Bloomberg has received confirmation (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aSy0WezEGvvY) from Apple that Steve Jobs has returned to work at Apple following his liver transplant, currently working part-time at the company's headquarters in Cupertino and part-time from home. Jobs reportedly (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/06/22/steve-jobs-back-at-work-at-apple/) returned to work last Monday, but today's report is the first confirmation directly from Apple.Steve Jobs is back at work at Apple Inc., returning to his job as chief executive officer as planned after taking medical leave in January.
"Steve is back to work," Steve Dowling, an Apple spokesman, said today. Jobs is at Apple a few days a week and working at home the remaining days, he said. "We are very glad to have him back," Dowling said.Jobs announced (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/01/14/steve-jobs-taking-medical-leave-of-absence-until-june/) in mid-January that he would be taking a medical leave of absence until the end of June, and today's report confirms that he has met his target.

When Apple say something is happening in a certain month, it always happens at the end though - so Jobs was just staying true to that.

Excellent news, although I expect we'll see in the coming months that Tim Cook will take over as CEO and Jobs will probably become chairman or something along the lines of being involved in development and strategy of new products. A reduced role for him makes sense seeing as the company did very well without him the last six months.

Who peed in all you guys' wheeties?
Well, it's likely true. I'm really glad he's back at work, it'll be very therapeutic for him. There's nothing worse than staying home from work due to a long-term illness. But, in reality, he's finished with his former role. There will be no more Steve-notes and no more 15 hour days. Sure, the liver transplant definitely saved his life, but it just exchanged a terminal disease for a more manageable, chronic disease.

When do you think he will show his face to the public?
I think he will wait until he gains his weight back and looks healthy before he makes any public appearance. He wants to put this health difficulties behind him, but more importantly to put the news reports to rest.
Also, as others mentioned I would not be surprised for Tim Cook to take over day to day operations - but not for a year or so. Why? cause it would again bring up health issues to close to his recent return to work.

Ah here it is... a little googling was all I needed.
http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/report_steve_jobs_on_track_to_return_to_apple_end_of_june/

You don't have any idea what his medical condition will or won't allow him to do. The idea that a guy who's had a liver transplant can't give 90 minute keynote speeches anymore is baffling to say the least.

Good on ya, mate! Glad to hear you're back in the flesh.
Gotta be thankful for whoever supplied his replacement liver. I'm not up on transplants, but I'm sure it was someone's death that gave Jobs a new chance at life. Pray for that person and their family, too.
On a lighter note, I can just imagine Steve Ballmer now, choking the life out of his hired voodoo doctor...

Now that we all know he actually had a liver transplant I wished he would have taken more time off.
If I was him i would take an additional 3 months off to be on the safe side. Hopefully, his work "schedule" is just for show and that he is REALLY taking it part time.
Regardless though, now that he is back I would hope now more progress (or really more rumor leaks are made) on the iTablet/MacTouch can be made. Hopefully it will launch this year.

Yes, it goes without saying that "if he has cancer then he has cancer," but I haven't seen a news release saying that he has cancer. The reason given for the transplant was "liver disease."
And yeah, if cancer metastasized to his (now former) liver, then a liver transplant ain't gonna do much good.

Once cancer hits the pancreas it's very, very bad news. It's a highly vascularized part of the body that allows tumors to move throughout the body with ease...

ZDNet that is
in various articles they are in a feeding frenzy discussion about SJ faking it, pushing to the head of the Liver waiting lists because he's a big honcho,
LYING about being ill, getting undeserved handicapped perks about coming back period
I mean WTF!?
They dangle such choice articles such as "APPLE makes $300-$500 off each iPhone!" then gloat over the "greed"
F*kkin' animals- both the writers and the talkbackers
My grandfather had pancreatic cancer it took him quick
it is a miracle Steve is alive at all
Would not surprise me a bit if MSNZD had a celebration party waiting when he eventually passes
These are some seriously disturbed animals
One of their writers posted, in a rather arrogantly written article that: "I disdain arrogance-I will never buy a Mac"
note that performance takes back seat to his 'feelings'
well, if stupidity suits him better-he should go for it.
They are all clueless baby boomers who worship MS over at that pig sty
This is not MS vs APPLE
This is about animals gloating making inuendos about a man-who was near death and how easily they can learn a keyboard and be guaranteed a writing position at ZDNet

+1 +1 +1 +1 on Steve's return - for him, his family, his friends and Apple.
On Tim Cook - I'm not confident that we have seen the final act. All of Apple's releases over the period Tim has been in his current role evolved with Steve's vision / direction / involvement. The really DIFFERENTIATING role for Apple is not - IMO - manufacturing or quality prowess but design and functionality. Apple's continuing financial performance and stock recovery is primarily a function of the successful product trajectory that has been underway for some time now.
Tim's role in that trajectory - who knows.

Apple will be smart to keep Steve with a limited role, I think if they put him back in the spotlight it will be harder for Tim Cook or someone else to run the company later. People love Steve and he has done great things for the company but Steve won't be able to run the company forever. I don't think he will hand things over too quickly and he will likely be a part of the company until his death.

Jobs reportedly (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/06/22/steve-jobs-back-at-work-at-apple/) returned to work last Monday, but today's report is the first confirmation directly from Apple.Jobs announced (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/01/14/steve-jobs-taking-medical-leave-of-absence-until-june/) in mid-January that he would be taking a medical leave of absence until the end of June, and today's report confirms that he has met his target.

Excellent news, although I expect we'll see in the coming months that Tim Cook will take over as CEO and Jobs will probably become chairman or something along the lines of being involved in development and strategy of new products. A reduced role for him makes sense seeing as the company did very well without him the last six months.
I agree that a reduced role would make sense.
However the performance of Apple during the past six months was not only created during his abscence. The seeds for the excellent performance in the past 6 months have been planted months, maybe years before Steve left. A company like Apple could probably cruise on for 6 months without a CEO and still do fine.
Whether the management of Apple was successful during steve's abscence will become clear within the next year. I think it is to early to judge.
Awesome, no more ridiculous products like the latest iPod shuffle!
You obviously don't know anything about how long it takes for a product to go to market. Do you really think this was all done during those few months that Steve was absent?
Just glad he is back. Really.

Hey, no one is forcing you. I just wish Apple gives me that option.
Black keys look amazing on MBP's!
Ok imo, they look terrible, but everyone has opinions...:p

Try to get into the city more often, and look at Apple's stock during Steve's absence. You did well if you purchased in Jan after the "letter of Wine."
He is not a diety, and is neither Red nor White. :apple:
Sorry, you missed the sarcasm. I'm a long time Apple stock holder, and I get into the Twin Cities all the time.:D

Now ... about Tim Cook ... don't know much about him, but am chagrined at what I was able to see ... that he worked for Compaq for a while.
Well, that's what I was thinking when I found out that co-creator and head writer of LOST, Damon Lindelof, used to write for Nash Bridges. People gotta start somewhere :)
As far as The Return of the Jedi goes, I am very, very happy, for my own selfish reasons, that Steve is back at Apple. Hopefully, we'll see more attention paid to the pro apps, though it could be argued that the neglect was there before he went on leave.
How can anyone rate this as a negative??

OK boys and girls, first order of business is to remove all those "ugly" spaces between the iPhone "G3 S". Then take liverwurst off the cafeteria menu.
Now, what's this I hear about hot, pink iPhones and throttled down MacBook Pros?!?
It seems I can't leave you kids alone for a few months.
Yes, Steve, you've been missed.

It's somewhat funny, in this day and age, that Steve Jobs is considered 'back to work' only when he physically comes to his Apple office.

So it's been nearly a month since Steve Jobs returned to Apple, yet Tim Cook is still CEO?
I remember seeing Cook mentioned as "provisional CEO" while Steve Jobs was on leave, but now he's being referred to simply as "Apple's CEO, Tim Cook".
Will Steve maintain a smaller role in the company or do we expect him to return to being CEO?

Either way, the company seems to be in good hands. As long as Jobs remains a contributer I don't see why Apple has anything to fear.
