Which firmware on 2nd Gen Touch?

Even with the possible impending release of the 3rd gen Touch, a friend of mine wants an iPod Touch NOW, and they wanted to know which firmware version it comes with. Is it still preloaded with 2.2.1 or does Apple now put 3.0 on the 2nd Gen as standard?

Could anyone who has bought a Touch after the release of 3.0 please answer.

If it has been sitting on a shelf at the store, it will have 2.2.1 ... there is really no way to tell.
