Now that Flip is owned by Cisco, there are certainly enough dollars available to do good things.

A totally integrated device will always require some tradeoffs over single use devices. The latter products though have to stay ahead technically or at least on a price/feature ratio.

He talks a lot about resolution, but there's more to video quality than just that. My Flip Ultra that takes 640x480 video is much better than the iPhone 3GS, or any consumer-level digital camera I've seen, even though they all do 640x480 too. And the newer Ultras do 720 HD.

That said, the iPhone is only going to get better as the years go by. There will always be video cameras that far outperform any cell phone, but it seems to me that small point-and-shoot cameras like the Flip will eventually be folded into all-in-one devices like the iPhone. Give it 3 or 4 years. But in the meantime, I will definitely buy another Flip or 2.

Hear hear! I've got a Flip Mino right now which is terrific and only cost me $180 (I believe the price has come down since the HD model was released). Compare this to the $1540 or so for an 8GB iPhone 3G with 2 year AT&T contract and the Flip wins the price comparison hands down. The Flip is also dead simple to use -- you push the red button to start shooting and you push it again to stop shooting.

I must admit, though, that I'd love to see the iPhone's touch-to-focus technology brought to the Flip line -- a Flip Touch, if you will, with the requisite auto-focus lens. I would still consider that to be dead simple enough for the Flip line and a very worthy upgrade.
