The first YouTube videos claimed to have been recorded by the iPhone 3G S have started to appear (http://www.ifun.de/content/view/5569/1/). The quality of the recording is, of course, also affected by YouTube's compression but should give a feel for what the device is capable of in casual usage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-50BAXhxHTU
A second video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QMx6aLGWVU) has also appeared from the same uploader though this video appears to have been edited with music and multiple clips cut together. The aspect ratio is also different, raising some questions about the actual source of the video.
Meanwhile, iFun.de also posts some comparison shots (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ifun/sets/72157619781903241/) between the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S cameras. The images depict the iPhone box in close-up, accentuating the improvement with the new iPhone's auto-focus camera.

I'll definitely be waiting for you guys to post a better Youtube video. This isn't even an unboxing. haha. The "S" could be a sticker. Now what would be really cool is if some UPS guy filmed a pallet of iPhone 3G-Ss and said "Here they are!!!" :D

i thought phil said the new boxes used 30% less material/space than the old ones. that looks identical to my 2g box - obviously withing the 3gs label
edit: looks like some countries get the larger, older box based on the size of the power adapter.

You are not missing anything. It's a 30 second video of just looking at an iPhone box that has an "S" after the iPhone 3G. That's all the video is. I hope you are safe. I would not want to be in ANY country that is filtering my internet content for me.

low light conditions? really? I'm sure it won't be great. You really think the iPhone camera will perform well in low light conditions? That shouldn't even be a test, it's a camera phone with no flash. It'll probably be crappy.

Is that using the 2.2.x firmware or new 3.0 firmware? The new software clears up a considerable amount of blur (according to my testing) even on the iPhone 3G.

I got an idea for all the people who are going crazy about the video feature of the iPhone...
GO OUT AND BUY A CAMERA!
You all seem to forget that first and foremost, this device makes phone calls, even if Apple thinks it's a gaming device.
I saw someone's signature on here once said something to the effect of: "People who buy a phone based on the megapixel count are stupid."
In the end, don't get me wrong, I have an iPhone 3G and I enjoy all the added features it has. I do think it's cool and all, but a lot of people are putting way too much stock into the video feature. I'm waiting for the next iPhone because I'm not spending extra money ("early upgrade fee") for the slight upgrades, IMO. I can upgrade in January and I'll wait until June at that point.

The 2nd video is clearly a different aspect ratio. It looks like it's 16:9, and the 3GS is "only" capable of 640x480 (4:3 aspect ratio).
I call fake on that 2nd one. Unless the person who took the video trimmed the top and bottom to make it 16:9.

The pictures off of my 1st gen iPhone are terrible at best. No clarity and there is a pretty good haze around everything. Now, it is scuffed a tad, but still, its gawd-awful. When my 3GS comes in, I can't wait to take comparison pictures just to really see how much better it is.
I wont be using this thing to edit photos or anything, but it would be nice to have a camera that is at least decent enough that I can send a pic to someone else.

Look at this video (From the same guy:Bluefirerulz)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QMx6aLGWVU
It shows him using the 3GS while riding down the road and also doing some other filming. The quality is pretty spot on compared to some phone cameras with video recording. Also he records for over 2 minutes, so I guess there will not be a cap on how long you can record in any one session.

No cap on video recording time is awesomeness. My other phones that were video capable limited me to 15 or 30 seconds. Hmmm..... I'll wait for the masses to get their new phone on Friday, but I'm thinking the early upgrade just might be worth it *to me* :D

Why should I? Why should I always carry a camera with me, together with my phone, just in the case something funny happens which I want to make a video of? I don't take videos usually, but if a situation occurs where I have to /want to take a video - I always have my iPhone with me anyway, so hey.
You all seem to forget that first and foremost, this device makes phone calls, even if Apple thinks it's a gaming device.
The times where cell phones where cell phones with some additional features are over since we have smart phones, especially the iPhone. The calling function is actually one of the least used functions on my iPhone. Yes, I do make phone calls, but even more I use it for surfing, e-mailing, organizing my life etc.
I saw someone's signature on here once said something to the effect of: "People who buy a phone based on the megapixel count are stupid."

I'm actually surprised that Canon, Kodak or Nikon didn't come up with the "touch to focus" feature first. It looks likes a super easy way to control depth of field perfect for consumer cameras.

It was on a Sony Handycam that I owned about 4 or 5 years ago. Granted, that's a video camera, but it's been done before. The Handycam's LCD was touch sensitive and I could tell it where I wanted it to focus by touching the screen, just like the iPhone.

The iPhone is basically the first "convergence" device that doesn't suck. I also rarely use mine for calls, compared to the other things I use it for. We've got edit and share capabilities now right from the phone, so making the camera as good as it can be really is important.
And now that augmented reality is going to really take off now that there's a magnetometer, the camera is our "augmented eyes", and the higher resolution the better.

There are several reports that the iPhone 3GS comes in different package sizes, depending on how large the power adaptor for the respective country is. For example, the German power adaptor is larger than the US power adaptor, so the German iPhone 3GS comes in a larger packaging. The linked video is from a guy in Switzerland, and they use the same power adaptor as in Germany.

[...snip...]
While I do agree with some of what you're saying, I don't always have my big DSLR with me, and even carrying multiple devices (e.g., iPhone + some compact camera) is not always realistic. So, a device that has the camera and video features are important to me. Unfortunately the camera in my first gen iPhone isn't all that great, so I almost never use it. I'm hoping that the camera in the 3GS is much better - though the lack of a flash is annoying. In addition, I am hoping that the video quality is at least as good as the original Mino Flip (not the HD, of course). The video specs on the 3GS match those of the original Flip. If so, that's also a big help for those times when I really want to record something spontaneous that my son is doing. Do I expect the 3GS to replace my DSLR and video cameras? Absolutely not. Do I want acceptable/usable quality? Definitely. I don't think that's a lot to ask for in a high end device.

Dude its a compressed YOUTUBE video... Thats amazing for a cell phone.
No, that's not amazing. Amazing for a cell phone video would be a video where you could make out objects in the frame, as opposed to a blurry mess of pixels. This video is godly for a cell phone.
Which means either:
1) The camera in the 3GS is a superior piece of hardware in comparison to every other cell phone camera out there
or
2) This guy is pulling some kind of a hoax.
Without actual proof that it was from a 3GS, I'm going to have to go with option 2, esp. since he conveniently removed the sound.
However, you CAN tell that whatever camera was used to make this video has a CMOS sensor and not a CCD (you can tell by pausing the video when he's pointing the cam out the window of a moving car. The light poles seem to be warped from top to bottom, indicating the imaging sensor is capturing progressively from top to bottom over a relatively long period of time)

Wow, it looks really impressive without the YouTube compression added :-)
To everyone: Chrops was so nice to upload the original video file to my iDisk. It shows part of the video which is linked in this post, but not the compressed YouTube file, but the original one. If this is legit, the video quality is pretty cool.
Here's the file: http://files.me.com/riedrich/kjqtpo (11 MB).
Wow! that is great quality! And it compensates for lighting changes very quickly... (Watch as the camera points toward the shadows on the ground)
Awesome!!

Yeah the lighting adjustment ist cool, even m PowerShot doesn't do this (okay, it's an older model) but this was one of my mayor complaints about it. I'm now really lookingforward to shot a few videos at our next party :-D

Thats pretty impressive. Sure its not incredible quality and you can get better with a small dedicated camcorder, but I don't have a camcorder on me at all times, I do have my iPhone on me whenever I'm out, and I take a lot of pics. I never used to take pics, even when I had a reasonable camera phone, it was a hassle to take them and then to get them from the phone to the computer, with the iPhone though I take at least 3 or 4 pics a day, just random pics of the kids and my family, its so nice to have a record of them growing up and I now don't have gaps in the pictures where I haven't taken a pic for a few months and they have grown up loads.
I would love to be able to video them more, but getting the camcorder out is always a hassle, its never charged and I can never find a tape when I need one, and then I don't really watch it back much as again its all just a hassle.
For pure convenience this is really good. I thought the quality would be poor at best, and mostly unusable, but not the vids I have seen look great. I wasn't going to bother upgrading as I'm happy with my 3G and os 3.0 will make it even better, I was thinking next year would bring lots of upgrades that would make the change worthwhile, but seeing these, I'm really tempted now!

With respect to the second video, it's quite easy to crop a 4:3 video and make it appear to be 16:9. It's very likely that the editor just didn't include the letterbox portion when he (or she) uploaded the video - this is smart as you inherently create a smaller file by excluding the letterbox (black bars).
Motion picture films are cropped all the time, as 35mm motion picture film actually captures more image than is projected (in a 1.65 aspect ratio, anamorphic 2.35 is a different beast entirely).
In all likelihood, both YT videos are legit. :)
On the downside, you're more likely to be told to leave your iPhone behind around security-sensitive areas due to the cameras function(s). I never minded checking my Razr in, but I'd be more cautious about checking my iPhone.

Confused by the number of "negative" ratings for this thread. I guess people are just upset that their soon-to-be-obsolete iPhone 3G has a crappy camera compared to the new iPhone 3GS and they don't qualify for subsidized pricing yet, so they'll rate the thread negative and go on and on about how the 3G camera was covered in vaseline, etc

Wow, if this is real, I'm really impressed with the quality. Sure beats my 12MP FujiFilm F100fd digicam which also does 640x480 at 30fps. The exposure shift is fast on the 3Gs.

There was nothing in that video to prove it's a 3Gs. The box looked like it was from a 1st gen iPhone, we're being played.
So if he took a video of a cat you would say that it couldn't possibly be recorded using a 3G S because it's a video of a cat!?!

Just viewed this uncompressed file. Its 640x480 30pfs so that at least matches the spec of the iPhone.

Looks great watching that on an iPhone! Much better comparatively than a fair few phones on the market. I think Apple was basically hamstrung by Omnivision not having a sensor above 3Mpixels. As soon as they have a higher one with the same associated features, it'll head into the 4th gen iPhone

First of all, like others have said, I don't always have my camera with me but I DO always have my iPhone with me.
Second, show me a camera that lets you take stills and videos, EDIT the videos, AND upload them straight to YouTube without having to be anywhere near a computer.

Just like a gun, the best camera is the one you have on you. I have a camera but I find that when I actually want to take a picture, I don't have it with me. I do have my iPhone. So, a better camera is always welcome.

To all the people that don't understand the purpose and potential of a cell-phone camera:
I have SLRs, i have point and shoots and I don't want to get rid of them!
When I want to take Pictures, I grab the gear that suits my need for image quality yet fits the weight limits of the trip.
Now, when I'm just LIVING, not walking around with my cameras and I see something that is worth taking a picture of, maybe not from an artistic perspective but from an informative one. Now, what do I have in my pockets? Right, a swiss army knife, my car keys, my wallet... AND.... my phone!
So, to give you an idea of what I've used my Sony ericcson K750/K800 included cameras for, BEFORE i got the iPhone 1:
poster with date/place of event
sheet with important information that I didn't want to xerox or keep
bills for warranty issues (if I don't have a pdf), taking a pic is WAY faster than scanning!
funny/rememberable situations/occasions that appear out of nowhere!
a car accident
a coupon code at some store
etc etc.
needed the coupon code 3 months later, do you think I want to carry a stupid piece of paper around in my wallet? Do you think I want to keep all kinds of stupid little copies? NOOOO
If you don't see the use of a proper phone camera, your imagination is VERY limited!!!

Also, with the addition of music, it makes me wonder if the video editing allows you to mix in a song from your iPod? That would be hot.
I like Pink Floyd, but I wish he would have chosen a different song, I just felt depressed while watching it. : ) Maybe some Katrina and the Waves would have been better.
EDIT: Never mind, I see he edited the movie with iMovie...
wait, so does the video camera only record video and not sound?

3G S shoot very good pictures and record incredible good quality video.
It's as good as the 5 megapixel cameraphones out there and for the the major part of the users it's more than enough. If you want better camera buy a separate one, because the purpose of the mobile cameras are limited to non professional usage. That's all.
I think 3G S is a great deal with this functionality and the people who disagree can buy the normal 3G, for a freaking low cost. There's is no other phone like the iPhone, this is something I hope everyone in this forum totally agree.
I hope to get one soon, here in Spain.
