I currently have an unlocked 2G iPhone running on 2.2.1. are there any special steps i need to take to unlock using PwnageTool 3.0, or can i just go ahead and boot the application up and unlock away?

The easy way on a 2G is to:
1. Backup the phone, put it into DFU mode and do a clean 3.0 install on iTunes
2. Run RedSn0w
3. Restore your contacts etc with iTunes
