My G4/400/AGP just will not install OSX.
When I try to use the Panther disk I can't even get to the installer - I just get a grey screen...
I CAN install OS 10.1.3 but after it installs I can't get it to launch - I end up at a grey screen.
I've done a clean install...
I've checked RAM...I've done the firmware upgrade...
Well, using control/option/shift/delete has got me booted into 10.1.3 but I still can't get 10.3.3 to boot. Ack...
Any help out there?

Well, now I can't do anything...
Booting into Safe Mode (shift after opening sound) gives me a kernel panic. Holding down control/option/shift/delete gives me the same kernel panic.
Here are some details from the panic:
panic(cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac3,1".

Well you know what they say about black cats...
That bunch of coding up there looks pretty technical, so you might want to mosey on over to thetechpub (www.thetechpub.com/phpBB2/) and post about your installation woes (in detail -- computer, RAM, OS, cause/effect) over there for assistance if the advice you get here doesn't help you out.

Sorry, not an answer to your problem, but I also tried upgrading an office machine(G4 400/AGP) and I got the same thing. I actually had to give up and reinstall OS9 after a couple days of trying EVERYTHING. There was a thread of about 15 to 20 people trying to help me on macrumors, and nothing worked.

That should link to our discussion and everything we tried.
I hope you have better luck!
