2g Unlock ? Is Redsn0w Even Necessary

I,ve had version 2.2.1 unlocked for some time but never installed cydia and dont plan to when i update to 3.0 so if im not really JB and just need my phone unlocked do i even need to use redsn0w if the baseband has not been updated. If this is the case when i update should i do it through restore or update, I had read some where that using the restore will cause the phone to need activation but if you were to use update it doesnt and works fine.............. What do think?

I think you should be fine. I did exactly that last week (used update) and had no problems. The only reason I might still jailbreak is to get Swirly MMS back... unless there's a newer better way to get MMS on a 2G iphone.
