Dropped calls: An AT&T problem or iPhone?

Have had the 3G for the last year and just got my wife a 3G S this week. I absolutely love the phones and applications that I can get along with it. However, I am near the end of my rope on dropped calls. I would estimate that at least 25% of my calls end up being dropped at some point. Was hoping the 3G S would be better but alas, 2 of the first three calls my wife place were dropped.

I'm just trying to figure out if this is just a result of AT&T or the device itself. I've done all the updates and like I said, my wife's brand-spanking new 3G S is doing the exact same thing. I'm in Chicago. I swear if I get one more "Call Failed" message my phone is going to end up in the Chicago River.

I just got one today too, and with the same problem. About 25% of my calls end up dropped. Usually they start with 2 seconds of silence (like I miss the other person saying "Hello?") but then after a couple minutes, dropped. It even happened when I was explaining the problem to AT&T, which is good.

They told me to take note of the calls - who I'm calling, where I am, when in the conversation it happens, and call them tomorrow. I hope I just have a dud phone and they can exchange it. This is annoying.

Most of the people face these trouble, even i got this problem a couple of times. So since all are getting these type of problems there 99% possibility that the mistake must be with AT&T and there is only 1% of chance for the device to go faulty.

Huh? Not true. I've heard very little about problems with dropped calls with the 3GS. Also, if AT&T were the problem, there would be issues with non-iPhones on their networks. When I was describing the problem to customer service yesterday, they said "we've heard no problems with the network in your area" so I would say the problem is almost certainly with the iPhone.

it is definitely a problem specific to iPhone. everytime i pass a semi with i assume it has to be cb radio my call gets dropped. i think it has to do with the way the iphone accesses the network. dropping calls only seems to happen when i am out and about. in my house no drops at all.

I've had this problem with the 3G and now my 3GS - I've been with AT&T for almost five years, using multiple phones and never had any non-iphones act this way.

None of my friends with 3g's complain of this problem. It's usually
the network and/or terrain. And having worked for a cellphone provider years ago, some people are just always complaining about dropped calls whether there's a real problem or not. Conclusion-cellphones are not perfect. Network's are not perfect. User's are not perfect.
