View Full Version : How to hide files

In Windows XP, there is an option to make the files hidden. you won't see the files unless you select 'show all files' and unless you know which folder the files are.
But is there such option in Mac OS too?

AFAIK you can't do this in Finder, but you can using the Terminal. Open Applications/Utilities/Terminal, and then type in the following:

cd [directory location]
mv -i [filename] .[filename]

Eg if you had a file located at /Folder/File.txt, you would type:

cd /Folder
mv -i File.txt .File.txt

The cd command sets "Folder" to the current directory, and the mv command renames the file. It simply puts a "." at the start of the filename, which makes it invisible in Mac OS X. Making files visible is almost the same:

cd [directory location]
mv -i .[filename] [filename]

eg

cd /Folder
mv -i .File.txt File.txt

This removes the "." from the start of the filename.

A few things to note though: Firstly, if a folder or file name has a character such as a space in it, you must type a "\" before that character. Eg you'd type in "Picture\ 2.pdf" instead of "Picture 2.pdf". Secondly, you can make things easier by dragging files/folders on to the Terminal window, which will automatically enter the file/folder location for you (eg type "cd ", and then drag a folder on to the Terminal window). You can also use the tab key to automatically complete file/folder names.

There is also a hidden option in Finder that lets of see all hidden files. To turn it on type:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1

For the change to take effect, you need to relaunch Finder. You can do this in the Terminal by typing "killall Finder", or alternatively by relaunching Finder in the force quit dialog.

To turn the option off type the following before relaunching Finder:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0

One thing i forget to ask, for eg. if i hide a text file in terminal, even if i know the name and location of the file, but there is absolutely no way i can open this file unless i go to terminal and make it visible again right?

Assuming i forget the name of this file, will i be able to locate it again in terminal?

When you do a search in Finder you can specify for it to search invisible files, as well as other criteria. Then in the results window, you can double click files, or control/right click them to open with a chosen application.

In Terminal, you can use the "-a" flag of the ls command to see invisible files. Eg type "cd /Applications" to go to your Applications folder, then "ls -a" to view a list of all files (visible and invisible). You can open the files with the open command, eg "open /Folder/File.txt"

Or you can turn on the option in Finder to display invisible files (see my last message).

Or you can use Apimac's Secret Folder (http://www.apimac.com/sf/index.html)
which seems to be a more secure solution.

I love how obvious it is when people are trying to hide porn on their machines. They're the same type of people who innocently ask how to rip off copy protection from DVDs, CDs, etc. because "they only want to make a legitimate back-up copy of a disc they legally purchased".

When you work in an environment with a lot of people nearby, you will find the need for hidding files such as password files, personal account and tax files, and even project files.

There isn't much need to hide porn anyway. It is perfectly normal and I bet almost every single machine out there has some sort of porn materials. Be it picture or movie. Hey, may be even sexy photo of you and your gf is for your eyes only! :p
Hope the moderator doesn't punish me for saying this.

I tested this command in Terminal. Like you said, it shows all hidden files. That explains why my desktop suddenly has my user folder, Network, .Ds_store and .localized

I entered 'defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0, it merely hide the invisible files again, but I can still do a search in Finder for invisible files.
Is there option in the Finder to turn off the option to display or search invisible files?

I am getting to like Mac OS in certain ways, because you need to know how to use the terminal and the commands to activate certain features. :-)

her jpg and mpg files, i was not born a guy, although i am bi :)
and if you think that the pic on my profile (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?u=13551) makes me look like a guy, i'm in deep deep trouble ;)

With encrypted disk images, you need a password to mount it, but once its mounted, its fully searchable and behaves like an ordinary disk image, except for the fact that you need a password to mount it in the first place...
unmounted, it is virtually unopenable without the password (or rather, passphrase) and nobody will know what's in there :)
That's why you could always make the disk image like 4gb and call it like "FC2-i386-DVD.iso" (fedora core 2 install dvd image ;) ) to make people think its not porn, but instead its a linux install disk image. Major fun :) Mind you, if you do that, the file will basically be called FC2-i386-DVD.iso.dmg, but you could always make Finder not show file extensions. So it has the .dmg, but appears to be a .iso.

Your beliefs are your beliefs, but an addiction to porn and a disapproving significant other is the reason why its a problem. If your significant other approves of you watching porn, there is no problem.

nice one. :D i'll keep that one handy...

yeah, making files hidden within Terminal is good... but then you've either got to use Terminal to open the files, or use 'Go To...' in Finder (shift+cmd+g). beware that if you use 'Go to...' then type the path to your hidden folder, the next time that someone uses 'go to...' they will be able to see that path that you previously typed. just remember that ;)

i also have a couple of encrypted disk images... very handy.

Hakkinen, if you want to make a encrypted disk image, just open up Disk Utility then make a new one there. you'll sort it out easily enough. and if the dmg isn't mounted, then no one will be able to see what's in there. :D just make sure you use a password that you'll remember.

I open Disk Utility and the only option is repair permissions. While there is Unmount and Eject, I can't click on them. Does that mean they are already encrypted? As I understand, this will only prevent someone from opening my file if he/she copies my file out of my machine. But it doesn't hide my file right? Correct me if I am wrong.

BTW, my significant other has not objection to watching porn. In fact, she sends me attachments all the time. :-)

May 31, 2004, 06:49 AM
Okay, to get yourself a new disk image, just open Disk Utility, but don't worry about any of the partitions that are already listed in the sidebar on the left. just go to the icon at the top between 'Burn' and 'Unmount'. that should be 'New Image' in there. :D or you can go to the menu and go Images>New>your choice.

then you can specify the size of the dmg, and what you want the password to be. :) hope that helps you with that. you might have to try a few times to get the dmg settings right, but it's good once you do.

as for hiding the files... yeah, people can still see the dmg's, so if you really want to hide then, use an encrypted dmg, then use the Terminal technique to rename the dmg to something like .systemfile.dmg or something, but still be carefull with the name, people can still search for it.

You're right, password protected disk images are probably the best way currently of keeping any files from prying eyes; especially if you don't use the same password as on your account. That way, whether someone manages to acquire your password, or uses your machine while you're away, they're out of luck.

Hiding files on a computer accomplishes nothing really. They are "findable", so what's the point. If FileVault is fixed (not sure if it is yet) that would be an answer. As for playing terminal, I use Macs for their power, convenience and ease-of-use. Terminal is for folks with WAY too much time on their hands. Contrary, I'm a busy guy. I don't have time to dick around with that black window making things invisible and such. That being said I do on occasion use SSH to change permissions on one of my remote servers, but that's it.
Personally I use a firewire drive and .Mac. for some critical files.

You were born 1990 and you hit puberty a few years back? Meaning you're still right in the middle of it? Because either you're a new breed of men or I am getting really old, but in my days you were right in the middle of puberty when you were 14... at least I was. :D
And just to clarify this: Your voice having changed is just a VERY small portion of puberty and if you haven't figured this out you're probably still a few years away from hitting it at all. ;)
And for the porn issue... that is YOUR truth. If you don't feel like watching it, don't. But don't try to convince us that it is common knowledge. You'll learn when you are older that pretty few things are actually facts and most things are opinions. ;)

AppleScript.
You already have on your system a set of scripts to do these sort of things. Library>Scripts. Believe me, if you're not using AppleScript, you're not using your Mac.

Install the Script menu and then you have it always available in your menu bar.

Adjust the scripts, and you have an instant way of removing underscores and properly renaming all those 'files' you download.

Now I'm old AND useless!

Only kiddin'! The best thing about the young, is they haven't been around enough to know the best comebacks like that one! :D

Speaking of which... F1 fan? ;)

Ooh, haven't posted in a while, fun fun fun.

That's right, I haven't seen you around much lately. But when I received my e-mail notification that this thread had been updated, and that you were the one who had posted a reply, I rubbed my hands together in anticipation because I just knew you'd have something enlightening to say about the little kid's comments. :)

Lets see, I can't get married, I am gay and I don't have a girlfriend. That must make me a porn addict!

Yep, it would appear so - don't question the mighty 14-year old, he knows everything! Oh, and because you are a porn addict as a result, you must also be evil, because it's not right to watch porn...

ohhh, just give the kid a break, all kids talk about things they don't understand,
basically:
He does not watch porn because he does not like it - fine
(assuming) most people here watch porn because they *enjoy* it - that's fine too

He's just being a kid by expressing his opnions and reasons on things, one of the steps to adulthood.

(im going to get bashed for this)

Yah yah, I know, just having fun. After all, it’s the only way he’ll learn – we’re doing him a favor! ;) He’ll learn the differences between fact and opinion eventually...

I don’t know about the others, but I for one won’t bash you – you’re simply making logical, sensible, mature statements which I have no problem with in the least. It’s actually a perfect contrast to the kid’s statements...

Well, for some people, this is the *exact* reason more people don't join the forums. Crap like this was the reason I am no longer a member of ipodlounge.com. And crap like this is the reason I hate high school. Honestly, the kid wants to hide his file (*cough*) and you give him grief. (I'm not saying this explicitly to Shard)

Ah, high school, that takes me back... ;) How is this "crap" exactly? As I said, we’re just having fun here, no need for anyone to take things seriously and get their panties in a knot. In actuality, most of the comments here have still been valid and fair, with people stating their opinions, and the kid brought them on himself in the first place. I will concede one point though, and that is I suppose we should technically get back on the topic of hiding files. ;)

Honestly, the kid wants to hide his file (*cough*) and you give him grief. (I'm not saying this explicitly to Shard)

Actually, the kid we were addressing in all of these posts didn’t even start the thread, nor say anything about hiding files. He in fact just submitted one post! Hakkinen actually started the thread, and we poked some fun at him (the initial porn references) and he took it all in full swing and had a good laugh about everything, so I don’t know why other people can’t handle a little bit of friendly cajoling.

Thanks

I can’t tell if you were being sarcastic or not in saying this, but my comments were still sincere regardless.

I have a boyfriend, ave been with him since january 2003, i'm bi, and i'm not exactly a porn addict...
Jane honey, next time we meet, send over that disc image, I'll make it worth your while....
ooooh cant wait :D :D
you gonna be home around wwdc? and will you get your ass back into #macrumors, MacCoaster is back and he misses you :)

I have deleted all the porn off of my machine because porn is evil and corrupts society. I dont use applications like Diiva. And i wont download folderGuard so i can safely start a new porn collection.
porn is not evil and does not corrupt society. well anything sex related sure isnt, because it helps everyone out. Prostitution is one of the oldest jobs ever. The porn industry makes a lotta money, and that means people who need money can get some money so they can live.
Whats wrong with people trying to make a living?
And what does Diiva have to do with this...For crying out loud, its not like everyone on earth with Diiva go to alt.binaries.those.newsgroups.with.nude.pics.of.people :p
Anyone can start a porn collection...takes one picture to start it. Honestly.

Miss him - and especially his press conferences! (Not sure about the Mika Hakkinen song - to the tune of "Where's my Momma gone"!)

F1 is pretty dull these days - even as a died-in-the-wool F1 fan, I'm struggling.

Love every single part of it when he was racing. The breath-taking 0.0010 seconds difference in qualifying. Only with him around we see those results between the drivers.
I had the Mika Hakkinen song too. No more watching F1 nowadays. Only read them on newspaper. How great if he is still around. But would be bad for him, Mclaren can't perform no more.

I haven't watched F1 since the good old days of Alain Prost and Aryton Senna - now THAT was a team... amazing drivers...

I started watching F1 in March 1999, it was one fine night when I tuned in to the TV and saw F1, first time in my life. There were 2 cars leading the race. Black cars. Mercedes. I have always like Mercedes. Then the commentor mentioned the leader of the race is 1998 World Champion Mika Hakkinen. Mercedes + Mika Hakkinen = I am hooked.

You read übergeek's thread? That is even more AWESOME!!!

Start a thread which will result in off-topic discussions, debates, and an overall pointless discussion? Hmm, sounds like fun, I think I'll give that some thought, find an appropriate topic, and submit a new thread! I'll let you know when I do... ;)

Hmm...how about how many hours you spend on the net, what do you think of file sharing, do you hide your porn stuff in your mac, how many of you find internet a waste of time to find love, what would you do if you are CEO of microsoft or apple, etc....

Those are all pretty good. Don't worry, I'll come up with something!

This may be off-topic from the current discussion -- though not from the original discussion -- but another way to change the visibility of files is with the veritable ResEdit-Get-Info replacement SetFile.

If you have the developer tools installed, open up terminal and type /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a V <file> to make a file invisible and /Developer/Tools/SetFile -a v <file> to make a file invisible (only in the finder). You'll have to relaunch the Finder as previously mentioned for it to take effect.

SetFile lets you do a whole lot of interesting Finder tomfoolery; type man SetFile to see what else it can do.

But, it still doesn't solve the searching problem. One possible, though insecure, solution is to put everything inside of a folder and disallow everyone, including yourself, permission to the contents of said folder. Do this either in the Finder with Get Info: Permissions or in the terminal with chmod -R 000 <folder>. When you want to look at the contents, then do chmod -R 700 <folder>. If someone knows the folder is there, that solution won't stop them from going inside if he/she knows how to change the permissions.

So, if people are looking specifically for your hidden materials, well, do the encrypted disk image as previously mentioned. Or, better yet, have personal user accounts for each person and a trusted BOFH with the root password. That's the UNIX® way (as is the original .<filename> solution intended for one's own aesthetic convenience -- others shouldn't have access to your files in the first place).

Thanks for your contribution, Capn_Moho!
Though I think my ibook does not come with Developer tools installed.
