I am taking a trip and I have some folks who will probably be interested on seeing where I am at a given time. Since the iPhone has Location services and sharing I figure there might be an app for it? Is there?

Since they can't run in the background, it wouldn't work very well... at all. You'd have to put off using the phone at all the entire trip and just let the app stay open the whole time to track you.

Well I am driving so I shouldn't be using the phone anyways.

That would be cool. There are handheld Garmin units that do just that.

I've been wondering the same thing and the only solution I could dream up is giving out the MobileMe password to allow others to "track my iPhone". However, that seems like a bad idea. :) However, the wifey and I know the passwords so they can locate each other (via the sound) in an emergency if the phone is set to silent.

Now you've got me searching the app store! :D

Mobile Me - $ 100 per year. But you have to of course give them temporary admin access to MM account.

The new MobileMe feature would allow it... but that's an entire SERVICE as opposed to just an app. And thus, it is $99.

If they have an iPhone or iPod touch then you could use heyway.which uses push notification to show where you are.but that wouldn't do realtime tracking.you would have to click to show them where you are.and of course this uses data from the celluar network.which may he a problem if your abroad.

Loopt I believe does this. AT&T has a pay service that does it but it will only track other family plan members. I would think we'd start to see more apps with this feature out soon.

I'm not finding this in the App store...is it only for iPhones that are jailbroken?

The app GPS Tracker allows you to do this online. Loopt allows you to do it if the other person has an iPhone, and it's much preferred quite honestly since I doubt your folks will be looking at you 24/7. Loopt is only delayed by like 5-10 seconds, but online web pages might be different, who knows.

Yes, if the other people have iPhones or other loopt-compatible phones (there are quite a few -- check out the loopt website), loopt is pretty nice. Not only can others see where you are, but you can also link with facebook and twitter (people can see your loopt updates there).

The app GPS Tracker allows you to do this online.

I used GPS Tracker during a recent cross country trip and it worked well. It even embedded a map with position into my Facebook page. I only updated my position about every half hour though rather than leave it running since I didn't have a charger in the moving truck.

eta: looks like what I called GPS Tracker and Instamapper are the same thing.

Do they have an iPhone? If so the 'hey where are you' app is just what you're looking for. When they want to know your location they can ping you with a push notification that prompts you to open the app and send back your own push notification to them w/ your location included. Very cool app.

Loopt is cooler than "Hey where are you". :D

Loopt has links to facebook and twitter, and can also link with some other (non-iPhone) phones. Check it out. App store link:

Google Latitude (http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/latitude/intro.html)?

It doesn't run in the background (because it's not allowed to), and it's a web app. You just fire up the page, sign in, update your location and whoever is added as your friend in Latitude can look up your latest updated location in their web browser.

It's free too.

+1 for a recent trip to Colorado. I just left the phone on the dashboard as we went along. It worked pretty well and folks were able to follow us with the application on my facebook page. As an added bonus, GPS tracker displays your altitude on the screen. That was fun as we were traveling in the mountains since my stupid TomTom doesn't display altitude.
