Getting a PB soon, want to network it to Windows box. I have a router and a hub laying around, BTW. Is there anything new I will have to buy? Software to convert file types for Windows? Any useful links?

Just about any file you have on the PC should work fine for the Mac assuming you have the associated application. Example. MS Word files will obviously need Word. Some WMV video files may require you to D/L Windows Media Player for Mac (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=windowsmedia)

Software wise http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/ is your friend when it comes to getting full compatibility to some of Windows more proprietary software. There are a number of software solutions on that site that are invaluable. In the case of you NEEDING some app that is on Windows you have the option of Virtual PC for Mac (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/virtualpc/virtualpc.aspx?pid=virtualpc) that will allow you to run Windows, albeit, slowly, on a Mac. (Note that there is currently NO G5 support for VPC. This will be coming sometime this fall.)

Hardware wise it sounds like you have all the hardware you need.

Heh. I don't even have a Mac yet and I've already started collecting software I'm going to install once I get one. I keep running into very cool tidbits of advice and end up thinking well I better download that now so I don't forget it. I think I have about 30-40 apps so far. Its not so much in preparation as an addiction.

If you are always getting a bunch of crap from others and need to open the files and/or convert them then MacLinkPlus isn't a bad app to have around. (Like the WordPerfect files PC users tend to send).

But if it's for yourself, you can pretty much just save stuff in a universal format.

Depending of which machine you buy you might end up with a Lite version of the App.
