I have an eBay auction running, but the item i was going to sell
broke and i have to end the auction.

Is it possible to end an auction early and not sell the item ?

Yes, it is. But, I think you still have to pay the listing fees.

Yes, just say it broke, and yes you will have to pay for the listing fees!
