I want to sell my iPhone to buy the 3GS but i have been on the 3.0 betas for 2 months now and went GM today and want to go back to 2.2 to unlock to sell it for more. Is it still possible to unlock after downgrading or is the baseband changed and cant be unlocked? I thought only 3G iPhones couldnt be unlocked after 2.2.1.

The 2G phone can always be unlocked.
I'd say wait a week and load the official 3.0 software and then unlock it and sell it. It will be worth more money unlocked with 3.0 than with 2.2.1
The Dev team will release its magic software soon after the official 3.0 goes up online.

It will be the same version I think.
This GM version is probably already preinstalled to all 3G iphones and 3GS waiting to be shipped and sold on launch day.

What software do you use to unlock a 2G iphone with 3.0 update coming out this month? I also have an original iphone that am thinking of putting on ebay as jailbroken and getting a 3GS for myself.

Keep your eyes looking here (blog.iphone-dev.org), to see when the 3.0 unlock is released. It will be released as a Pwnage Tool and a Quickpwn version.

I'm curious -- why are people so sure that the dev team will release a software unlock so soon? 2.2.1 and the latest modem baseband still can't be unlocked, and that was released months ago -- right?

It's not the firmware, its the baseband (2.30.00) that can't be unlocked, which is a hardware thing. So you can't really blame the DevTeam for that. However, they already tried with 3.0 in one of the betas, and posted that they unlocked that as well. But as far as I know, they did mention problems getting a 2.28.00 BB to talk to 3.0, but I would just keep an eye out on their blog for anymore updates.

Are you referring to the iPhone 3G, as the iPhone 2G was unlocked for every single firmware update. The 3G one is the one people having trouble. The topic for this thread is for a iPhone 2G, I don't anticipate there will be a problem unlocking it.
