Apple and AT&T have been making preparations for the launch of iPhone firmware 3.0. Here is a compilation of the changes and preparations that have been noted:
- The new MobileMe Find My iPhone (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/06/10/more-wwdc-tidbits-iphone-3g-s-oleophobic-screen-find-my-iphone-live/) feature has been live this past week.
- Push Notification (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=720247) support is beginning to appear in the App Store. Tap Tap Revenge [App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=305598228&mt=8)] specifically has been updated to provide push notifications.
- The iPhone 3G S Firmware 3.0 has already appeared (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=7813451&postcount=5) on Apple's servers. This firmware is specifically for the new iPhone 3G S (iPhone2,1) so is not recommended to be installed on older iPhones.
- AT&T has posted a FAQ (PDF) (http://www.att.com/Common/merger/files/pdf/iPhone/Customers_FAQs.pdf) about the iPhone 3G S and comments on MMS and tethering:Later this summer, as part of the 3.0 software, AT&T will make multimedia messaging (MMS) available at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle. And, in the future, AT&T will offer tethering capability for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.
- The iPhone 3.0 re-download charging message has been removed and was a bug (http://appadvice.com/appnn/2009/06/iphone-os-30-re-download-message-a-bug-says-apple/) according to AppAdvice. Re-downloading apps in 3.0 should be the same as the current firmware ( which means free).
- A couple of YouTube videos have appeared walking through the features of the new iPhone 3.0 operating system. Video 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WR3ze8G8n94), Video 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1uYVTk-_WE).
The iPhone 3.0 firmware is officially launching on June 17th (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/06/08/iphone-os-3-0-launching-june-17th/).

I received a text message from O2 a few days ago stating that iPhone 3.0 would be available on the 17th. I guess that's their way of preparing for the launch!

A page in MobileMe's help says: "After you delete all the information on your device, you won’t able to use Find My iPhone to locate your device on a map or send it a message."
That's common sense really, as you have to enable something on the phone to be able to find it. However, it's a warning that once you remote wipe your iPhone is essentially gone. Be very careful before you wipe it. Be sure you can't get it back.

Will this no extra charge be only for iPhone specific text plans or will it also include family text plans at no extra charge?

Not quite right... You can restore the iPhone, if you find it again, from the last backup you did.
From:http://www.apple.com/uk/mobileme/whats-new/
If you eventually find your iPhone, you can restore your email, contacts and calendars by enabling your MobileMe account on your iPhone. Or connect your iPhone to your computer and use iTunes to restore the data from your most recent iPhone backup.

3.0 has been running smoothly on my 3G. Search is a great app launcher, cut-copy-paste is well implemented and very slick, and landscape keyboard in Mail & MMS makes typing much easier and speedier. Voice recorder records high quality sound, which is easy to trim, conveniently within the app, and the enhanced stock app offers great tools for comparing events. The extra app panel (page) accomodating 16 additional apps is also a welcome feature.

So wait, the 3G-S and 3G are not going to be using the same firmware? So, for those of us with an iPhone3G, we cannot download OS 3.0 ?

The original iPhone and the iPhone 3G both use OS 2.x right now, and only the 3G has GPS. If you don't have a faster "modem" on your phone, then that feature simply cannot work. But the OS is the same. Also, the OS recognizes which device you have and adapts the OS settings to your device - the OS would is the same on all phones.

It most likely will not install, but the article says they recommend you don't install the 3GS version on the 3G, which suggests you can but it might ******* things up.

With John Cormack saying that a 2 times speedup for games is possible on older PowerVR MBX based iPhones and iPod Touches if Apple focused on optimizing the OpenGL stack, has anyone looked at whether iPhone 3.0 brings any OpenGL improvements? It'd be great if someone could compared the fps of current games on a non-iPhone 3G S on iPhone OS 2.2 and iPhone OS 3.0 to see if there is any difference. I don't suppose there is an easy way to measure fps?

If you really want video recording, the best option for older iPhones (original and 3g), you might was well jailbrake and install those types of apps.

There are three different versions of 3.0 -- one for each hardware.
Also, the OS recognizes which device you have and adapts the OS settings to your device - the OS would is the same on all phones.
You sure about that? Doesn't iTunes download the correct version of firmware for your iPhone? There's always been separate versions of the same OS for the different models. IIRC.

I can wait until the 17th to have the legt 3.0...
Right now I am happy because last year I subscribed for a 12 months contract to have my iPhone 3G (I previously had the iPhone 1 and sold it so I didn't spend too much). My carrier just confirmed that, on July, I will be able to unlock my iPhone because my contract has expired. I will then be able to sell it and purchase the 3GS for a decent price with a 12 months contract. So I can stay up to date with the new device ;-)
I plan to sell it for about 140 USD (considering that mine is now cheaper for sale new). But, being able to sell it to anyone with any carrier I believe I'll be able to sell it at that price (complete package, charger and everything, in very good shape).
What I am looking for in two days is 3.0 but also TomTom (btw, does anybody know what the price of tomtom will be??)

Have it on my 3G, and it's working smoothly. I guess I'm going to download the proper version when it's out, just to see if it is less buggy!
The 3.0 is a bit buggy, apple's own apps are quitting the wrong way for instance. Any one else noticing this?

I totally agree. There's a number of small bugs with 3.0 GM (which is probably the 3.0 final version to be revealed 17th june)
- Bluetooth A2DP profile seems to work (except for playback control which only supports play/pause at the moment) but is a bit buggy like sometimes it won't let you turn Bluetooth off until reboot or some small slow downs of a sound while say watching youtube videos
- Some problems with animation smoothness are quite obvious - you are going to see not smoth animation all across the OS
- Some problems with fonts in Notes application are also present (not always)
- Some overall slowdowns happen from time to time to the OS
But anyway - many and many of new features work great - copy & paste, Safari (really seems snappier this time :) ), exchange support, spotlight search and so on. I can definately tell that 3.0 update gives the feeling of a new phone with tones small changes and features. It makes me hold the phone in hands like if I just bought it :)

Had 3.0 GM on my iPhone 3G since Friday, MMS via Optus seems to work, the OS is still buggy, slowdown, unresponsive buttons, wierd freezes (Safari, had to force restart) and weird crashes (3rd party apps - Darkroom for example), transition into search screen isn't all that smooth.
I also tested Find my iPhone, it sort of works in Sydney, the message I tested took almost an hour to get to the phone, when I tried to find it on the map, it showed up the last place I lived - from 3 months ago! How could that be? It did eventually work but Mobile Me seems not very acurate in that it says the phone is "Offline" when it's next to me and not turned off, strange! Also while it said "offline" (the light under the phone becomes greyed out, same as MacRumors' forum lights) then you can't make it look for the phone, I wonder WHEN does it become "offline"? And say if the thief switches the phone off, will it be offline or what? need more clarification.
I hope later this week when they release the final version will have all these issues resolved. Also be aware to activate Find My iPhone you HAVE to activate Mobile Me's email account and turn Push Notification on you iPhone, for me that has a large data plan it's okay, but if you only have a puny 500MB plan then I'd becareful if you don't wish to go over and having another email account on my phone (I have 3 already) can be a bit of pain, back and forth, know what I mean?

- The iPhone 3.0 re-download charging message has been removed and was a bug (http://appadvice.com/appnn/2009/06/iphone-os-30-re-download-message-a-bug-says-apple/) according to AppAdvice. Re-downloading apps in 3.0 should be the same as the current firmware ( which means free).
Actually, once you sign out, then sign in with another account, the recharge for apps thing comes back. The only way as far as I know to get it free again, is to restore the iDevice.

ATT continues to be the weak link here in the US. Why do we have to wait for services that they've had months to get ready. Why no tethering now and ATT only comes forth when 21 other providers offer the service. Imagine having the iPhone without ATT!

From:http://www.apple.com/uk/mobileme/whats-new/
I know, that's why I said wipe it only if you're sure you're never going to find it again. If it's lost and MobileMe can't find it because, say, the battery's dead, when someone finds it and charges it if you've wiped it MobileMe cannot find it.

The find my iphone showed a green light on the Mobileme webpage. It did not find the phone but a short message was sent and received on the iPhone in about two minutes. An email confirmation did show up in mail as well.
I see nothing in the setting though about notifications for push unlike the picture on page one here. Okay, I read up on the settings.
You have to go into mail, contacts, calendars in Settings and go into Mobileme and turn the find my iphone option to on. Then you also need to go back and go into Fetch New Data and turn on Push.
It works. It pulled up a Goggle Map in about a minute in my area and then narrowed down the location a bit more showing the approximate location. It then gives a time stamp.
Not too shabby.
So don't know about that.

I don't think Street View (and the other Maps features that were in iPhone OS 2.2 for the iPhone) was announced, unless it was during the FAQ and I missed it, but it has been there since Beta 1. You will also get walking and mass transit directions on your iPod touch.
I just tested Find My iPhone. Unlike the person above me it works fine for me. Took just a second to find my approximate location (not shown as I don't want a public forum to see my location) and about 30 seconds to find a closer location. It took less than 1 second each to send 2 messages. One without a sound and one with. The sound is said to go off for 2 minutes, but if you unlock your iPhone and press the OK button on the alert that pops up, you can turn it off earlier. Also Apple sends you an email for every message you send. Unfortunately, if you leave the ringer volume low, it will play at the ringer volume. I was hoping it would always play at max volume.
I have my iPod touch with Find my iPhone on, and according to an FAQ, your iPod touch must be connected to Wi-Fi (for obvious reasons), but it also must be not asleep. My guess is this is because Wi-Fi turns off on the iPod touch on sleep to save battery.
By the way, has anyone found any apps other than Tap Tap and the AIM beta that use push yet?

Can someone explain what the MMS deal is going to be? If I am getting the new iPhone and have the $5 text messaging package for 200 text messages, will the MMS count as text messages or will they be $0.30 like they are now for my sony ericsson w810i?
I think you've just answered your own question, I think it's the same with all carriers world wide, unless they specifically say incl. M(ultimedia)MS, then you can bet on your mother's grave they will bend you over as it's not "Text" message, and that's exactly why people were defending Apple on not having MMS for a long time since email was (sort) of free while MMS will cost you much more for much less.

With John Cormack saying that a 2 times speedup for games is possible on older PowerVR MBX based iPhones and iPod Touches if Apple focused on optimizing the OpenGL stack, has anyone looked at whether iPhone 3.0 brings any OpenGL improvements? Apple implemented improvements to many layers in the iPhone OS that will benefit prior generation iPhones. I have no idea of how much those could help game performance however...

<<This firmware is specifically for the new iPhone 3G S (iPhone2,1) so is not recommended to be installed on older iPhones.>>
So does this imply that you shouldn't put 3.0 on the 2G? I was planning on leaving my 2G firmware as is on my 8 gig 2G anyway--it will be fun to compare the new features on the new phone to the old version--but I can't help but think 3.0 might be a little sluggish on a 4gig 2G?

A page in MobileMe's help says: "After you delete all the information on your device, you won’t able to use Find My iPhone to locate your device on a map or send it a message."
That's common sense really, as you have to enable something on the phone to be able to find it. However, it's a warning that once you remote wipe your iPhone is essentially gone. Be very careful before you wipe it. Be sure you can't get it back.
Just tested this on my iPhone 3G running 3.0 GM. (It didn't have anything on it.)
I am still able to locate the device, just plugged it back in to iTunes and reactivated it. I have a SIM PIN, and a bug with 3.0 is that when it asks me to enter the SIM PIN, it appears to be in a language might be something like Ukrainian or the like.

So does this imply that you shouldn't put 3.0 on the 2G? No. Apple is making the 3.0 OS available for all iPhone models and iPod Touch models (later for a minor upgrade fee) that they have manufactured to date.
The new iPhone 3GS uses a different processor core and chipset then prior generation devices and as a result you shouldn't install the 3GS specific image of 3.0 OS X on the older devices since it may not contain all that the older devices needs.

With the Find My iPhone/Wipe feature, they should have put in an option to lock the phone with a passcode remotely. Just set the passcode on the phone, then if it gets lost, lock it and send a message/find it. I know lots of people don't use the lock feature for convenience.

Later this summer, as part of the 3.0 software, AT&T will make multimedia messaging (MMS) available at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle. And, in the future, AT&T will offer tethering capability for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.
... so for original iPhone owners who still pay $20 which includes 200 text with no extra text package are we going to get bent over and have to pay for each MMS?

Anyone else had similar experience?
This is the final version. It's the Gold Master, which means this is the candidate that will be released on Wednesday. I've been using the 3.0 since Day 1 and it's A LOT more stable. Apps didn't work, apps would crash, there were GUI inconsistencies, etc. Plus, expect a lot of 3rd party apps to release updates to their apps, making them 3.0 compatible.
I'd honestly recommend possibly restoring on Wednesday (or now, don't matter) and not restoring from backup. That should probably fix a lot of your issues. If it doesn't you may want to take your iPhone to a local Apple store.

Oh, I was on Wi-Fi when I checked it before. I just tested it on 3G and it's practically as fast. Maybe Apple hasn't optimized it for the carriers in Australia yet? I bet it's actually harder for Apple with more carriers as they have to optimize it for different settings

It is a greyish (or possibly black, I haven't seen it since beta 1) square until you take your first photo. An animation puts the photo you took into that square. Your last photo will always be in there

ATT better be preparing, with no MMS and tethering support from the shoot it's like they learned about the 3G S at the WWDC like we did. I wish that they're blatant slacking off would be considered a contract violation so Apple could drop them and move on to carriers that get stuff done. And don't charge you an arm and a leg for everything (just an arm will do)
At first people complained about the initial price point of the iPhone, but at the rate ATT goes, it'll cost more than that every month just to use it. Granted, this is a use it all day setup:
Unlimited Minutes: $99
Unlimited Date $30
Unlimited Texting $20
Tethering $39 (just a guess)
= $180/month. Are you kidding me? The tethering is a wild guess, but I wouldn't hold it past them. They treat data like it's an endangered resource.

It would have nothing to do with the radio actually. The only reason I could see it not doing MMS is if Apple did not want it to since it can only handle EDGE speeds and if their implementation uses better quality photos then it would be extremely slow on an original iPhone. Although Apple's implementation may be similar to emailing a photo, the app scales down the pic automagically. :)

MMS will be 3G and 3G S only, and carrier dependent. I believe Stereo Bluetooth will not work on a 1st gen iPhone and will defiantly not work on a 1st gen iPod touch because that doesn't have bluetooth.

Are they saying that the 3.0 will not install on any old phone period? (meaning we're stuck without the OS upgrade) Or are there 2 different versions of 3.0? (one for 3GS and one for the others phones)
Thanks in advance
No, don't worry!
The iPhone OS 3.0 is software. It will work on all older iPhones, including first generation ones.
However, the 3 GS-- in addition to running the 3.0 OS software-- also has a different firmware. This will include support for 3.5G internet, and other hardware features.
The only file currently available is the restore pack for the 3GS, which includes iPhone OS 3.0 plus the 3GS firmware. This particular file will probably give older iPhones trouble.
Starting on Wednesday, the 3.0 software will be available to download for all iPhones.

Something's not clear to me:
AT&T says they'll offer MMS "at no extra cost to customers with a text messaging bundle."
I don't have a text messaging bundle. (I don't use nearly enough SMS to be worth $5 a month.) So will I pay 20 cents each MMS--"no extra cost" compared to the 20 cents I now pay for SMS?
Or will I pay extra for each SMS--30 cents or something? It sounds like AT&T charges 30 cents for other phones, in which case I expect the iPhone will be in the same category.
And I'll stick to free email :) EXCEPT for sending my GPS location. That's very useful--but at 30 cents (or even 20) a bit less so :o
Quick question for those who have updated-- does the update wipe your phone, requiring you to re-sync all the data?

I don't know--probably not a full wipe I'd guess--but I'd STILL hold off. It's a big update, and a bigger change than your phone goes through normally. You never know what MIGHT happen, so I'd play it safe.
I plan to back up my phone as usual before the update, AND copy the pre-3.0 the backup someplace for safekeeping. It's in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup, FYI. (Otherwise the next 3.0 backup will overwrite it and I'll have no fallback if some important app gets messed up by 3.0. Or if the backup itself does.)

But MMS is extra beyond the $30 data plan? WTF--it's insulting enough that we get charged extra for texting beyond data, but now also for MMS as well?
If AT&T is your providor, MMS cost is tied to your text plan. Here is a link to FAQ's on AT&T site. It's on page two.

What did you expect?
Anyway I've had 3.0 since last week and it's frustrated me incredibly. At random times 20% of the left side of my screen will not respond to touch. Meaning I had to change my passwords for apps I could not log into with a landscape keyboard because I could type a "1". (I realized after I can copy and paste a 1 in). I'll be restoring with the firmware apple officially releases and if that doesn't work I'll take my phone in for a replacement. This is bull!
that is what i get lol. oh well. good thing i backuped my iphone 3g over the weekend. lol... My work computer ain't seeing my iphone damn a whole day without my iphone sheesh..

I believe not. They may have built it specifically for the capabilities of the new CPU? It's listed in the 3GS pages, but not in the OS 3.0 pages.
(There are some limited voice dialer apps for 3G though.)

For those asking how much MMS will be, O2 have said the following...
"You can use your text bundle to send picture messages in the UK and abroad. One picture message equals four normal texts, or if you've got no bundle texts left, they cost 24.47p a message (21.28p excluding VAT)."

Quick question for those who have updated-- does the update wipe your phone, requiring you to re-sync all the data?
The only computer I have access to right now isn't my "sync" computer with all my music, apps, etc... If that data will go away I'm going to hold off on installing as I can't recover it at this moment.
Thanks!

So wait, the 3G-S and 3G are not going to be using the same firmware? So, for those of us with an iPhone3G, we cannot download OS 3.0 ?
And AT&T has posted that tethering will be available "later this summer" ?
you're just getting confused. there are five different "versions" of 3.0. a different one for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, original iPhone, iPod Touch 2G, and iPod Touch 1G. what it's saying is that you can't install the iPhone 3GS version of 3.0 on the iPhone 3G, you have to install the iPhone 3G version of 3.0. both the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 3G will get tethering and MSS later this summer

Find my iPhone isn't working for me.
Am running the iPhone 3.0 GM on a 3G. Restored my 3G to the GM perfectly, runs great.
I do have a Mobile Me account. I did restore my info from a backup, not sure if that's the issue...
...but when I log in to my MobileMe account online (Find My iPhone is turned ON on my 3G, just checked), I'm told "No devices registered."
Huh?
I do have Location Services on, full 5 bars of AT&T 3G where I'm sitting...have tried at home and at work, and I can't find a screen where I can actually register my device with MM.
Maybe because I'm not a "developer" I can't register my 3G until the "official" release day of June 17th?
Anyone?

Out of curiosity how many members have jailbroken iphones?
I myself have one , because of applications like Cycorder/qik to name a few good ones that I use on a regular basis. I guess the real question is , if you have a jailbroken iphone are you going to wait until there is a jailbreak for 3.0 software?
I personally am going to wait, because I do love using the features of cycorder/qik and pdanet (which allows tethering with the iphone)
I also already have the software to use landscape keyboard/copy,paste/bluetooth file transfer (not ad2p)
all via Cydia
I guess I really want to know who has a jailbroken iphone that is going to wait or is going to upgrade

With the Find My iPhone/Wipe feature, they should have put in an option to lock the phone with a passcode remotely. Just set the passcode on the phone, then if it gets lost, lock it and send a message/find it. I know lots of people don't use the lock feature for convenience.
Blaming somebody else because you find security features to be "inconvenient" is not really solving much.

Okies, not sure now... LOL Just wanted to make sure that you had that switch on, it's a bit confusing how to turn on "Find my iPhone." I hope that Apple streamlines that in the future.
I think your original assumption is probably correct that it was turned on briefly for devs, but now that there are a lot of non-devs using iPhone 3.0, Apple probably shut that service down. Maybe. In any case, you won't have to wait long to find out, so I wouldn't worry about it right now (unless you're plannin' on losing your iPhone anytime soon!) :p

The 200 SMS / MMS text package with AT&T is $ 5.00 per month. You can get 1500 for $15.00, and unlimited for $20.00. At least thats what AT&T's site says. If you don't have a bundle, you pay per message (rates on ATT.com).

I want to pull the trigger and upgrade my 2G to a 3GS but one thing is stopping me...Those pesky rumors of a reduced data plan with a possibly lower data cap. I wish they would come out and flat out deny that because once you sign your 2 year contract to get the phone you pretty much would be screwed in trying to get the lower priced plan right? Also they better not include some incentive for signing a contract and adding tethering when they come up with those price points.

Honestly the unlimited data plan is not that expensive, especially considering the competition. I think tethering will be in a price scheme similar to text messages - separate from the data plan. I wouldn't worry about it - incentives will only show up once AT&T loses exclusivity, which won't happen for a couple of years.

I set up CalDAV syncing w/ Google Calendar, for like 7 different calendars (only not excruciating because of copy and paste, heheh!)
And, well -- it works!
It's only unidirectional -- it only pulls calendars from the server, you cannot edit events or create new ones on the phone, and push those updates to Google. :-(
However, it's a start! Not sure if I'll use this, or the web-based front end that Google's been providing for a while. Hmmm.
Copy and paste does work very well though. :-D
---
EDIT:
OK, so I decided to look at the iPhone-optimized web front end, which I haven't really looked at for months. This is the one via www.google.com and signing in, not calendar.google.com. Anyway, it's way better than I thought, and you can edit events to your heart's content. So much for the iPhone-native calendar app. Apple provides! :-P

I set up CalDAV syncing w/ Google Calendar, for like 7 different calendars (only not excruciating because of copy and paste, heheh!)
And, well -- it works!

You can set up a push account with m.google.com in order to get full calendar support with push.

Video Recording is only on the 3GS as it has a camera to support it
Jailbreak and you can add that feature

All I want is the ability to send email from a MobileMe alias on my iPhone. I can do it from Mail -- why can't I do it from the iPhone? According to Apple support, this will not be a feature in 3.0 - I'm bummed.

Support for my subscription calendars in iCal would be nice as well (I think that this is being addressed?)

You mean two-way? Or just server push to iPhone?

EDIT: Never mind, I looked, but I really only want to sync calendars, not contacts... it appears this prevents you from using OS X's Address Book as your contacts app?

This is crap. OS 3.0 has been delayed an extra day in Australia  It is now being released June 18th.:mad::mad::mad: argh!
According to Apple Australia's website.
I hope this is a typo!!!
Hey, math time!
Apple: homed in Cupertino, California. They use Pacific Standard Time.
9 am PST on Wednesday, June 17 is what time in Western Australia?
2 am -- June 18th.
You must be new to the area.

Copy and paste does work very well though. :-D
How does the clipboard work? If you copy something and click the top button on your phone (sleep), will the copy remain on the clipboard. If I copy "I love porn" and click my phone on sleep and someone else picks up my phone and clicks "paste," will the text still be there? Also, once you paste something does it take it off of the clipboard, or can you paste it ten times and it stays until you reboot? (like a computer)
Thank you in advance for your response. :)

When they released the iPhone3G and the 2.0 Firmware, you guys got it first. I remember because I didn't sleep that night. I was on MacRumors, and you guys got it first, then each time zone got it, and then we got it here in America. iTunes released it to different time zones, BUT I remember that some people were reporting that they changed the time/clock on their computers and it fooled iTunes and let them download it. I didn't do that so I don't know if it really worked, but I remember a bunch of people said they did it.

Yes but last time the iPhone was released in 25 countries that spanned the globe. This time it's a more focussed release and as such they don't need to do a staggered roll out. It'll pop out of Cupertino in one fell swoop.

Yes, copied items are preserved via sleep. Not sure about power down, but I had some stuff copied before I went to bed, iPhone was in sleep all night, and yes, it's still here in the morning. And yes, you can paste as many times as you want. :-)
So be careful of the naughty stuff you copy! Hey, you said it! ;-)

What advice do previous first day buyers have?
I was told at my local Apple store that they open at 8 but I should probably be there around 6 am to get in the front of the line.
I've never been one to wait in lines. I'm going to give in this time since I've waited this long to leave Tmobile and get an iphone.
Also, anyone know what info I need to transfer my # from tmobile to Att?

Well, I made the switch from Verizon last year for the 3G iPhone. I arrived at the mall at 8:30am and was number 235 in line. I spend 7 hours and some change standing in line (some people were kind enough to lend me a lawn chair.. haha) so be prepared to stand and wait for a while if you arrive late. If you arrive at 6am I doubt you will have to wait long. The people at the apple store switched the numbers with no problem and told me that I may have to wait an hour or so before being able to use it, but this wasn't the case. I was on the phone talking before I was even out of the mall. Just make sure to bring a credit card, because you MUST have one (or a prepaid visa card.. which is what I used. I hate credit cards) to sign up for AT&T.
Let me know how you like it!

Second thing.. Got OS 3.0 from pb and I love it. The vertical keyboard while texting is a godsend. :D Installed perfectly and had no problems

I'd start at 5 to be on the safe side. Just sit in the car if there isnt a queue and just join the masses of people as they flood in. =)
To port your number from T-mobile to ATT, you will need a PAC (port authorisation code) which you need to ask T-Mobile for. It last's for 30 days so you'll be fine.

Amazed at people who are playing to queue to get the new phone. Especially if you have a 3G phone already. I suppose what ever rocks you boat.
I am looking forward to 3.0. Finally cut n paste and proper search.
BTW if you are porting in from another carrier go to an AT&T store not an Apple Store. A few days before my contract expired with Sprint I asked in the Apple store which is better as I wanted to port over two lines. The person said go to the AT&T store. I did on a Saturday morning and was in and out in 15 mins.

I guess the process is a little different then last year..
I was next to a couple people who were switching from Verizon and all we had to do is give them our number and they ported it over for us (at the apple store).

imcquill, thanks for this. Works perfectly.
One downside is that, at least in Microsoft Outlook, the "From" address displays as:
First Last [name@gmail.com] on behalf of First Last [name.me.com]
Even so, this is a lot better than my silly root MobileMe email address being sent to professional contacts. Not a deal breaker.

Glad you mentioned the credit card! I actually don't have one. I just checked my Apple email about my next steps in picking up my iPhone. It clearly states credit or debit cards are accepted. Considering you mentioned it, I will call and verify with the Apple store tomorrow.
thanks to those with answers to my questions!

Yeah, that was the one thing I was worried about last year. One guy in line suggested that I go get a prepaid visa card with the activation fee ($50.00) because that's the only reason they need it. So I went and did that. Registered it to my address and it worked. You have to make sure you register it to your address, otherwise it won't work. Also, apple let's people buy gift cards for the amount of the phone as a loophole for not having a credit card. Hope this helps. Best of luck!

To those who have installed 3.0 already from a GoldMaster ispw:
Are you having issues with your, i guess, proximity sensor not always seeing that your face is right next to the phone and therefore hitting buttons like hold and keypad or end call?
I'll admit that I recently dropped my phone in the water but it was working perfectly under 2.2 and since the upgrade hasn't been so swell...

Yes, I've heard it displays it like that in Outlook. In Mail.app on the mac, it just displays the from address. Either case, that was good enough for me. I've been using the trick reliably for a year.
