Is the app any good? I might consider it instead of a text plan. Or at least cut my text plan down to 200 a month.

Since nobody will take a minute to answer I figure I'll try.

I believe it's a $5.99 (one time price) app but it eliminates the need to pay AT&T's ridiculous text message fees. Previously, I believe you could only see new messages if you opened the application. Now, with push, you will see a number in a red bubble like you do on messages and mail, to let you know you have new messages.

Also, I believe you have to text a person first, they can't text you first. I think I read that they were going to be fixing that though. Hope that helps.

I don't think it used to have this, but I like that they give you a unique texting address. That makes me very happy.

about the unique address...can my friends now add my address to their phones and text me with that address?

I didn't know that you can use text to email.

Haha actually my girlfriend did.. cute I know lol. Yeah the push is great and it has a new sound I haven't heard on my mac or iphone before. Also when you unlock the phone it goes straight to the textfree app and into the conversation. So far so good!

finally but what if we want MMS? Then do we have to subscribe to AT&Ts text plan then:confused: Unless... somebody else create an app that offers free MMS also like this free text?

Yeah I did it on my phone. I saved the address on my phone and texted my iPod Touch. It seems to work great. I don't have 3.0 yet so I don't have push yet. But it has the unique address and landscape keyboard. Works great.

There is a picfree app for the iPhone. Hopefully it gets updated for 3.0 also.

Nope I dont think so. I'm VERY dissapointed that if you have sound enabled, but have your iPhone silenced, it doesnt vibrate! I wish it vibrated if you had sound ON and your phone silenced.

EDIT: Disregard that...I had vibrate OFF in my iPhone settings for silent mode.

I talked to a textfree rep and she told me they will have that in a future version, hopefully the next. the sound is quite annoying.

Oh that sucks. I have my phone silenced most of the time. Maybe they'll fix that in the next update? (I say hopefully)

Edit: Sorry, that was meant as a response to Eminemdrdre00's post.

I think it might be a iPhone 3.0 limitation. We might have to wait for Apple on this one :\

Quick question about Text free. When you send a text from the app, does it show your number when the person receives it, or is it like Aim where it is an Aim server number!?

the icon is ugly, but the app itself I think looks pretty nice, especially with the individual photo of each person I text.

After this update it sends under an email that you can pick. .......@textfree.us or something like that. People you text can then put that in their contacts under your name and it will say your name from then on when you text them.

Don't really like the application that much, probably because I have unlimited texting, but the push notifications are working great for it.

And whoever said vibration wasn't working for you in the app with silence on, it's working fine for me.

That was me! I'll have to try it again, weird...
Update: Its because I had "Silent Vibrate" OFF in the iPhone settings. Stupid me!

Quick question from whoever has the paid version, does it still say "-sent from Textfree" when you send a text?

Just text an email address to test it out.

Another question to those who paid for this app. I really think its worth the $5.99 with Push Notifications. But I already chose a username in the free app...will I be able to use the same name in the paid app?

Vega sent me a message from his full version of textfree to my iPhone. The push notification worked great. It didn't inclue anything like "sent from textfree" or anything of that sort.

Looks cool so far.

I think so. When you enter your name after opening the paid version for the first time, the app will fetch your information from their servers.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger. $6 for unlimited texts, with push notifications is definitely worth it. I wish the icon was prettier, but its not a deal breaker. I just hope this app doesnt just disappear like that other free text app "InfiniteSMS".

it's a weird server number.

This alone makes the app not worth it for me. I'm kind of disappointed I bought it.

When you text with someone who's using an iPhone but not TextFree, every single text starts a new conversation. When you text other phones, it comes from a server number instead of a recognizable, constant number, and always includes FRM: and MSG: fields, which are obnoxious.

Maybe make sure your iphone is logged onto your itunes account in the app or music store (just scroll to the bottom)

hadn't seen this until this evening, being able to text american friends free of charge is pretty good, and with the push notifications of replies is better, but when i installed the lite version there didnt seem to be an option to receive notifications. i opened the app as this seems to promt the app specific push section in settings to appear, but to no avail.

am i missing something?

So to clarify...

Lite version has no push/paid does, but both allow unlimited texts?

Also am I right that it basically sends as an email to avoid the text fee, does that mean whoever Im sending to needs to have email on their phone?

Lite has push :) It does limit you to 15 OUTGOING messages a day though. And messages go right to the recipients sms/mms inbox, not to email. Just like a regular text.

The problem is that, according to my friend, each textfree text that I send him starts a new thread in his Messages app rather than continuing in the same thread. Anyone know a way to fix this? Maybe if he adds the textfree e-mail to his contacts as suggested above? Or if I register my mobile number with textfree? Or maybe there's just no way around it.

I think if you do both of those things it should be fine.

I'm using the app now and it works great. The keyboard works great for me too. I have a keyboard on my phone, but the free texts are nice. I would absolutley recommend this app for anyone.

I'm tempted, but not all my friends are good at remembering stuff

They will basically have to remember which contact to text and which contact to call...am I right?

Hi,
I do not get any push notifications anymore. All my settings/notifications are set to alert me of new messages. It used to work, but since I upgraded to 3.1, push stopped working....I've tried deleting, re-installing, re-syncing, then deleting, nothing works. My itunes account is logged in, but I still can't figure it out. I'm from Canada and using the Rogers network. I find this app useless without push notifications
