Installing Now :D
finally got download to start, but only by going back to my soon to be de-commissioned White book, as the update steadfastly refused to download to my new MBP 13".
Not good.

Liking 3.0 so far. Initially had connecting issues with youtube, but it's fixed!

Hmm... After upgrading to 3.0, my phone signal is significantly worse.
AT&T 3G in our area was not that great to begin with, but now my call outs fail most of the time. Also, I'm getting precisely zero calls at home. How is your phone signal experience in US?
Yeah, it looks like 3G signal is back to the "consider yourself lucky if you get one bar" issue we had with, err, I *think* it was 2.0.0 and maybe a couple more after that.

Any ideas as to where i complain to to get this fixed? Apple have taken my money, and now obviously i'm not going to be able to download this, so has anybody any ideas?
I'm guessing that the download is more than 0.4KB, right?
That's supposed to happen, it's the fact that a second download doesn't start that isn't right. The 0.4KB file is the one that iTunes downloads and registers as the purchase. This file, once downloaded, then directs iTunes to the actual update on Apple's server, which should then appear as a ~250MB (give or take depending on device) download underneath the 0.4KB file.

Hugely disappointed. After downloading, the two features I was most looking forward to are not working. The tilt function is kaput (I know people will say I must have dropped the phone etc, etc but I used the function to look at a pic just minutes before updating) which means no landscape keyboard and the Bluetooth is not "discovering" my Apple iBook G4, so no tethering either I suppose. Sigh

Love 3.0, got tethering working flawlessly, now I have no need whatsoever to jailbreak my phone!

Typing this from my Dell Mini 9 running 10.5.7 tethered to my iPhone! :D

Hi all,
I installed 3.0 on my 3G last night without any problems, however I have since noticed that it takes forever to load the App Store, and it takes even longer to load the iTunes app. Sometimes the iPhone goes to sleep before the stores have loaded.
I have also noticed that the uTube app isn't the quickest of the mark!
Anybody else have these issues?

If you double tap home when it is in sleep it will bring up the iPod controls and let you shake to shuffle. This can be useful! :)
Ahhh, very nice! Thanks for the tip!

Even though I feel that most of these updates should've been in the more earlier versions of the iPod Touch/iPhone software, I'm very content with 3.0.
Update also worked flawlessly this time.
Cheers!

Hi
Am I the only one who does not like auto rotation of iPod playing video? When I turn my iphone upside down the video rotates. This did not happen with 2.x firmware. Which means you can not watch movies while you are laying. There should be switch to turn this off.

Tethering works like a charm. So does MMS. Thanks TeliaSonera!
Americans would certainly benefit from more competition on the telecommunications front... AT&T gets away with murder simply because there's nothing there to keep them on their toes.

Still trying to get to the sever (-9807) error, been trying over 9 hours, is this still a problem for people?
Not sure if you're still having problems but the fix for this specific error was posted several pages back (several hours ago). Simply log into a second account (or guest account) on your mac and activate your phone through iTunes. After activation is cleared, return to your main mac account and connect to iTunes to sync as usual.

I am very happy with the update, about time too.
My only gripe is that you cant forward texts!!
Are they planing to issue a new release to activate this basic function?

That is what copy and paste is for.
Just copy the message to a blank sms message.
EDIT:
Just found that there is actually a specific forward function.
When you are in a conversation, press edit and then select the text you would like to forward.
Then press forward down the bottom (next to delete).

Well, having spent a day using and testing 3.0 I must say that I'm very impressed. Just waiting for the dev team now to release the jailbreak.
Does anyone know if stereo Bluetooth or MMS will ever be avaliable to us 2g owners once the jailbreak has been released?

It didn't run a full backup before the software update?
Nope, apparently not. I thought so to but when it was done it was cleaned out and could not do one thing about it.
I just had enough from Apple the phone company. I'm going to give the idiot-phone one more chance but I sure do miss my SE.

And you can't just sync your data why?
Because I had received a new machine since my former uMBP overheated to the point it was getting unusable. Didn't have time to wait for the time machine backup @ 260Gb and went ahead with iTunes thinking Apple knows their stuff.
Didn't think it would swipe the whole thing just to do an OS update. My SE didn't need do and I expected at least the same thing from iPhone. At the very, very least it could've given me a warning. Maybe it was because I hadn't 'authorized' iTunes yet but come on! Guess I was wrong, must've clicked the OK button wrong as well.
Thank you, once again, Apple for 'teaching' me in a rather parental way to sync before doing anything else, bleh!

:)Just did the 3.0 in my 3G... It took about 20min to d/load, another 10min or so to initially back up, and everything works!
I've since synced again and it's its usual fast self. Safari is faster, landscape keyboard in more apps work well, and the voice memo to email is hot.
Only 1problem: My trash can disappeared when viewing photos. I can't delete thru the iPhone. Where did it go???

I just noticed this morning that the "More" tab in my app store is gone now. It was there last night, but now the tabs at the bottom look like they were before I updated to 3.0. Has anyone else had this happen? (the tab is still there in the iTunes store though)

so I have an old firmware version that is jailbroken. Do I restore-backup and then upgrade to 3.0? I think that's how I've done this sort of thing in the past.

Lame update. I can't believe I was excited for this. For some reason, Apple didn't incorporate many of the simple 3Gs software upgrades for existing customers.
Oh well. . . at least there is cut and paste (2 years of waiting for that) and I can record the sounds of me going to the bathroom (no more calling and leaving it on voicemail :) ).

Dont know if it has been mentioned already, but you can now open links in to new tabs in Safari. Thank you Apple!!
I hit a link in a site and I went to the link in the same window but I happened to scroll down and it had 2 pages. I thought that was weird. It says 1 of 2 pages. I didn't get the tabs. Maybe on another site.

I downloaded the update lastnight and now cannot connect to the 3G network. I spent an hour this morning with Apple and ATT it departments and they finally told me this is a known issue..... Even the connection to EDGE is hard to get.
I don't know if this is a wide spread problem, but I'm in Tampa, FL.....
The support person recommended for anyone else not to download the update.
3G is back up and running now......

Does the new high contrast/accessibility option only come on the 3GS? I can't find it on my 3G after the update.
If it's only on the 3GS, then all I can say is another WTF Apple?

I have rebooted my iphone and do not seem to have the problem of the battery draining. See if that works
Unfortunately it did not...
Unless I switch to airplane mode, the battery just burns up. At home over 30 minutes of wifi use, the battery dropped about a third of it's charge. That never happened under version 2.0. By the time I got to work at 8:30 about 2 thirds of the battery was depleted... hmmm....

Are you insane? Everyones like "blah blah, i won't use cut copy paste, or landscape etc, or even push (which is odd), but everyones forgetting what 3.0 is really about. HARDWARE!
Think of all the cool hardware that will be available. Not as yet, but we may get gaming pads, analogue sticks, etc!

I might get another ipod with 3.0 already on it but for now my 1st generation does well.

I had a smooth update process. After playing around for awhile on my Edge phone, I've noticed that all seems to be running quite smoothly. Everything is snappier. I have also noticed better battery performance. I wasn't sure if my Edge phone would do well with the update, but it did. :)

Funny, I've found that 3.0 has caused my EDGE iPhone to run worse than when it was on 2.2.1.
It seems both laggy and jumpy at times. It almost feels like the OS isn't happy on my iPhone.
For example, when closing an App, instead of the App's screen fading to a point in the middle of the homescreen, it just ends in a flash and the homescreen appears.
When opening an app, there is more of a delay.
It takes forever for it to power on, and once it does, instead of the silver Apple shrinking and the homescreen zooming out, a black screen appears for a few seconds and eventually my 'Slide to Unlock" screen appears.
Turning from portrait to landscape in Mail is laggy and looks like a slow motion animation.
All of this stuff isn't happening all the time (except the power on behavior), but it's all happening enough to annoy me.
Hell, my iPhone seems more stable when it was jailbroken.
Nothing has crashed yet, which is good. EDIT: Scratch that. It just crashed in the middle of a game of "Let's Golf".
I'm thinking about doing a restore, anyone think that would actually help?

I downloaded the new 3.0 update, which adds MMS to the iPhone. Under Settings-Messages, however, there is still no MMS button! I went to the Apple site and looked it up, and they say "if the local carrier doesn't support MMS, this button won't appear."
Well, I have a local Sim card (Iraq) with a full account which allows MMS, so I don't understand why it doesn't work.
USAusers aren't seeing it because AT&T doesn't yet allow it, but my local carrier does, so I should be seeing it, right?
I guess if it doesn't show up I'll have to jailbreak/unlock/Pwn it.

Downloaded 3.0 when I got home from work. Wanted to wait until the craziness was over. Went flawlessly! Less than 20 minutes start to finish.
Now I'm resyncing after doing an App update. The back is being pokey, but that was to be expected for the first one.
I will be an iPhone dork the rest of the night trying to figure out all the new features. I will get away with it though because my wife is an iPhone dork too. :D

I've found that the iPhone 3.0 software is pretty cool; the thing I really like was that my camera seemed to perform faster. I also thought that the other features were cool, but I've noticed that my iPhone has become a lot slower; everything seems to lag now.

I have the exact same problems on my 3G phone. It's choppy, slow, and ran better on the old system. The battery life has been affected hugely by this upgrade. As usual, 3G doesn't work 95% of the time. Apple straight up lies about their products. This phone would be great if it worked like they say it should. Lies to get money, what's new.

How many people are having issues installing the update?
My phone took it well. I was actually surprised that it took so little time. My wife's took over an hour and has 'restored' three times and the Apple icon with the bar stays on the screen. It's throwing a lot of 'not the droid you're looking for' errors and a lot of 'unable' and other cryptic and bad sounding messages...
Any consensus on how many people are having issues and what if anything can be done to resolve them?
This couldn't happen at a worse time now with the Apple store's attention being taken over by the new 3Gs...

This may sound very naive but is it possible Apple has installed some sort of spyware in the release of 3.0 for the Iphone.
I bought a legally unlocked Iphone via the Apple Store in Hong Kong and have been happily using it for about a year, including downloading several apps from the Apple Store in Hong Kong.
I downloaded the update the other day and the first time I tried to get a "free" app from the HK store I got a message saying there were new Terms and Conditions. Erm.
I read them and one states that I must agree to only buy apps from the HK store when I am physically resident in Hong Kong and not to "attempt to use the service from outside the territory/country". It added that Apple could use "technlogies" to "verify such compliance". What the heck.
Like millions of other Apple users, i travel frequently and am outside of HK for long periods so there is no way I can enter into what they describe as a legally binding agreement.
Presume this is an attempt to curb the grey market in Iphones but I do not think it has been fully thought through. I am seriously thinking of dumping my Iphone and other Mac computers because of this.
Which brings me to the heading. What "technologies" are they talking about to verify such compliance. Is there another function in the new update that we should know about?

Should have added that I was outside of Hong Kong when I tried to download a free app and received the notice of new Rules and Conditions. Unsure, if the same would have happened if I was in Hong Kong or, indeed, if everybody is receiving this notification.

If the terms and conditions are the same, why would the message refer to them being "new". And it seems more than coincidental that the "new" requirement came on the same day the software update for the Iphone arrived. I am not going to sign, that is for sure.

If any other Original iPhone peeps (or even 3G peeps) are having trouble with their phone, the "restore" function in iTunes did the trick for me. Just remember 2 things: save any photos first that are in the phone; restore as "new phone", not restore from back up.
My battery and bug issues have all disappeared now.:)

Not only to curb the grey market but also to prevent people from setting up diff accounts in diff countries. e.g. promo codes in the US store..
The technologies they could use are tracking the app to the UDID. That way, they can do a remote wipe. Or remove rogue programs that have been installed.
Quite possible in future Mobile ME: Use the iPhone find feature and discover phones like yours and do a remote wipe from the US. :D:p
Offtopic from this thread: I must have had the quickest install on my iPod touch: 4 1/2 minutes. Possibly because I really dont use much of it as well except for storing documents in Air Sharing....
