How can you have a data plan for the iPod touch?
Note, it does not have cell phone reception.
As for WiFi, any WiFi plan will work just like a laptop.

I guess I wasn't clear enough. So let me give it another go.
Cell phones allow data transmission over cellular networks.
Cell phones have data plans.
The iPod touch cannot receive or transmit over cellular networks, and thus cannot use a data plan.
So no matter how much you want your current iPod touch to have and use a data plan, it will not happen.
Now in the future, it is possible that an iPod touch would have cell data reception and transmission. Not likely but it is a possibility. Right now I doubt Apple would do this as it would cut into iPhone sales.

Did I ever said I want my iPod to work with data right now?
I'm just pondering on the idea, you're just talking too much now homie.
On the original post I even say "IT WOULD BE COOL"
I work here at AT&T so I know a thing or two about phones.

ya know.......its more feasible that ATT allows one to not have a voice plan with their iphone than it is to have the touch get a data plan

You know, that's just what I was thinking. And an iPhone without voice is still better than an iPod touch, because it has the GPS and camera.

They could do WiMAX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX)......... I don't think those chips are too much larger than normal wifi chips. Thus you could have a data plan AND higher storage capacity.

Well, to be fair to the OP (despite his/her attitude), I think what he's talking about is a touch-like netbook-type device ... eg an iPod Touch with an EVDO connection but no cellphone radio. Like what the Kindle has.
A generation or two down the line, we'll likely have (an attempt at) ubiquitous wireless connection in iPods.

If Apple turned the iPod Touch into something resembling a kindle in terms of having a free/cheap cell data connection (NOT the ebook portion) then I think Apple would have a definite winner. Kinda funny since I've been saying the iPod Touch needs a data connection forever it seems like now.
Heck either you paid more for the device but didn't have a monthly fee (certain restrictions on GB/month would apply) or pay something like $10 a month (again with a small GB cap) or opt for $30 for "unlimited".

Oh, I can so see Apple going this route but only allowing unlimited access to the store nothing else.
The sales in the app store and itunes store would go through the roof if the touch had something similar to whispernet

That could cost too much.
What about having a sim slot that could only be use for (AT&T)Data and charge a monthly fee.
I don't use my phone too much, but I enjoy going on the internet...

I have a small cheap phone I pay $40.0 for unlimited talk with Tmobile (Never had a problem with them)... Go check AT&T plans, do some calculation and get back to me...
Let me give you a head start, unlimited everything at AT&T is $150.0

if you had an adpater of some sort that plugs into the dock connector, i wonder if you could get data plans from other companies
for instance, verizon could make thier own, att could, etc
would be nice for data on the go
im starting to agree with the op and if you wanted, pay 30 a month for just data. some people already have a phone and dont need an iphone really and be forced to pay for minutes
also with this adapeter idea, one wouldnt need to worry about etf's or what not as the adapter is seperate from the ipod touch so we wouldnt have the near amount of complaining whenever new hardware comes out
i agree, this would be kind of nice

Yeah, I thought about that too. I doubt that a company would make one though since only the touch will have access to it and there aren't that many out there to warrant the cost in making something like that.
It's more likely we will see more carriers with mifi.
Another thought is adding an attachment with either a usb slot or express slot for the iPod Touch.
There is also this by cradlepoint I have been eyeing
http://www.cradlepoint.com/files/imagecache/product_image_default/files/product_details_images/CBA250-Angle.jpg
http://www.cradlepoint.com/products/cba250-cellular-broadband-adapter
You insert your card or usb in it then use it as a hot spot. Would be great for in car use.

here is the ideal solution
provide the iphone at ipod touch prices
do not make any part of the service mandatory...aka you dont sign a contract and if you do, you can opt out of voice or data or whatnot
sadly this will never happen

Get a job, buy an iPhone or a MiFi and quit your bitching. Apple isn't going to cannibalize there other products sales because you want 3G. You people are frustratingly relentless. Go look at the other threads for reasons why not as I'm tired of typing it up and there's more informed people with good reasons why it's not happening.

I love this thread.
What about we take this a stage further? I'd like to see an iPod touch with a couple of extra buttons.
First, I'd like a button that allows one to 'beam' oneself to other locations. This could work well with Google maps: simply key in a street address and press the button and you get 'beamed' to that location. It would work in the same way that this technique worked in the celebrated 'Star Trek' series. Sure, the technology is not quite there yet, but there's no disputing that Apple could get it to work at some point in the future. I'm sure that AT&T would offer a suitable data plan for Touch users.
Also, I'd like to see a special 'homie' button on the touch. With a little research Apple could invent a small laser beam that could detect a person's 'hominess'. One would then simply have to press a button to reveal all.
These are exciting times. I love this thread.

Possibly.
One big difference between the iPhone and iPod touch is the space reserved for memory. The iPhone has one slot and the iPod touch has two slots. That is why the touch has twice the memory as the iPhone. Which on a side note is why we'll more than likely see a new touch introduced with 64GB of memory since the iPhone is now at 32GB.
Due to the space issues, the touch would need to give up one of the memory slots to have a built in cell Transmitter/Receiver in order to use a data plan. I don't see Apple making this compromise.
Buy a MiFi from Verizon. There's your data.
Exactly.
RunOverProducti could easily get one of these to solve his needs.
I also like the idea of a MiFi type device attached to the dock. Could build it into an attachable battery case.
Having said that, the current MiFi by Verizon is pretty darn cool.

There is still a possibility (Albeit, very small) that there will be another iPod in the making for selling.
