View Full Version : Will Oleophobic iPhone 3GS Screen get damaged from a screen protector?

I've been lurking around, posting a few things about thoughts on cases & protectors as i'm trying to figure which one to get.
I have posted a thought on oleo screens in other threads but thought i would create its own thread to see if anyone with some knowledge about them, could chime in.

Since the 3GS has an Oleophobic screen, if we put a screen protector on it, i would think it would be ok. However, when you take it OFF.... will it damage the Oleo finish, almost peeling the finish off the glass in some manner? I am not familiar enough with that finish to know. Anyone know? I'd hate to pull my protector off, and see a damaged glass screen. :(

the good screen protectors are static cling on. There shouldn't be any problems at all.

I agree... they "Shouldnt" however, i'm just wondering if anyone knows for sure (inside scoop on reading the "Care for your screen" section of the 3GS documentation) so that i will have 100% faith in applying a good screen protector like the Power Support Anti Glare.
I'll just have to wait until someone gets an early view of the doc, or i get my 3GS and read the doc myself.

I appreciate the response. tks

I sent an email to PowerSupport USA (www.powersupportusa.com) and asked them if they knew about the new coating, and if there was any issue with thier protectors.

The response I got was that there was no issue using their screen protectors on the new 3G S.

I can post their email later from home if you want.

I picked up the Anti-Glare based on their response.

but why would you still need the protector with the new oleo screen:confused:

I have yet to see somebody's Iphone 3g screen got scratched up pretty badly. Mine is naked ever since launch day and still no scratch on my screen, I always put it on my pocket along with keys and coins that you might think will scratch it up but nada although on the back I do have scuff marks and few scratches. I've seen screens where it broke but because they drop the iphone, but I guess you could say that protector could help in lessening the damage on the screen in case you accidentally drop it. I just don't like the feeling of a 'condom' :D on my iphone :p

Wait so the screen is already anti glare? I picked up a pack of crystal power supports. I sure hope the screen doesnt have that grainy look.

I just went to the apple store to pick up a couple packs of the power support crystal film sets... one of the 'geniuses' told me it might not cling onto the 3gs screen..

i bought it anyway :D

no, its not anti-glare, its the same plastic\glass but with thin coating to reduce "oiliness".

I wouldn't dare risk it. My iPod touch 2G screen got scratched badly. I'm putting an InvisibleShield on my 3GS the second I get it. I'll activate later once the server is back up from the crash.

I asked at my local Apple Store today when I bought the 3GS. There were 2 'Geniuses' and said they never used screen protectors. Both showed me their phones and one of them still had the original iPhone, without a case or anything, and true to their word the screen is brand new.

I used the PS crystal film for my previous phones but I think I might have a bit more faith in the new screen coating this time around!

I got a huge scratch in my 2g screen and don't even know how it happened. It made the pixels discolored it was so deep. Luckily the phone had another problem and apple replaced it. Still don't have a screen protector and no major scratches yet but, I think I will get a screen protector for my 3gs

Get a screen protector. My 3GS is already scratched. :( I think the oleiphobic coating makes it easier to scratch.

from Power support to be honest I hated it I am back to Naked for now it got Sticky and covered in finger prints I thinking of ordering from SGP and getting the http://www.sgpstore.com/product_info.php/cPath/21_28/products_id/177 somebody here mentioned it and at $12 it's cheaper

thats what i was afraid of. Glass by itself is pretty damn hard to scratch=super durable 2g & 3g screen. IDK why apple would put a coating on the screen.. great idea....now you can't notice any fingerprints on my 3gs screen because its scratched to hell!

The funny thing is my original iPhone was the most "hardy" of the 3, I took scissors to it to demonstrate how scratchable it was and it didn't leave a mark! (The Apple geniuses demonstrated the same with their phones).

My 3G had some minor hairline scratches, and the 3GS, 3 days later... a deep prism-inducing scratch.

I guess they don't build 'em like they used to.

anyone tried putting crystal film on the 3GS ??

I just tried putting a crystal film cover on my iPhone 3GS. It does OK, but it does slide around a bit. Can be frustrating. I'm still looking for the best screen cover. Does anyone know if the a sticky cover like the bodyguardz of invisible shield will peel the coating off?

Slides around!?!? Did you separate the film from the backing before applying? I have the Crystal Film on my 3GS and it's impossible for it to slide around. You can't even get a corner to peel up without using tape to grip the corner. Something's up with your particular install.

+1

you also can't even tell it's installed unless you really look for it

I think you guys worry too much about something so minor. Put a screen protector on and call it a day.

I had one on my 3G all last year and it never moved - and looked great. I thought it would work as well on my 3GS but the screen on the 3GS is so slick, almost greasy - without being greasy - that it moves around when pushed. It is applied correctly, it just moves around slightly on the 3GS. It's not terribly easy to move around, but at the end of the day I have to adjust it's position because it's inevitably slid and is slightly hanging over the edge of the phone. It's useable, just annoying. I'm looking for another solution.

I can't understand this at all. Did you apply some kind of liquid to the screen or the screen protector before you installed it?

No liquid. Just pealed the crystal film off the plastic and let it fall into place (love that part). I thought I was good. I threw the phone in my pocked and left. When I pulled it out I thought I must had put it on very crooked. I fixed it and when it happened again I knew something was up. I'm glad that other people are not having these problems.

I think I'm going to try the other film - maybe that's the problem.

Like others have mentioned here, the static cling effect of the PS screen protectors is very strong. You either have a defective screen protector or you put it on wrong (assuming there wasn't any kind of grease on the screen either). Try the other one and I'm sure it will be much better. Then contact Apple and/or PowerSupport and explain the problem you had with the first screen protector - I'm sure they will send you a replacement.

the company says IS spray is safe, but its still an adhesive. im sure it is safe but id rather not take the chance. The static cling of the power support is fantastic, its not going anywhere, and it was way faster to apply and easier than IS. I used IS for the LIFE of my 3G, i went naked on 3GS then added the Power support crystal.

I love the crystal, its identical to naked screen, i'll venture out to say it finger prints less than the oleo screen, but you'll rub slightly harder to clean. i feel better with the film on.

My bone with the IS is two fold. I was a perfectionist putting it on, and the liquid freaked me out. you need to use a lot of it to get a good application. and two, after about 2/3 months of use the adhesive on the edges of the IS would start to get gunky, around the home button and the screen edges. IS is bullet proof, but im very happy with the crystal i added after reading the reviews here.

from SGP Store I love it find I get less finger prints then then the oleiphobic coating which is a coating so yes it can wear off  I highly doubt I will use any other screen protector I am do happy with the Steinheil and it was also very easy to put on! :D and no non stick issues for the most part antistatic! mild amount of adhesive used!

Well the oleophobic coating is molecularly bonded onto the glass, so i don't think a screen shield could harm it. I'm using a DLO Surface Shield on mine.

I'm trying to figure out why anyone would want to spray a liquid during the installation of a protector. This isn't like you have the surface area of a window film to deal with. If you apply it correctly there is zero chance for a bubble. Just apply the top or bottom edge and use a flexing/force motion to apply the remainder of the film onto the glass. Even pressure will force the film down and won't allow for any bubbles to develop. It's as easy as that.

application fluid it is required to install IS. I agree unless it's required, I don't see why either.

Yes, I'm using the Power Support Crystal Film that I picked up from the Apple store (~$20 CAD). Like I said above, I used one all last year on my 3G with no problems at all. It was amazing.

I tried re-applying the second Crystal Film and it works a lot better. I washed my iPhone screen with a mild soap solution (I know, probably not necessary but...), let it dry, used the dust tape that came with my crystal film to remove the dust and put on the Film with a soft cloth. The Film is now in place and doesn't move. I can get it to slide around my iPhone display if I push with both thumbs, but I've got to push pretty hard.

So, all is well for me. Thanks for the replies.

I absolutely agree with this. I had invisible shield on my front. After consulting genius bar, I stripped it off after having it on for two days because I had 2g phone naked for two years and never scratched it. When I took off invisible shield, it seemed to me some of the dry smootheness of the oleophobic screen went away and it seemed to pick up smudges easier. Anyway 3 weeks later I got a small, less than 1mm hairline scratch in my 3GS screen. I take care of my stuff too so I know the oleophobic screen is less durable than the 2g or 3g screens. Either that, or mine is defective which is why the hairline scratch.

I have the anti glare on my phone now to prevent future scratches. I still have invisible shield on back. I would stay away from inv. Shield on front because the kiosk guys that install it for you do two things that are probably the worst thing you can do to an iPhone: spray mist directly onto the phone putting it at risk for water damage, and put it under a blow dryer for almost half an hour to speed up the drying process.

The anti glare sticks via static cling so I think it's safe. If you go invis. shield, I would recco. you install it yourself although I hear it's a pain to do.

I applied water to my PS crystal film when installing on my 3Gs because i kept messing up and lent would get between the protector and the screen. Once i got it perfect even with water it does not move at all. Same with my 3G.

I have the same problem as soon as i got my 3GS i put a zagg invisible sheild on it and it would reposition it was a perfect install. I also had a perfect install on my old iPhone 3G id did not slide around at all.
