I'm thinking of buying an external drive from OtherWorldComputing. I'm looking at the 250GB Mercury Elite Pro 7200RPM FireWire 800+USB 2.0/1.1 that uses a Hitachi DeskStar 7K250 drive in it.

Does anyone have any experience with these drives - how loud are they? I'm looking for a 250 GB (or more) HD but want it to be cool (temp-wise) and quiet. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

take a look at lacie triple-interface drives (fw800/fw400/usb2) - those are quiet because there's no fan inside, and run cool because those cases are made of aluminum. they have hitachi drives inside and have 2yr warranty. up to one terabyte ;)
