wow. all i gotta say is wow.
I got invided over to my firends (his name is Rafael) house today, and he said he had a surprize for me. guess what it was? LongHorn. I got to try it out, and I can deffinatly say (if it was releced tommrow) it will give 10.3 a VERY good run for its money. There isn't as much bloating as you would think. He sent me some pictures over AIM.
To prove these pics are legit: look at the date in all the long horn pics. and compair it to the time and date at which this post was made.
Look at the menu bar. It has AIM on it with the AIM address of ************. if you look at my profile, my AIM address is THAT!
looks like micro$oft did something sorta-right this time
If you have any questions feel free to ask me, but unfortunatly i cant stay up all night answering posts, i have exams tommrow, but i should be back on the forums at 3 PM Eastern time (usa)

hmmm.....while it does have a much more pleasing look than XP, this is most likey the "low end" interface (out of the three that are being developed and ultimatley released, in order to accomidate varying hardware levels). It is almost identical to XP, and does not appear to be much of an advancement. The time of truth will be when the two new interfaces are shown....those will surley tax our CPUs and infringe on plenty of Apple patents
One question though, did you play with the file system at all?

...speaking of patent infringments.....if that last pic is of Longhorn, than I think Apple Legal might have some very good grounds for a lawsuit :D
(for the record, I do realize that it is OS X)

What is there to play with? Longhorn is still using NTFS iirc, because WinFS isnt ready yet, and Microsoft, unbelievably, still wont be able to include what they originally wanted in WinFS with the final release of Windows, even with a little bit of luck.

Yes, I was going to mention that recycle bin myself. Complete rip off. As well as the gel pill-like minimized buttons at the bottom.

Well first of all this is not the latest alpha release of longhorn, this is an earlier build that your friend probally got off of a P2P network, unless he is a legit MSDN member.
We have the latest Longhorn in our labs for testing, and the cheap aqua interface is no longer present--it has been replaced by a darker blue theme and a slate theme. You can see both *current* themes at www.winsupersite.com.
As of now, Longhorn is not feature complete and Microsoft keeps taking promoted/promised *features* out of Longhorn due to "time constraint". These early Alpha builds of Longhorn much like the early builds of Whistler (aka XP) will not be anything like the shipping version.

May 28, 2004, 01:46 AM
Wow, that's even uglier than the earlier builds. I actually REALLY liked the earlier ones (all dark blue, with very subtle defining lines)... but the pseudo Mac OS X 10.0.0 Aqua-style buttons are just ugly.
Ah well.

FAKE!
That is Windows XP with a Longhorn theme and sidebar app. There are even Longhorn conversion kits out there for XP now.
I have the latest Alpha of Longhorn, it sucks! Not to say it won't be good when it's complete, but they are currently in the very early stages, and it's still ***** (as you'd expect from anything in alpha release).

Well, I usually don't take people who spell Microsoft with a '$' very seriously, but I will bite this time. It looks similar to the longhorn beta, but that wouldn't be hard to do using Windows XP and 3rd party applications. I would like to see that person, open the command prompt, and not photoshop out the version output, so that I can see what version of NT the system is running. Because I have my doubts that something that doesn't act bloated, unstable, etc.. is truly a beta release, which is what longhorn's current state is.
iJon
May 28, 2004, 03:40 AM

May 28, 2004, 11:39 AM
Real or fake, why the aqua buttons everywhere?
Secondly, it seems to have 2 many styles. Bubbly aqua like and smooth tech like. Not sure the combination of the two extremes?
Laslo Panaflex
May 28, 2004, 11:56 AM
Yes, this is a Fake, not longhorn at all. And just for the record, build 7074 the current Alpha, Alpha sucks. It has a horrible memory leak in explorer in which your computer slows to a hault after being on for a day. Plus, you can enbable nifty 3D effects, but they are run in software only, and are verey slow.
Longhorn is not going to come out anytime soon, and if they decided to release it tomorrow, all I could say is WOW, microsoft has gone insane, because NO ONE will buy it.

It amazes me that people enjoy doing this fake version screen stuff. You want the longhorn your friend has, visit www.stardock.com and download object desktop, windowsblinds, iconpackager, and windowsfx.

May 28, 2004, 01:34 PM
All I see is more eye-candy thrown onto the same dysfunctional windows interface, with a sidebar that mostly just takes up a lot of space.Which would make sense, if those shots are just a dolled-up installation of XP. The sidebar WAS in the screenshots I had seen earlier at winsupersite.com, though. Takes up a lot of room doing pretty much the same stuff as the menubar icons do in a fraction of the space in OS X. And there's no way you'll ever get me to prefer the Taskbar over the Dock.
SiliconAddict
May 28, 2004, 01:56 PM
DAMN! Beat me to it. That IS XP. Your friend is BSing you. All the screen shots I'm seeing are based on Longhorn themes for Windows XP. Example:
http://www.themexp.org/screenshots/large/vs/16130.jpg
10 bucks that he is running either style XP or the more likely Stardock's Object Desktop that is a suite of apps designed to tweak the **** out of Windows GUI the reason I'm guessing the latter is because of the diff icons. He's probably using icon packager to get them. I have gotten my desktop so close to looking like OSX Panther that a few friends who are Mac users would swear I'm running OX X.
Also another tipoff is the fact that your friend grayed out the system properties and didn't leave the longhorn build number. Finally, at least on my copy on the desktop it displays the Longhorn build number on the lower right corner. Its not there.

May 28, 2004, 05:17 PM
what's even worse is the fact just the eye candies was enough to convince someone that longhorn is "better" than xp.
i'm more interested in if longhorn will address a lot more fundamental problems with windows, like security, dll hell, registry mess, etc. (and please, even xp only managed to kluge to "fix" the dll hell.)
for all i care, eye candies are gimmicks. microsoft should concentrate on improving the OS design itself before spending time prettying it up - because how stupid will they look when their pretty OS gets deployed but a worm takes over in the first week, bringing longhorn to its knees?

I smell an extension of the same we have now in regards to OS supporting and promoting actions that seem tailored to those with attention deficit disorder. One of the reasons why I like my Macs is that it does not throw a plethora of ads, adware "Did you know"s, Clippy, etc. at me. If I want to do something, I invoke it - the machine doesn't try to think for me.

It was entertaining watching folks comment on a fake. I put the same theme on my HP 1.0GhZ laptop 6 months ago... just about slowed to a stop. I had to remove it pronto because just having a browser window redraw was agonizingly slow.
That said, MS DOES have an opportunity with the new OS, but remember, OSX has a lead on developing on them. By the time Longhorn makes it to a user's desktop, X will be XII, and no doubt very mature.
I hope.

Funnier: Posting a screen shot with a copy of a pirated movie on your desktop.
:)
I know this isn't the message board for Microsoft. But having to use Microsoft crap at work I hope Longhorm brings some cool new things. Not just eye candy, but god knows XP could use some jazzing up. They had some really cool things mentioned in an article I read, but I then read a later article saying they were pulling a lot out of the plan. So it appears to get it out the door sometime in the next descade they pulled most of the stuff that seemed revolutionary. (well revolutionary for windows anyway)
Oh well, when it's all said and done it will probably be a service pack for XP.
They want to go to managed code and everything, but are so afraid of breaking the thousands of programs for Windows. So they must lug around all the legacy crap under the hood going back to Windows 98... (maybe even 3.1)

hahah, by the time I realized I posted that, It was too late. (BTW, it was for my sister, shes 11 and loves that kind of junk, I'm more of a Kill Bill type of guy)
Turns out it was a hacked Windows XP with a Longhorn look. I'm really dissapointed in him, and pissed off too.
If Longhorn is half as good at Panther, I'll go buy a $400 computer and try it out. I don't know about most of you, but as much as I hate Micro$oft, I'd still really like to try Longhorn (If I live long enough to see it  ).

in all honesty, even disregarding what people purport to be the recommended specs for a computer to run the final release of Longhorn, it won't run well on a $400 computer. Well, maybe if you built it yourself it would, but if you just get a cheap POS from Dell, it'll be crap, probably.
As for me, I'll still be willing to try Longhorn, go to my local computer store at midnight to get my copy (look, i do that for both Windows and Mac OS so dont call me a windows lover), install it, try it, and then go back to using a Mac. Mind you, I'm really really exasperated at Windows XP right now, burning Gentoo install disks currently :)

But, it won't be released tomorrow, and when it is released, it won't have to compete with Panther, but with OS X 10.6 or 10.7. Plus, I doubt this is Longhorn (doesn't look like the recent screenshots). Looks like XP with an ok rip-off skin on it. Plus, even the latest Longhorn builds aren't stable at all. The latest one crashed at WinHEC during a major presentation showing how much better Longhorn was than XP :D

yes, if you readthis interesting thread, for the past two.5 pages every other person has been saying that the screenshots are of XP skinned to look like Longhorn, and the person who did it even admitted it to the person who started this thread ;)
And you also have to realize that Longhorn will not be released for another couple of years at the least. The alphas we see right now are going to be vastly improved, and probably will be no indicator of what the final version of Longhorn will be like. Microsoft could always add new features, making Longhorn compete with OS 10.6 without looking pathetic.

No no NO. Its a handle to make flinging the computer easier then ever when you get pissed at windows for losing its WIFI connection and unable to re-est a connection because XP's WIFI components are dicking with the OEM's, or slows down because your file explorer is frozen because you are browsing a network share that is having problems, or because SP X has crashed Windows, or because the xls/doc/ppt file you've spent the last 2 hours on has become corrupt and you have to start over again, or because.............well you get the drift. hahaha, I remember that now! It was a 25x25 or 50x50 pixel gif with a message that read: masturbation causes blindness. The image looked like it was horribly out of focus, it was hilarious! :D I decided not to use it as an avatar because it wasn't very appropriate.....
Good stuff. :)

Of course we all believe that!

It's an improvement, visually.. but it's still not as "clean" as OSX by a longshot.

No, the design is still too cluttered. Apple got where it was with simplicity, something which seems to elude MS no matter how hard they try.
And what's with EVERY generation of Windows still using that same crappy jagged-edged font? Every time I have to use a PC I end up longing for the beauty of the anti-aliased Lucida Grande on my Mac.

Well if this is real, I must say it does look better than XP. But I did notice some OS X stuff, as mentioned, like the "recycle bin" and the program buttons on the taskbar have that gel button look to them like OS X. It's "OK" I guess, but we're just going to have wait a million years until M$ finally releases it  But if anything, it is an improvement from the the XPee GUI, IMO. But the GUI is cluttered still, like that thing on the right, way too big and gets in the way.
EDIT: Ok, I just realized this thread was done back in May and had 3 pages already :D :o

And deemed fake?
i hope it crashes :) when they demo it
That happened once, when Bill Gates was showing off how well Win98 worked with a USB scanner. It BSOD on him! This was years ago (Win 98) but it was funny to see... oddly enough, the PC was still dumping the image to the projector that he was using, instead of just dying. Maybe the video card had a dual output? Anywhoo, go find it yourself.
Yeah I remember that. It was kind of funny to watch that it crashed while he was presenting the "plug and play". :D
