No, Apple wants you to pay 500 dollars to upgrade to a 3GS to have the numbers on your battery indicator. Though it works on jailbroken iPhones since 1.0.

Yes, apparently the 2.x jailbroken phones retain the percentage indicator when upgraded to 3.0. Can't speak personally for this (never jailbroken... yet?) but that's the word around the forums.

I had a jailbroken 2.x 2G iPhone and when I updated to 3.0, the %s did not appear.
