Several readers are reporting that their potentially early iPhone 3G S shipments are being intentionally delayed by Apple until the official launch date of June 19th. While originally scheduled for delivery as early as Wednesday, June 17th, many individuals have noted the following message appear on their shipment tracking:The receiver requested a hold for a future delivery date. UPS will attempt delivery on date requestedApple has done similar things in the past to time shipments with official launch dates.

That's not so bad, at least you know it's shipped. Does anyone know if there will be additional phones on sale in stores (Apple and AT&T) on the 19th, or do the pre-orders suck up all that inventory and the stores won't get any until the pre-orders are filled? Trying to decide whether it's worth going down to a store or not.

This does suck on the surface but the early shipping+ hold does mean that the pre oders will arrive on tim e and not on the 20th or Monday the 22nd...

Totally fair. You should not be able to get it 2 days before everyone else. It's SMART of Apple to ship them early so there's no issues the day of the launch. Be happy they have it ready to roll.....sheesh, people rated this "negative". It's called smart planning....unlike last year's horrific launch.

I am getting that message now too. Obviously the "receivers" did not request this delay, it's just the mechanism that UPS has to delay a shipment. Disappointing, but not surprising I guess.

As of right now, the hold is no longer a problem.. THE HOLD HAS BEEN REMOVED... apparently it was a clearing of customs issue. click here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=720502&page=111) to view up to the minute updates on what's going on with the shipping roller coaster ride. Now we have confirmed reports of Arrival scans and back to the original delivery dates 1-2 days before launch on Friday

Here is my thought, they'll deliver the preorders will be delivered on the 18th.
Here is my reasoning for thinking this:
The current iPhone users who are updating their phones will be doing it tomorrow on the 17th.
The people who preordered will be activating their phones on the 18th.
Then everyone else will be activating theirs on Friday who buy in store.
It spreads it out over three days, instead of just one day like last years fiasco. Just a thought.
At least I'm hoping to get mine on Thursday. :D

from UPS website (excerpt):
"Industry's Only Web-Based, Automated Interception Service Makes It Easy for Shippers to Reroute Packages Before Delivery...
UPS Delivery Intercept, an automated service that gives customers ultimate flexibility and control by enabling shippers to intercept and reroute packages before they're delivered...
UPS Delivery Intercept is powered by a UPS innovation known as Package Flow Technology, which enables UPS not only to map more efficient routes for drivers but also to flag packages for special handling while they are in the UPS network. In fact, an interception can even be executed after a package is on board one of UPS's familiar brown delivery vehicles....
With UPS Delivery Intercept, shippers have a number of options once UPS intercepts a package, including:
* Return the package to the shipper.
* Redirect the package to a new address.
* Hold the package for delivery on a future date.
* Hold the package for pickup by the consignee."

Wait.. say I manage to pick up a 3GS from the Apple/O2 store here in the UK at say 9am GMT (shouldn't be a problem as there are two O2 stores and an Apple store about 30 seconds apart), that will mean I get it several hours before anyone in the US right? Just thinking aloud.. :p

Jun 17, 2009, 04:57 AM
Why do some have the arrival scan after the receiver request while others don't?
I think the receiver request goes in the system for wherever the package is at that time or will be if it is in the air. The arrival scan still needs to take place so UPS knows for sure that is where the package is and it is accounted for. The ones not showing the arrival scan probably have not been unloaded yet.

Keep in mind the delivery date on the Apple website when we pre-ordered was "Delivers *by* June 19th". Not "on" June 19th", but "by" June 19th. It's a small game of semantics, but it does have a different meaning.
After the disappointing announcements about both MMS and tethering being delayed by AT&T (and seeing that cryptic delivery promise from Apple) I fully expected Apple pre-orders to arrive early in order to:
1) Generate additional buzz for the product when some of them showed up early
2) Further distance Apple from AT&T in consumer's minds, so that the next time a big upgrade comes around people are driven to purchase through Apple channels.
3) Give a big "F U" to AT&T over the MMS and tethering issues (and their crappy network).

Just got off the phone w/UPS after pulling the 'ol "I'm the receiver and never requested a hold" routine.
The woman told me that UPS isn't "holding" the package but that the "exception" is simply a mechanism that goes into action when a shipment from China comes to the states and they need to allot some extra time to compensate for the customs process.
She then said I'd have my package by 10:30 Thursday morning.
Let us bow our heads in prayer.

The main ad giving buyers options for getting their paws on the new iPhone said delivered to your door "on" June 19. That is the only date on which anyone is entitled to rely. It's more than semantics. That was a precondition for the sale. By the 19th was a shipping notice.

Don't loose hope. They can still ship out of China toady and make it. Another option is that Apple has stock in their distribution network in the US (which I'm betting they do). If so, they can ship through Thursday afternoon for Friday delivery.

2) Further distance Apple from AT&T in consumer's minds, so that the next time a big upgrade comes around people are driven to purchase through Apple channels.
3) Give a big "F U" to AT&T over the MMS and tethering issues (and their crappy network).
Good luck with that. You'll get your phone on Friday

You beleive that crap. Customs is cleared at point of entry into the country not the delivery destination.
the hold is to meet Apples and ATT release date/request not customs.

My AT&T order shipped today too. I didn't pre-order until June 13, and they told me that mine would come in the 2nd wave (i.e. not on launch day). But the status just updated on my order page to Shipped, and I have a FedEx tracking number that shows it arriving in Louisville on June 18 by 3pm. I guess I'll get mine on launch day after all.

I'm going to wait out the initial rush, and then probably get mine at the at&t store since I need to add 2 lines to my account (1 for the 3Gs, 1 for my girlfriend's dad, non iPhone, she gets my 3G) anyway. I had one reserved at the Apple Store, then found out I had to help my girlfriend move at 8am on Friday, so I wouldn't have had time to get all that worked out. I'll live...

Two things.
1. Are you running symantec? Hehe.
2. Are people SERIOUSLY surprised by this? I mean, come on people. Those that thought they would get their phones early because of what UPS.com said are not very smart, some may slip though the cracks but a majority, if not all, will deliver Friday.

C'mon people, think! Did you really expect Apple would let thousands of us get the phone two days early?
It is COMMON practice in the shipping business for large bulk mailers to be able to specify a Do Not Deliver Before date or In Home Request Date. These allow mailers/shippers to submit items early (to make sure they don't arrive later than promised), but still still ensure no one gets before retail is delivery.
Remember the last Harry Potter Book? Amazon mailed them a few days early and they sat in Post Offices waiting for the Saturday delivery requested by the publisher to coincide with the retail store release.
Check out most of the junk flyers you get at home from the USPS, there's always some thing printed on them, like Postmaster, Deliver on Tuesday/Wednesday.
Get a grip, you'll get your phone Friday like the rest of us. Maybe a very few of you will get one that slips through, but don't hold your breath, and don't expect thousands of us to get them.

That only applies to people who walked in to an AT&T store and pre ordered there. Some people who pre ordered from Apple selected to pick it up from the Apple store.
For me, the iPhone will be delivered to my house because I don't feel like waiting in a line.

I ordered on Friday the 12th, a full day before they declared they were sold out. I did it over 1-800-my-apple. The very nice CSR assured and guaranteed I'd have it by the 19th. After the orders were placed, that's what the order status page said- june 19th.
Today I get the emails (I ordered two 3gs's so I used two apple ID's), saying "your phone has been shipped, will be delivered by june 23rd", and the same information is reflected on the order status page. The UPS tracking info shows delivery on june 22nd.

Card is defective, you will not be able to activate your iPhone 3G.
To resolve the issue, we are sending you a replacement SIM Card via

Once you receive your iPhone 3G and replacement SIM Card, remove

Call Apple and get a refund. They will credit you w/o question. I don't know why Apple doesn't make it crystal clear in instances like this that there is only one level of delivery service... the free one. This happens everytime they launch a product with a specific delivery date guaranteed. It's also true when an item ships from China since, obviously, there is no ground service across the Pacific.

That's not so bad, at least you know it's shipped. Does anyone know if there will be additional phones on sale in stores (Apple and AT&T) on the 19th, or do the pre-orders suck up all that inventory and the stores won't get any until the pre-orders are filled? Trying to decide whether it's worth going down to a store or not.
first off. on the delay. so what. at least you have the likelihood of getting it on the 19th, 20th at the latest, instead of them shipping from China on the 19th and you get it almost a week later.
second, to answer the pre-order question. I would hazard that the stock is about to ship and it will most certainly be based a great deal on the pre-orders. so pre-order it like now if you want to get one on Friday. that way even if it doesn't go into the shipping amount, you'll get one of the 'bump' rather than just risking it and ending up with nada

Just call up UPS and tell them that you didn't request the package to be held. It's happened to me before, and UPS blamed it on the fact that they thought it was a holiday. I mean Apple could be holding it, but if you get a good rep, they'll mark it to be delivered the next day.
Don't waste your time. This is a major shipping contract with penalties for noncompliance. No clerk or rep can/will override that.

Hey look, you have plenty of people in Jersey are buying iPhones instead of medical waste resistant bathing suits and asthma inhalers so maybe you should go back to trimming your pits rather than diss other states. Wait.. say I manage to pick up a 3GS from the Apple/O2 store here in the UK at say 9am GMT (shouldn't be a problem as there are two O2 stores and an Apple store about 30 seconds apart), that will mean I get it several hours before anyone in the US right? Just thinking aloud.. :p
No- UK and rest of Europe has to wait until 3 pm when the US stores open...:p

Louisville is home to UPS' WorldPort (http://www.pressroom.ups.com/mediakits/factsheet/0,2305,1468,00.html?mkname=upsairlines&srch_pos=8&srch_phr=worldport), pretty much the most awesome distribution center ever. Good luck to all who are hoping to get their iPhones soon...
That said, and I ususally don't even fall into the click-every-20-minute trap, mine is still showing "Prepared for Shipment" even though I pre-ordered through the Apple Store site at 3:06 p.m. (PST) on the day of launch. They're obviously not processing these orders First-In, First-Out...
Oh well, I guess it is just Wednesday, after all, and unlike some others, I haven't gotten my hopes up that it would be here before Friday. I guess the "First-come, First-serve" only holds for those who camp out at the stores :D

I'm in the nervous camp as well. My only concern is that when things come in from China sometimes they get put on a mandatory customs hold for a day or two (overnight shipping or not). I had a Lenovo machine back in 2006 that was held for 5 days. If that is the case, since Apple cut this one so close we may not see ours until next week. And we were some of the first to order

Remember when you pre-ordered the Harry Potter books from Amazon? (Err, maybe I'm talking to the wrong crowd here.) They had written all over them "Do not deliver before X". Amazon had major deals with UPS/FedEx/USPS to deliver these all on the same day (Saturday, no less!) There were severe penalties for anyone who delivered early. These delivery companies do this OFTEN and there's no reason that they won't *all* be held for delivery until the 19th. They're pros, they know what they're doing.
Now, that doesn't mean I'm not hoping that I'm the first stop on the route on Friday morning :)

Not if they want Apples business in the future. The iPhone is not being RELEASED until Friday. Apple would not be happy if UPS or Fedex broke the rules and decided on their own when Apples product gets released. While I can't prove it, I would bet it's in the agreement they have for the shipment that it will not be delivered before Friday.

I have 3 exceptions now from Kentucky. I talked to a UPS rep last night and she gave me a standard spiel about customs and how it causes delays, etc. Which could be true.
However, when I stated that I thought the exceptions were driven by Apple to ensure the correct delivery day she concurred. She stated that Apple does a huge amount of business with UPS and would have that kind of pull with them as far as changing delivery dates.
Just have to wait a bit more.

Exactly, the customer service people have certain generic responses to any given question. They don't know exactly what is going on. There isn't some special "Apple Delay" code that pops up on their screen. Already in place systems that are used for many different scenarios are being utilized to achieve this 'delay' in delivery. All these people being told they will get their phones tomorrow by 10:30am are just dealing with customer service people who are using all the information they have available to them, but they don't have all the info. This is a special shipping situation and not the same as when individual person A ships a package to person B.
We will all get our phones Friday with maybe a few possible (but unlikely) exceptions due to mistakes.

I just hope they are being honest. I have no reason to think they are not being that way with me either though.
It's not life or death though, but still nerve-racking and exciting!
I am in the EXACT scenario as you, just I ordered right after the keynote.

It appears I'm getting multiple holds. My iPhone 3GS just wants to come home UPS, let it come home...
what's the deal? You ordered and expected it to be delivered Friday, and it will be.

One big shipment that apparently does not seem to contain phones from people who ordered in the first few days from Apple.com
I ordered from apple.com the day after the keynote, and my phone is a member of that massive shipment.

I ordered mine two hours after the keynote, and I'm also a member of that shipment.

Mine finally shipped last night. Early this morning it had a delivery date of the 18th but that little section has disappeared since. I think its fine if we get it Friday but I think if we did get them ahead of time, it would definitely alleviate some of the server crushing that is bound to happen all day Friday as everyone tries to activate. My two little pesos.

The announcement was June 19th people. Not any earlier. Nerds. It's just two more days. Take a deep breath!:D

Yep. He can help iPhone open its Twitter account, too!
