View Full Version : Fan going crazy when watching youtubes.

I've noticed over the last few months of owning my macbook. When ever I watch youtube, my fans go crazy, its unbearable. Having to get my headphones out to cancel out the noise. Its in a well ventilated area.
youtube virus?

It's because its a flash video. Nothing to worry about.

Yeah, flash has always been bad on Macs.

The noise and the heat it puts out is ridiculous making it a big let down, considering flash is highly used amongst web designers. and many web designers use mac's.:mad:

Never had a problem on my UMB.

Are you running the most recent version of Flash player?

I notice that it's usually the upper left corner of my MacBook. But yes, that's typical. I keep taking breaks while watching long flash videos because I'm afraid. lol. I know people will say "It's a computer! It's supposed to take that kind of us......" but I still think it's too hot.

I really do hope there is some sort of improvement for Flash incorporation/cooperation with OS X. Either from Adobe or Apple and sooner than later.

Thats because the computer is thinking... CPU starts working and heats up... its normal.

I've only had my Mac for 3 months and today it suddenly started making fan noises CONSTANTLY. It sounds like a movie projector. WTF? :confused:

I have never in the 6 months since I've owned my macbook experienced the fan noise like many here claim when viewing flash based video including youtube. This is the quietest notebook I've ever owned and my fan rarely kicks in at levels I can hear. I only have the lowly X3100 graphics chip as well.

One of the first applications I installed when I first bought this thing was VLC player.

If the fans don't kick in i'd start worrying about the fans being broken..First time through in HD: fan speed 3800rpm. Next 3 times fans never exceeded 5100rpm. I could definitely hear them but they never drowned out the audio and were barely noticeable. Keep in mind I've got the 2.4 C2D in my whitebook.

CPU remained a constant 99F

After watching that, my CPU temp went to 65C from 54C, fans went from 1999 to 2004rpm....:confused: I guess the glass table I use pulls heat away pretty well, but I dunno...

No way am I watching that POS more times :p

Yeah, I find there is no fan activity until temperatures reach 70 C+ without any fan control and the fans will stay around 2000rpm if it's below that.

Yup. I don't exactly monitor my fan speeds, but I've noticed 75C or so is the area where things ramp up.

I watched this in HD and according to iStat, my temp peaked at 71 degrees for a sec. Fan speed never rose above 2003 rpm.

I'd push it just a bit more. If it doesn't up it's speed at or over past 75 C, I'd start to worry about your fans.

Oh it definitely spins up when it heats up for example when doing a Secure Delete of the Trash Can.
