2007 Macbook + External Problems

I'm having an issue. I like to use my macbook with a Dell External monitor, but also at times like to use the macbook in clamshell mode.

Most of the time, I'll have the external display set as the main monitor (with menubar and dock). So if I want to close the macbook and use the display it works. But when I open the Macbook back up, the monitor doesn't come on. I have to go to detect displays in sys pref. to turn it back on. Any tips?

That's standard operations for clamshell.

Don't go into clamshell mode if you want to use both displays. You'll have to detect displays.

hmmm im not too sure how to solve this issue for you but you can put "detect display" in your menu bar to make thing a little easier for yourself :)

Thanks. I thought about doing that but didn't notice the option was there.

I thought it had worked previously without me having to detect the displays, but I guess not.
