View Full Version : Frigid winters or sweltering summers, which can you tolerate more?

Being from Atlanta... we do get all four seasons, but summer more than anything. And over the past week it's been at least 90 and humid everyday.

Just wondering what you guys can tolerate more... winter or summer.

Mine changes from season to season, but I think (even as hot as it is) i can tolerate summer more.

Winter is just plain uncomfortable. Can't really enjoy the outdoors when it's 15 degrees and windy.

I live in North Texas and it's 101 outside right now, and reasonably humid (although less so than in recent days).

I can tolerate just about any cold temperature you throw at me, as long as there's no ice or snow involved. I hate the hot temperatures.

My reasoning is that when it's cold you can always add longer sleeves, or a jacket, etc. When you're going to the store stripped down to a t-shirt and shorts, there's not much else you can do to dress "cooler."

I much prefer the colder weather. For one thing, being a pasty t'northern Englandshirer I'm not designed for extreme heat, and it's much easier to warm yourself up than it is to cool yourself down.

I'm from Georgia as well, and I'm much more able to take hot summers than cold winters. I'd rather have it 105 degrees outside than 30. I don't do well in cold weather. It's miserable. I can't stand being all bundled up and restricted by clothing, and even then still being cold. I've always found it's always a lot easier for me to cool off if I'm hot than it is to warm up if I'm cold.

Same here, I'm from SC. And we really only have 3 seasons. Winter, which usually isnt very cold- our cold lasts from mid Jan to early March usually. Spring and Fall are usually only a few weeks each, and they are so similar, I consider them one season split in two. Not to mention, again, they only last a few weeks. Then from pretty much May through early October is Summer.

I would rather have this than frigid winters like my friends in Calgary and Wisconsin have.

Cold for me, and 30 is not cold. Though I can stand warm, having just returned from West Africa, 100 degrees, 90% humidity, I prefer cold, Reminds me of this past winter when my father and I went out for some father-son time, was a beautiful morning, only -2°F.

Crank the AC and open a cold beer and watch the girls in bikinis! Cold weather is just cold.

I lived in Duluth, Minnesota, many years ago. Was there for about 2 years. After that, I said no to cold weather. Since then I've lived in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Las Vegas, San Antonio, Singapore and now Florida.

I like very hot showers in winter, they keep me warm for a few hours but I find toes and fingers to return back to normal quicker than any other part of my body. Which leaves me with thick socks and hot drinks (hot cups to hold :D) to keep it all hot again.

But yea heat just saps my energy. Everytime I'm in Poland or Spain during their hot summers I just don't function properly at all. Bloody body.

That sux. 82 indoors is like 90 outside heh. I usually don't like the lame A/C units that stick out of the window, but until central unit is fixed, I would get one of those.

Winter is always preferable. You can always put on another sweater, jacket, add another log to the fire, etc. if it's cold. When it's this hot out, once you're naked, that's it.

I suppose it would help more if my landlord wasn't such a cheapskate with regards to the quality of the air conditioner here. My handy little desk thermometer is currently saying 101.5º outside, 81.4º inside. I'm in a tank top and shorts with the desk fan blowing on me, and I'm still hot.

I'll take sweltering summers any day - life sucks especially badly if you have close to 6-7 months of winter like here we do in MI.

I enjoy a warm breezy evening walk and nice sunny days. Weather here feels like living in a prison for 6 long months of the year.

Summer time. I'm California born and raised - anything below 60 degrees is getting a tad too chilly for my tastes ;)

But I also live in an area that does not have a lot of humidity so our summertime weather is awesome. 85 degrees with a slight coastal breeze = Heaven!!

Norwegian here. I'll take winter anyday. At wintertime, I can shut the doors and windows, crank the heat up and relax inside. At summertime, I'll die wherever I go.

Which makes it ironic that I spend quite a few Christmases in Australia, but I digress...

I can handle the cold better, since I'm already pretty exothermic, and you can always just add more clothing. Maybe if I could go to work in just shorts and sandals during summer, it wouldn't be too back when it's hot. Unfortunately not...

I would take winter over summer. I can't stand being hot. I'll give you today for example. Always on the hottest day of the year the air conditioning at work breaks and usually takes several days to fix (which was today). Yesterday and today were some pretty hot and humid days in Chicago. I would rather wear layers and take something off that just be hot when it is cool or cold.

I'd rather be freezing and shivering then hot and exhausted.

I live in Texas, and I'm not sure I've ever shivered here for any length of time. It doesn't get cold enough.

I'm pretty hot-natured - I don't really start wearing long sleeves until it drops below about 50, and below about 40 I'll start bringing a jacket with me to work. I don't own a coat.

There was a time I was driving home from Austin and my car broke down in the middle of nowhere at 4:00 am. It was around 40 degrees outside, dark, and I hadn't packed anything with long sleeves. I couldn't run the engine for heat. It took a tow truck nearly three hours to get to me, and by that time I was seriously starting to worry if I'd make it for the cold (I was in a t-shirt and jeans).

All that said, I'd still rather go through that again than break down on a day like today and wait it out with no air conditioning.

Winters for me. You can have fun outside and not feel guilty about staying in. During summer, even in 100+ temps, you feel obliged to have "fun" even if it means roasting your internal organs. If you stay at home, you feel like you're wasting your summer.

I actually hate summers, but I think I'm alone on that.

Sounds like my home state. We really have three seasons, since spring and fall are pretty short. It's one of the reasons we don't have pretty foilage in the fall. It goes from warm to cold really quick. I have a friend who says Feb. needs to be its own season, since you can experience all four seasons in a short period of time.

Anyway, I can handle heat better, I guess because I grew up in it. I hate wearing so many layers of clothing. I love wearing shorts/Tshirts type stuff. Plus, I'm a beach bum at heart. What bugs me most is wet and cold, which pretty much describes winter here. 33 and rain. Bleh.

I'm curious about some of the responses. Quite a few people are saying that it's easier to warm up than it is to cool down, but does it ever get so hot for you that you can't just step in the shade? I've been to some really hot places (and even lived in them) but never felt the urge to take all my clothes off because of the heat (that urge was prompted by other external factors :D). Being a SAD sufferer (though not as bad these days), I dread winter. The cold just makes it all worse... especially here where it can go as low as -40 (f or c).

Stupid Fahrenheit, I can never tell if 30 is actually cold? or 90 is actually hot. Lets find a system that actually makes sense people cough**Celsius**cough

I'll lead by example one this one, -30 or less is a little too cold, on the other hand, 35 above is a little too hot (especially with humidity). Luckily, where i live its wickedly dry and almost never gets colder than 35. On the other hand -40 isn't uncommon

I definitely prefer colder weather. My comfort zone is 10-20 C. 30 C is nearly unbearable, I sweat like crazy and even wearing only a Speedo wouldn't help if temps got higher than that. Below freezing is no treat, but I can always put on a coat, gloves, and hat. I can build a fire, but I can't build an air conditioner. I can't live with zero humidity either, my throat and sinuses get dried out and I get nosebleeds.

Moving from the Midwest to CA I can tell you that CA has one only one season and that's Mild Summer w/a few weeks of relative hot and cold. ;) I've been in the desert in the summertime and it sucks, IMO. I prefer a dry heat to a humid heat but when it feels like I'm standing in front of an open oven set on broil I draw a line. Speaking of humidity, going outside in summer humidity so bad you almost instantly sweat through your shirt is miserable.

Okay, so your body generates heat, right? So that means in summer if you were to do something you would get hot, with no way to lose the heat naturally/easily. But in Winter, you stay cooler naturally and hence more comfortable.

So it'll be unbearably cold for me. I can concentrate on the task if I'm cold but I can't concentrate if I'm sweating into my clothes.

SUPERSTEVE9219

whenever someone asks me this I always say Winter.

You can throw on a blanket, or some heavy clothes to warm up in the winter, you can't just throw on anything to cool down during the summer. It's just a lot easier to heat up than it is to cool down.

Here in western NY we get extremes in both. I can tolerate heat a bit better if I have to be outside - but throw in humidity and it's living hell. If it get too cold I start having a hard time breathing. BUT I have light skin so I burn easily if I'm out in the sun.

It gets to well below zero in the winter (-15º) and today it's creeping up to 90º.

It is true that California's winters are relatively mild, which is probably why I prefer them. If I had to endure -20 degree temps for three months out of the year, I would probably long for summer too.

A college buddy of mine, your Typical SoCal Surfer Dude, who never met a beach he didn't like, visited relative in Missouri one summer. He came back regaling me with how miserably hot it was. This from a guy to whom anything under 80 degrees was "cold" and 95 was "average." What we wasn't used to was the 95%+ humidity. Well, I'm Canadian, and personally, I love summer. about 25C, 45% humidity is good. Calgary winters can be ridiculous, 2 feet of snow and with windchill as cold as -45C.

4. icestorm knocking out power for over a week and temps not getting out of the 30's.

On the flip side, not having A/C when the temps get so high that the ice in your freezer melts (yes, it's happened to me) is no picnic either.

LethalBut your pipes won't freeze if you lose power in the summer for a week when its 90 degrees. They will freeze if you loose power for a week in 20 degree temps.

No, your pipes won't freeze. But if you're old and it's that hot without A/C you'll die!If it's cold and you are without heat you will die also!

It doesn't take much for pipes to freeze.

winter b/c it's like going hiking, camping, hunting or anything in the outdoors which follows the old adage:

"what you put on, you can take off and you can't take off what you don't have on" which means, in the winter, dress yourself for the cold and if you warm up, peel a layer off to regulate the heat.

You can do that in winter, but we're screwed in the humidity (can't put on what you don't have).

that said, I do regularly sing Bruce Springsteen's "Girls in their summer clothes. " :)

I'm goings to say neither. I'd much prefer it to be about 70 degrees outside all year long. Good golf and outdoor weather.

Move to Kansas City, here we get both!

And my vote goes towards summer, you can't take a dip in the pool in the winter!

cold weather is easier to tolerate, but i prefer warmer weather, even if it is too hot.

It's 10pm and 84 degrees (29C) and the humidity's fairly low and I love it.

I like the heat but only if it's dry. I always feel as though I'm going to die when I'm in someplace humid. What's the point of living there if you have to spend your summer inside?

I could stand a cold winter if the skies were blue all the time, but I'm also a SAD sufferer so grey skies no matter the temperature are awful.

Give me the cold, bitter Winter! I hate the heat during the Summer [humidity here in TX sux]; I'd rather bundle up in a sweater anyway...:)

I prefer cold over extreme heat. The problem with heat is that being in it makes you sweaty and then you feel disgusting and like you need a shower. With cold, it can stick with you a bit, but get warmed up and you feel fine.

to "Frigid winters or sweltering summers, which can you tolerate more?"

I think flapjacks / cheese biscuits would be equally appropriate poll options.

I'm from southern Connecticut and I don't own a coat, long sleeve anything or pants. T-shirts, short sleeve polos and shorts all year round. No gloves, boots, or winter hat either.

I generally don't enjoy the heat but I can tolerate it for the most part. Also I love the cold (obviously).

I'm not really sure, because I never been in very cold temperature for that long, but I think I prefer cold weather. Where I live it gets really hot and I hate it. Its supposed to be 107 today .

i really prefer cool temperatures. To me the best part of the year is over when it hits 70ºF in the late spring, and I only heat my house to 60º in winter. In the summer when a really hot day is forecast, I get up at 5am and close up the windows and draw the shades so it will stay cool in the house all day. We are lucky in the mountains because it often cools way down into the 50s during the night. Natural air conditioning :)

I said summer earlier...but if I had to deal with either one inside a house with no central A/C or Heat, i would have to select winter then.

There is nothing worse than a hot, humid, stuffy, home.

Being from Atlanta... we do get all four seasons,
No, you don't. :p
Winter is just plain uncomfortable. Can't really enjoy the outdoors when it's 15 degrees and windy.
Sure you can, just bring snowshoes.
But yea heat just saps my energy. Everytime I'm in Poland or Spain during their hot summers I just don't function properly at all. Bloody body.
And just think, Southern New England has a average summer high similar to Barcelona.
I am the complete opposite. I rather sweat to death then freeze to death. I rather it be 100*F everyday than have anything below 60*F
Anything above 50 calls for shorts.
all i know is that the roads dont become uber dangerous in heat. snow and ice are not fun to drive in
Asphalt can break up if it gets too hot. Nothing beats busting through drifts in a Subaru though. :p
I live in Southern California but go to uni in Fairbanks, Alaska sooooo... I GET BOTH EXTREMES. Summers at home reach up to 130 degrees and Winters in uni go down to -50 and I must say, I STILL prefer the winter in Alaska!

There's a college in Fairbanks?

I would say we do get all four season in Atlanta.(although spring and fall go by quickly) But in winter, there are a few weeks where we dip into the 20's and teens...that's enough winter for me! We don't get snow or anything, but on average we're in the 30's.

And of course we all know about summer.
