reviews of it on the MBA to be on this site BEFORE the official release.

I just want to report that the latest Snow Leopard release is running great still. Startup and shutdown times are a hair faster actually. I have had absolutely 0 beach balls or hangs. Everything is running smoothly.
I have XCode installed with the latest iPhone SDK (3.1) and did some compilation of applications I am working on. Overall it was very fast, and the system remained very responsive. I really like what I continue to see with SL.

I plan to get it the day it comes out since I JUST got my air. It will cost me $10 supposedly because I got it after June, and there is that whole update system...
I have SSD and 2.13GHz, boot up times are instant already, getting even faster would be crazy! I am excited for quicktime X. Is the new quicktime nice? Can it run AVI's?

I now have official Snow Leopard installed on my Air. Fresh install, and it still works great. Boots fast, shuts down fast, and is very responsive. Thus far I am very pleased.

Before and after
You gained about 7 GB of space just like everyone else. Nobody truly "gained" the space they're reporting.
I keep seeing all these people report that they gained anywhere from 13GB to 28GB of space back, but they're all seriously incorrect.
Snow Leopard counts the size of the disk differently than Leopard. This has been reported elsewhere, yet everyone keeps reporting how much space they "gained," even journalists who reviewed Snow Leopard.
Check your disk's capacity. It went up by 8.3 GB. You're not really recovering that 8.3 GB of space... the portion of your drive being used by your OS, apps, and files is still the same. So, an app or file that supposedly took 1GB of space before is now taking more than 1GB of space.
The more space someone reports "gaining" back is directly related to the size of the HDD/SSD. Everyone is really getting approximately 7 GB of space back. The rest is all disk reporting size differences between Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Instead of checking how much "available" space, people should be calculating the difference in how much space is being used versus the percentage of drive space that the used amount is. They could then calculate the true "gained" space.
The capacity change doesn't truly gain any space, it's just a way the disk is reported. Do a Google search and read about it.

hmm 5GB less used space, 8GB more drive space. My math says 13GB of more space to fill up on the exact same PC, I didn't delete any content, that space can be filled now. See my attachments above. I'm not really arguing, just seeing the glass half full.

No, you're flat out wrong. There is about 7 GB of "extra" space available now. Your apps and files are all reporting using more space than they were before. A 1 GB file before is now taking more than 1 GB. A 1 GB app before is now taking more than 1 GB. It's a reporting issue. You are freeing up the 7 GB of space that Leopard PPC files were on drive. That 7 GB is the only "extra" space available.
Do a simple Google search about it, and you should be able to do the math in your head in a few minutes. Snow Leopard is reporting disk size differently which is OBVIOUS. You see it in the "capacity" reported right there in your own screen shots. The capacity of your drive is NOT changing in ANY way. That extra capacity is NOT freeing space for files, apps, or OS. It's merely how the drive is reporting space.
The bigger the drive, the more supposed "free" space being reported. I cannot believe everyone is reporting this. You're all smarter than this... I know because you're using Macs.
True "gained" space is only the approximately 7 GB of PPC files being removed in Snow Leopard... the "gained" capacity of reported disk size change is NOT freed space but only a change in the way Snow Leopard reports drive's capacity. I cannot believe that this is not being pointed out.

Whilst agreeing with you both and just wanting to make it clear in case there was still any confusion, from bbotte's own screenshots:
Space Used Before: 61173301248 bytes
Space Used After: 51613122560 bytes
Difference: 9560178688 bytes
AKA 8.90GiB "old style" or 9.56GB "new style".
Which is still a sizeable chunk.

I installed the new version of BootCamp on my Windows 7 partition on the MacBook Air. The biggest thing is the ability to read the Mac OS partition while in Windows which is a god send. I'm simply amazed at how well Snow Leopard and Windows 7 run on the Air, especially with an SSD drive. I believe this is a testament to solid hardware. :)

No, this is different than glass is half empty vs glass is half full. This is the fact that people are clueless and instead of wanting to learn the truth they would prefer to be ignorant. Your reported capacity is changing, but actual capacity is not truly changing. SL isn't capable of adding back mythical space by formatting differently. Everyone is getting the 7 GB back from removal of PPC files. The rest is due to the way SL reports capacity. Hence, we read some saying 13 GB gained and others 25 GB gained, but that's just due to a larger drive will report more available. I will be done with this now, because it's apparent that people would prefer to believe that Apple has somehow improved formatting and is creating new space and improving a disk's capacity, in addition to removing 7 GB worth of PPC files, and that's their illusion!

I guess it depends what you had in your OS before the upgrade. If you had a slim install withot all the languages and printer drivers you may not save as much. Maybe?

Rev A here, the SL is working fine, but I did notice that expose and new Quicktime playing WMV and AVI though Flip4Mac and Perian show considerable sluggishness compared to what it used to be before. In fast using, QT7 Pro under SL, the same videos still play smoothly, so it's more of a Quicktime X fault I guess.
Still though, Expose being so chuggy where it essentially looks the same as before when it was perfectly smooth, is disappointing. Could it be that I need new drivers for Intel X3100?

Oddly, it's the total disk capacity, not the free space, which is being reported errantly...
Disk Utility is reporting the SSD as having 121.3GB available (new-fangled base-10 calculation), with a single OS X partition occupying slightly less than 121GB of that.
It should have had 122.1GiB available before, and 128GB available now, should it not? Is there some SSD-voodoo going on here? Confused!
EDIT: Ahh, discrepancy explained... ignore me.
Rev. A 64GB SSD shows up as 59.68GB in Snow Leopard? (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=777258)
