Apple today announced the details of its Mac OS X Snow Leopard Up-to-Date Program (http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/), which allows U.S. customers who purchased or will purchase a qualifying Mac after June 8th, 2009 with OS X Leopard installed to upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard upon its September release for a shipping and handling fee of $9.95 plus tax. Similar programs are available in a number of other countries. While Apple announced general information related to the program in its initial press release (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/06/08/mac-os-x-10-6-snow-leopard-shipping-in-september-29-for-leopard-users/) covering Snow Leopard's launch, today's update provides full details for customers looking to upgrade.
Apple has provided lists of new (http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/macosx-upgrade-qualifying-new-macs.html) and refurbished (http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/macosx-upgrade-qualifying-refurbished-systems.html) Mac that qualify under the program, which requires customers to submit their completed order forms within 90 days of purchase or by December 26th, 2009, whichever is earlier. Customers who have multiple qualifying Macs on a single invoice may purchase an upgrade kit for each system as a cost of $9.95 for each system or purchase a single upgrade kit for $9.95 and request additional "Right to Copy" licenses at no charge. Regardless of the method chosen, the total number of licensed upgrades may not exceed the number of qualifying systems on the invoice.
Apple is also offering a similar program for customers purchasing Xserves who wish to upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard Server. The Snow Leopard Server program also costs $9.95 plus tax for each upgrade kit, and an upgrade kit is required for each qualifying machine for which an upgrade is requested.

But it's $29.95 for everyone else, right? Because if that holds true, that's a heck of a bargain.

It's $29 for those who have Leopard. If you're running Tiger, you have to buy the Mac Box Set.

How will they know that I have Leopard on my system?
I mean if I install it over my current Leopard installation then it knows it. But what if I upgrade my MacBook with a newer hard drive which is blank. Do I first have to install Leopard? (which wouldn't really make any sense).
There wouldn't really be away to check if I bought my MacBook with Leopard (only if the look at my receipt I guess)

My bet (or wish) is they will offer an update-only DVD for $29.99 so you wont' be able to install the OS unless you have 10.5 already installed on your machine. In which case, they will also offer a full 10.6 DVD for $129.99...

Up-to-date discs have always been upgrade-only, because they're meant for people that have purchased a Mac very recently. They think that upgrade is all that is needed. They're wrong, of course...

No, I don't think so. Maybe the Install-DVD only works on those systems which were shipped with Leopard installed. That of course would be bad for those who upgraded their machines to Leopard...

The install will probably just want you to insert a Leopard Disk to prove you have it before it will do a clean install. It is easy to solve this way without making you install the OS to then do an upgrade.

think about the iLife '09 up-to-date program ($9.95 as well). it was a full install disk (you didn't have to have an older version installed).

I have Leopard (family pack) but I'm hoping it's an 'on your honor' system so we don't have to jump through needless hoops.
otherwise I'd hope they would just have you put your old Leopard DVD in for a second to verify.
Edit: second thought, they mey just be banking on the fact that if you meet the hardware requirements that there's a dang good chance it came with Leopard or that you bought it. (just to go along with the 'on-your-honor' method)

With iLife 09, the update cutoff was for purchases after March 8th. Even though I bought my Macbook 4 months before then (and even though I had Applecare with the purchase date registered), you could still enter your serial number and the day of the cut off and it worked.
Anyone have any luck with Snow Leopard? I bought my unibody Macbook December 08... I dont wanna sound cheap, I'll pay the $29 if it doesnt work... but hey, if it does...
I'm gonna try my serial number when I get home...

My guess would be that they will say it still cost to ship it there and have employees get it for you etc...
and they don't say it, but I bet the 9.95 is helping pay for the physical materials of the disc, box, etc. so they can atleast break even on that.

Perhaps someone here knows how this usually works
In my household there are 4 macs: 3 of them running leopard + 1 running tiger. All of them are running iLife+iWork '08... Once Snow Leopard comes out, I'd like to upgrade all of them at the lowest cost possible...
Is it possible that Apple releases a MacBoxSet / FamilyPack that contains the Snow Leopard + iLife 09 + iWork 09 upgrades for 5 computers in the household? (assuming they already run Leopard)
Or, would the Tiger upgrade MacBoxSet work in computers running leopard, in case they release a 5 license Family pack?
If not... how's this?
Snow Leopard is a new OS, right? so once I install Snow Leopard in any mac, the Leopard DVD copy I used to upgrade that mac is now free to use to upgrade any other mac using Tiger, or sell it on eBay... am I right?
Thanks for your thoughts...

I cleaned up my bedroom yesterday (I went through three garbage bags!) and I found ten dollars in change and two Apple gift cards, which I assumed to be worthless. Well, I checked them out on the Apple Store site and I had $25! So I grabbed an Up-to-Date disk. It was only after I checked out that I realized I wouldn't be getting it until September. :(

When I clicked on the link from the up-to-date page (on my new Mac) and signed into the apple store, it took me to an empty shopping cart as well. The strange thing was that when I tried the same link on my old Mac it was able to show me the up-to-date software in the shopping cart. What gives?
It's all good though because the link suggested above worked fine. I was able to add the software from my new Mac. Thanks for the tip!

Might be worth it to go in and ask. I know a lot of Apple resellers have permission to burn discs of OS X point updates for customers so it stands to reason that the Apple stores might be able to do the same with a major upgrade since it's technically free.

Hi,
I bought an iMac when Apple introduced Leopard. The iMac had Tiger pre-installed and a Leopard disc was in the box. My Leopard disc will NOT install unless I have Tiger already installed on my hdd. I found this out when replacing a hard drive with a blank drive. I had to install Tiger onto the hdd before my Leopard disc would allow me to erase and install.
It took a while.

The development costs of SL were heavily subsidized by FreeCreditReport.com, GoDaddy.com, and several Cayman Islands based Viagra and Cialis retailers, in exchange for heavy banner ads, interstitials, and other product placement in SL. The catch is that Apple really needs to sell SL for them to pay the full amount pledged.

We're spoiled. Really.
First we thought $129 was a fair price.
Then we were jubilant about $29. But that wasn't enough.
Now some of us are trying to find a way out of paying $10 and getting it for FREE.
Nothing wrong with the above, it's just interesting to consider.
$29 is nothing for Snow Leopard. Especially considering that a lot of quality applications for OS X retail for that much (and that's just for a single app, not an OS.)
Whether MS offers Windows 7 at some point early on for free makes no difference. I wouldn't take it even for free, and there are plenty of us who feel the same way. I pay more or extra to not have to use Windows and to not be exposed to that kind of ill-conceieved and ill-designed environment.

There are a few different links listed on Apple's page -- including a separate section for Macs bought from resellers or from a retail Apple Store -- so make sure you're following the right one. Assuming you're in the U.S., you want this link:

Sorry - I think these might be the old Xeons with the 2GB, the new ones look like 6GB
Again - I am not sure - does anyone know? I am waiting for the inevitable quiet speed bump that always happens right around now.
Thought the top would be 3.2 with middle 2.9 and low 2.6 as the configuration now makes no sense, especially with the memory constraints.

I bought my Mac in the US, but by the time September rolls around I'll be back in the UK. Anyone know if I can participate somehow, does the US scheme let you put a UK shipping address?

I remember Apple did the same upgrade program for Leopard. Did Apple send out the same disk of Leopard you get at retail or is it some special copy that will only work on specific hardware.
My MBP qualifies for the upgrade, but I would prefer to put Snow Leopard on my iMac as I'm fine with Leopard on my MBP.

I purchased a new 13" MacBook Pro last week after the WWDC so I definitely qualify, however, I don't even seem to be getting to a page that lets me enter qualifying information -- after clicking on the page for US customers, I get the log in screen and then get bumped to an empty shopping cart after logging in.
I tried doing the online chat thing thru Apple's website and the guy didn't even know about the Up-to-Date program and was totally unhelpful. He first suggested it was because Snow Leopard doesn't come out until Sept but when I pointed out that you only have 90 days from your purchase to qualify and everything on this page indicates that you can sign up now, he said he didn't know why it wasn't working and they aren't aware how Apple "chooses" who can participate in the program. What?
I ended up calling them but Customer Support wasn't open. The person in sales was equally clueless and unhelpful. I'm a little surprised that Apple employees don't seem to know about the program. Is that normal?

I get the same thing (the empty cart) and I purchased my MBP 17 on the 12th (received it yesterday). I'll wait until they fix it, there's no rush... it's typical Apple, really. The online "storefront" for the Apple Store is very neat, but everything in the back of the store (Order Status, tracking and various other features pertaining to your Apple ID account) is a complete mess. Nothing works properly and the pages look like they were designed by grade schoolers.

Oh, they're still selling it for $899 through some educational type deal for schools who want dirt cheap Macs. The economy, you know.
Edit: They're not "still selling it", but rather "selling it again".

That would be the best way I think.
Well, I bought my iMac (with Tiger installed). Later, I bought the Leopard DVD. I also bought a new Macbook (with Leopard installed) since then. Now, my iMac DVD drive doesn't want to read DVD-DL anymore...
Now, how could I use my legit Leopard DVD on my iMac to prove that I bought a retail copy?

Is it going to be a similar deal in the UK. I have two macs both on Leopard (In my sig). Will the uk have a similar $29 for the upgrade deal.
Will I have to buy that twice or pay once for both machines?

Unless you just bought 5 new Macs, you'll probably be purchasing/sharing a family pack upgrade with someone (assuming you're not pirating it).
Sure, the license says "household", but it also says the computer must be located in the house. That sucks if you own a MacBook and want to leave home with it. Apple's family pack EULA is about as enforceable as the original Safari for Windows license.

While my iMac was purchased with Tiger I did purchase the Leopard family-pack (although not from the Apple website ..) so I'm hoping I can qualify for the $29.99 upgrade path :) It will be interesting to see how it plays out in practice!

Won't you need an external DVD drive either way?
First to install it in the first place and then maybe to check if you've got Leopard?
It doesn't change anything or am I missing a point here?

I'm in the US, bought my MBP on the 16th, and also can't get anything to show up in the cart.
I spoke to a support rep in Live Chat and they said that it's a known issue that is being worked on, and to try back next week. Not very informative, and why do they still have it up if it's broken for many people?

I was told by an Apple store employee that rather then having to spend $9.95 shipping I will be able to just pick up the disk in store for free, and if I want I can drop off my MBP do some shopping in the mall and they will install it for me. I love Apple

A possible solution for everyone experiencing the 'empty basket' problem. After countless failed attempts to order the Snow Leopard Up-To-Date offer i finally succeeded with the following sequence:
1. Open Safari Preferences
2. Under 'Accept Cookies' make sure you select 'Always'
3. Exit preferences and QUIT Safari (It's important you fully quit Safari)
4. Re-open Safari and go to the UP-To-Date pages and qualify your order, your basket should update properly this time
5. Spend your $10/£7.95 on what is the bargain of the year!
6. Change your Safari Preferences back to your original settings
Worked for me straight away doing this after many failed attempts.

Has anyone heard anything about what kind of installer would the disk have? I believe the up-to-date 9.99 version will be upgrade install, but I'm very interested in whether the 29.99 version would be full install (capable of erase install).
I have not found this information anywhere.
IMO, it would suck if I wasn't able to do a clean install to a fresh hard drive.

Hey guys, I'm sorry if these questions has been asked before but, I'm wondering if... (I want to get the SL for $29.99 cause i have the Mid-'07 Macbook)
and I want to know, when we pay for the 29.99 is it like, I'm paying for the actual disk, or will they just install it for me.. and then that's it?
also is it only for one computer, when I pay for it?
thanks!

As long as your mid-2007 Macbook is running Leopard, then you can buy Snow Leopard for $29.99. You receive a disk and no, they won't do it for you I believe. :)
Yes, all software is for one computer unless it says Multi-License, Family Pack, etc. :)

I removed what I didn't want and checked out the upgrade fine.

if that happens try adding something to your cart then view your cart, that's how I got it to finally show in my cart, and I tried adding it so much that I had 5 copies in my cart. You can remove whatever you don't want of coarse.

I just figured this out (for Safari at least) After i would sign in with my apple Id I would get a empty cart. Basically all you need to do is sign in, get to the empty cart page, then go to the 'Develop' drop down in the menu bar (If it doesn's show up you have to go to safari preferences ->advanced check box for show develop in menu bar) and change your user agent to 'Mobile Safari 3.0 (iPhone)' page reloaded and voila there was the up to date snow leopard package. I figured this out by trying it first on my iPhone. Weird...

Anyone know if they will be sending SL discs out to ADC Select members?
geko29
Aug 21, 2009, 03:53 PM
It looks like the cost is just to cover physical production/shipping, as evidenced by the fact that they'll allow you to buy a single disc for $9.95 and install it on multiple covered systems. However, they're not 100% clear on it, so my question is this:
Will I legally be allowed to install the $29 upgrade disc I preordered for the iMac I bought in November, on the 2 MBPs and iMac I bought last week? That is, is the upgrade truly free (as it appears to be) and they only want money for actually getting it to my door?
I have no problem paying for the disc (and applying for the "right to copy" license) if necessary, but would rather spare the hassle if I can.

A co-worker was also having trouble adding SL to his cart. When he clicked the online link it sent him to a page asking for his purchase location and serial number and refused to add anything to the cart. I managed to come up with a work around though (I hope...). Unfortunately it requires that you know someone who qualifies for the program and is not having the issue.
1. Get your friend/co-worker/lover to log in and go to the uptodate page and have them add SL to the cart. This should work even if they've already completed the process once.
2. Click on checkout. It should ask you to authenticate yourself again. This time put your credentials in (not your more fortunate friend's).
3. Now you should be logged in to your account with SL in the cart for 9.95 or whatever.
4. Buy it. Rejoice.
