I'm running Panther on a 800 MHz G4 iBook. I don't currently have any Classic startup folders. I bought a used copy of Mac OS 9 today that I wanted to install, but it won't boot up (yes, I held down the 'c' key). I think the problem is that it's 9.0 and apparently I need 9.1 or 9.22. I checked out Apple's support website and I can update for free to 9.22.

Do I have to buy a 9.1 or 9.22 install disc and then update it? :(

The iBook G4 will not boot into any version of MacOS 9. MacOS 9.2.2 can run only in Classic mode on your machine. You are going to have to extract Classic from the restore disks that came with your machine. An alternative might be to copy a friend's installation of MacOS 9.2.2. Next time, don't delete Classic.

Classic is on your Software Restore disks. Mr. Me is right--the new iBooks won't boot into anything but OS X. Classic mode only.

yes, the G4 ibooks don't boot into os9 - if you want the os9, you'd need a G3 ibook. or a tibook. or a pre-fw800 powermac. you get the picture ;)

I have Japanese restore discs - pretty much useless to me. That's why I bought OS 9 - I want it in English.

I think what I'll end up doing is getting someone to send me their 9.22 install. Pretty sure that's legal and all, given that I now own 2 licenses for OS 9 in multiple languages :p
