No push on App Store?

I really hope I've missed something here but I can't believe that Apple hasn't included push notifications for the App Store! It just seems like such an obvious thing to include and one of smaller improvements I was looking forward to in 3.0. I'm fed up with having to manually check for updates!

I was thinking the same thing actually, other than the App Store having to be run so that it can gather information about the installed apps on your phone, it's completely doable.

It's a thing you would expect but I would probably turn it off, not sure I would want to waste battery on that, don't really check for updates or care for them all the time.

But the option should be there!

Agree. I was thinking that myself. I was kind of expecting it as an obvious improvement. Apple dont seem to think so.

srsly plz search on the forums, there at at least 3 threads ( one of the lists making it to the top of MR.com yesterday) of applications that already support push. there at a handful of them that are 3.0 compatible because the developers would have to make it have push

They're not talking about push applications, they're talking about it being used for the App store which I agree, it should be an option since it'd be nice to know when there's an update rather than having to open the app for App store itself.

Please read, this thread is about the app store pushing updates not apps in the app store with push, HUGE difference!

I wasn't talking bout the apps that support push - i was wondering why Apple haven't enabled the App Store itself to notify you when an app is ready to be updated. And when I searched the forums I couldn't find anything to relate to this post and I'm very sorry if it has been covered before.

I don't particularly want a pop up message, or even a sound too much, but just a push badge as opposed to a fetch badge

hmm i they had updated pushed to the phones like a notification it would be cool , keeping people up to date on the go :-) but i don't think i would have it enabled if they do choose to add this in the future.

I actualy think that the app store does push/run in the background. Last night I was having issues syncing things for the iPhone with thugs for the mac. In an attempt to fix this I installed an older version of the app. The moment my phone finished syncing a badge appeared on the app store without opening it. I think they are pushing a badge only and not letting you opt out of it.

i would just have batch notifications activated... that way it wouldnt bother me but i wouldnt have to open the app store and check manually... would be pretty cool... but i guess itd create a massive load on the push servers if an update is released for an app with a high install rate... just imagine theres an update for like shazam which probably everybody has installed... and everybody would have to get the notification at the same time...

Strange as it might sound, it would actually be very difficult to do using the current push framework. Apple don't know what apps you have on your phone so can't just push notifications based on a when an app is updated and to have a notification of when an app is added or removed back to apple would raise huge complaints about privacy...

thats a very valid point and one i obv didnt think of! hmm I'm sure Apple could work something out? maybe it could use the same fetch method as the old email system and just periodically check every day or something?

Maybe the app store could have some sort of "add to cart" or "wishlist" so we can track installed or wanted apps then they can push which apps we have asked it to.. i am always on the app store and its annoying manaully checking, i removed app-sniper because my back up didnt like it and now it would be good if we had some notice of updated apps without going to the store because now every bloody time i goto the store it asks me for my password!
