View Full Version : Which 24" iMac; 2.66 or 2.8 (Both Refurb)

In the process of buying a new 24" iMac. I am a big fan of refurb items from apple. Which one of the two should I get and why?

One is 2.8 ghz and the other is the new 2009 2.66 ghz. The 2.8 has the ATi card and the new one has the Nvidia card. Sure the Hdd is double and so is the ram but I am leaning towards the older 2.8 ghz. Suggestions?

Definitely 2.8GHz. You can upgrade RAM by yourself for ~50$ from Crucial (http://crucial.com)

Yes but what about the fact that I can only put in a max of 4 gb ram? Is the speed bump noticable?

When Snowleopard comes out, it's going to use Open CL...will the 2.8 support it fine or would the 2.66 be better?

ATI 2600 isn't supported I think, but no-one knows how much OpenCL will speed up. There's only few apps that will support OpenCL so I wouldn't think about that. 9400M is also so low powered so OpenCL can't take big advantage of it.

SR iMacs can unofficially take 6GB but 4GB will be fine, unless you have to run multiple RAM intensive apps

well, right now it costs somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 bucks to upgrade the ram in the new imacs.....so, theres that...

Anyone else have any thoughts. I'm deciding between the two as well. Main thing I'll be doing on the imac is video editing with imovie and some gaming.

The benchmarks that I could find actually put the 2.8ghz ahead of the 2.66ghz

Definitely refurb 2.8 for gaming

I just sold my 2.8ghz 24" imac (4BG RAM) and have bought a 13" macbook pro which I'm going to hook up to a monitor- my MBP has 4GB DDR3 ram and a 2.26 processor. It feels a lot faster and snappier when opening applications and doing every day tasks on it, so I'd recommend the 2.66 as the ddr3 ram seems faster
