iOS NSURLConnection -> ssl -> threads

I'm connecting to a https service that will initiate a ssl tunnel for the rest of the connections to go through. When creating the initial connection I have to connect to an URL using NSURLConnection, how do I make sure that this connection is accepted and valid before I send the rest of the connections. And for the 2nd part should I create a new thread for the connections? Thanks for any input.
