View Full Version : How many lenses do you own?

gnd

I'm just being curious here. I'd like to see what is the average number of lenses that the users of this forum own.
Do you only have the kit lens, the two kit lenses, more? How many more?
Doesn't matter how many lenses you use but how many you own.

After my third lens purchase I told the missus, "these are all the lenses I will ever need"...

I checked the 7-9 category.:p;):D

I've got a kit lens (18-55) for walkaround, low-light prime (nifty fifty), and a telephoto (70-200 f/4L). Looking to replace the 18-55 with the Tamron 17-50, but that may be on hold since I'm looking around for a new body. Maybe further down the line I'll consider buying the EF-S 60mm macro. I don't use the nifty fifty enough to justify the purchase of a 50mm f/1.4, but the USM focusing would be nice.

In the short term (and probably longer term) I'm looking at more upgrading and replacing lenses than just adding new ones. :)

Got the Nikon 18-135mm kit lens to use with my D80 when I first bought it, then added these used lenses (to try and cover all my bases): Nikkor 70-300mm DX AF-S for wildlife, Nikkor 1.4f 50mm AF-D for indoor flashless stuff, Nikkor 24 mm 2.8f AF-D for a landscape prime, Tamron 90mm Di Macro lens, bought the Sigma 10-20mm DX ultrawide zoom new. Pretty happy with all of these purchases, and the only thing I'd really change if I had that kind of scratch would be VR lenses or the Nikkor f2.8 24-70.

Right now, three, looking to get a fourth. I have the 18-55 kit lens (Canon gear), Canon 100mm macro lens and a Sigma 50mm f1.4. I'm looking forward to getting the new Sigma 10-20 f3.5 after the reviews come out. I need an UWA for an upcoming trip :)

Revising:

5 ... current dSLR (and 'recent' 35mm film; Canon EF mount)
3 ... current UW film camera (Nikon Nikonos)
2 ... old Pentax "K" that I haven't used in several years.

I have two currently - the kit lens and a brand new Canon 35mm f/1.4L (my first real lens - photography is a blast with this type of flexibility)

I am not sure the kit lens will ever make its way back on the camera lol. The 35mm is just such an excellent lens. My plan is to also get some flavor of the 70-200 L, and down the line, a full frame camera.

70-200 in that set up would do portraits and telephoto pretty nicely. The 35mm on a full frame would probably become my wide angle/general lens. Not sure how good of a "standard" lens this 35mm would be on full frame though?

Does anyone else use a 35mm on a full frame, both as a wide AND general lens? My goal would be to use it for full body shots, group shots indoors, landscapes, etc, and the 70-200 would do head shots, far off subjects, etc. That seems good, just not sure if for example I was doing a full body shot with a person filling the frame, if 35mm would be distorted at all on, say a 5D?

there is someone who uses every focal length between 8mm and 1200. what matters is do you like it.

i don't get along with 85mm. i don't care how amazing a lens is, if it's 85mm, i have no use for it. stick it on an APS-C camera, and i think it's fine. you might feel the same about 35mm, or you might not.

technically, all focal lengths work, it just depends on what effect and/or working distance you're looking for.

35mm is acceptable for full-body and environmental, though i think it's on the short side for full-body.

just ordered my 3rd off amazon yesterday (along with a new camera body - upgrading my xti to a t1i :) )

adding a sigma 30mm 1.4
have a 50mm 1.8 and the 17-55 IS kit lens.

I pretty much only shoot in low light.
the 50mm came with the camera (bought it off a friend). the 50 can be a little tight on a cropped camera when trying to shoot party or bar pics. I think the 30mm will be a better fit and better focusing in low light, plus the 1.4 is a nice little bump over the 1.8.

i'll keep the 50mm because it's so light, and might be better in some instances.

Really. Better than 80 percent of respondents own more than two lenses.

I truly thought I would be done at two lenses, the Leica 14-50mm and an Olympus 70-300; with 2x mag. for the 4/3 sensor that's from 28mm to 600mm covered... who could need more? Some old film SLR that I could not even tell if I was zooming or focusing until I looked through the viewfinder, 100% manual lens

Other: PowerShot a1000 IS (my only IS lens), some old olympus PnS, A video camera, a "Disposable (quality wise)" video camera, Dad's Phone (Mom's does not have a camera OR MMS), A few pinholes that naturally occur, That's all I can think of.

Tokina 12-24 f/4.0 (original screw drive) - really sharp, a bit flare prone. Real nice at both ends of range, unexpectedly useful at 24mm on a D50. Works on full-frame body from 16-24mm.
Nikkor 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 kit (I'll probably keep for when I want to travel light, sharp, but slow)
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 AF (excellent portrait lens on crop-sensor, normal on DX)
Nikkor 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 (probably keep for some travel use, sharp, but slow)
Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8 AF-ED (two-ring version) - actually much faster AF on a D50 than I had expected. Excellent glass, heavy.
Nikkor 300 f/4.0 AF-ED (older, non-AF-S version) - built like a tank, rivals the f/2.8 version in IQ.

Six for now... probably heading up to 8-9. Still looking to fill a hole or two, looking at adding a D700 body down the line, and also upgrading my D50 to another DX body, most likely a D90 as a second body (mainly for the added reach for wildlife photography.) Additional lenses will have to work on both DX and FX. Most likely candidates are a macro 100mm type, and a fast, wide prime (20, 24 or 30mm) and a 1.4x or 1.7x TC for the long glass. I'm definitely on a tight budget so I seriously look for excellent/mint used gear.

6 if you count a TC.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
Canon EF 70-200 F4L IS
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Sigma 150mm f/2.8 Macro EX DG HSM
Sigma 1.4 EX DG APO Auto Focus TC.

Bought a 5D MK II so I have to update my lenses:

Canon EF 17-40 F4L
Canon EF 85 F1.8
Canon EF 24-105 F4L IS
Canon EF 70-200 F4L IS
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Sigma 150mm f/2.8 Macro EX DG HSM
Sigma 1.4 EX DG APO Auto Focus TC.

Now its seven! Where will it end......

Wow, I guess there *is* another way of seeing things. I myself would never buy that kit! Opinions do vary, obviously...

Closest to my preference would be that 70-200 which I also have as f/2.8 IS variant. That also almost covers the 85 f/1.8 and 100-400 IS if I borrow an extender for the longer reach. Also, I'm planning to buy 16-35 f/2.8 eventually so that's rather close to the 17-40 but why on earth would you want to have 24-105 f/4 if you already have plenty of lenses covering that focal length range?

Beats me, but to repeat myself opinions do vary. I just don't get it.

Okay, let's post my minimal dream setup since I might otherwise seem like a flaming troll which I'm not :)

16-35 f/2.8L
50 f/1.2L
135 f/2.0L
70-200 f/2.8L IS

I currently have 1 of 4, with poor man's 50L wannabe with the 30 f/1.4 Sigma (I'm on a 40D). My next purchase most likely will be the 16-35 mark1, but I won't rest until I have that 135 baby as well :) and once I go full frame, I'm going to have to buy that 50L too.

Why?

50mm focal length equivalent is perfect walkaround lens. Now that I have crop body, the Sigma 30mm is perfect for it. Just as 50L will be even more perfect for a full frame body :) And while on the road, the 16-35 and 135 combo is perfect space-saver while being top performer as well. Obviously I'm using that white beauty for action, concerts and portraits - aka special occasions.

I noticed that too. Wonder why?

Anyway, I have two lenses that I count as my current crop. I have the 17-40L and the 70-200L. I am also looking to get the 24-70L to go in the middle.

Oh and I have a 1.4 TC that I use with the 70-200. Oh and all Canon.

AND a 24-105

Please note that I'm planning to buy 16-35 f/2.8 so if I have that AND the 70-200 I'm pretty much covered. All the better if I also have that 50L and TC in the pocket, but even with those two I would never miss the slow 24-105.

In fact, I don't miss any lens slower than f/2.8 because I've been spoiled with fast lenses :D

That's why my "dream setup" has the 50L for full frame (I currently have a Sigma 30mm for the 40D crop body, which will mostly become redundant once I get that 16-35L).

IMO having a 50mm prime is far superior to being able to zoom 30-70mm, but opinions do vary. Some people prefer having an "infinite" zoom range available at all times, I prefer having fast aperture. I have drawn the line at f/2.8 and will not consider anything slower. But maybe that's because I shoot indoors quite often, and can not always use flash.

Bearing in mind I only got my first DSLR (EOS 400D) at Christmas, I currently have two lenses; the 18-55mm kit lens and a 55-250mm that I bought last month (can't remember the f-stop values, sorry!).

Currently I'm sated, although I'm sure I'll encounter the need (and therefore, the desire) to photograph something just out of the reaches of my lenses, at which point I'll start hankering for a new one :)

Nikkor 70-300

16-85 is my walk around lens. although i use the 10-24 a lot, too. I have not used the 70-300 as much as I thought I would, but love it when needed.

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (non-VC)
Canon EF-s 55-250
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8

I currently still have my kit 18-55, but only until I get around to selling it since I have no use for it since I got the Tammy.

I also have 3 old primes with the M42 mount from an old Yashica slr that was given to me. While I have an adapter to use these on my T2i, I never really do.

I must have been on one of my breaks when this thread first came around. I think I have two more lenses and two more teleconverters than I did 2 years ago at this time. I guess if we are counting teleconverters I have 10.

Not surprising that 3 is the most common number, but reading through the responses it is not 3 zooms, wide-normal-tele but quite a bit of two zooms and a prime within the zoom range. I guess not surprising but interesting anyway.

24-85 f/2.8-4 AF-D
20?-80? f/5.6~ AF-G not sure exactly haven't used it in a couple years and isn't worth enough to sell, bought it in a pawn shop for ~$40

I love the Tamron. It has got to be one of the best values in lenses available. The sharpness, colors, and wide aperture are all amazing. The only two downsides are 1. Kind of noisy autofocus and 2. No image stabilization. The no IS is what scared me the most, but with the f/2.8 I haven't had any trouble so far. After getting the Tamron, I don't think I have mounted the 50 1.8 since.

His lens seems to be very highly recommended and after getting it I see why. The quality for the price is outstanding. I bought mine used off the POTN forums for $350 shipped, so about $100 off the new price, making it even more of a value.

My camera, the Nikon D700 FX, didn't come with a kit lens. :D

My current set-up is five lenses.

The three kings...

Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8
Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8
Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 for low light shooting
The Nikkor 105mm micro f/2.8 VRI for macro shots

I may pick up a teleconverter, but I would love to go beyond the 200mm range which gets really expensive.

4. Canon 50 f1.8 (no idea why I bought that)
5. Sigma 18-50 (currently lent to a friend)
6. Cosina 100mm f3.5 (found it in a box. great macro on it, but can be bought off ebay for £10)

I actually forgot how I voted when I made the thread, but it sure changed in the last few years. Since then I bought a few more, sold one I think and am "indefinitely" testing a few lenses from friends (who can't use their old film era lenses on their new digital cameras).

My lenses:
1. Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 - my main walk-around lens
2. Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 WR - weather resistant kit lens, for when the weather is bad
3. Zeiss 20mm f/4 - M42 prime lens, almost no distortion, but too much hassle to use so it lives at home
4. Pentax M 28mm f/2.8 - used it a lot before I got the Tamron, now it lives at home
5. Pentax A 35-105mm f/3.5 - same as the previous one, need to sell it
6. Pentax FA 50mm f/1.4 - when I need absolute sharpness and no distortion (mostly for museum work, with the in-body stabilization I can hand-hold this down to 1/8 of a second)
7. Pentax M 50mm f/1.7 - used it before I got the FA50
8. Vivitar Series 1 90mm f/2.5 Macro - the famous "Bokina" lens, sharpest lens in our family, made in 1979, designed by a guy who worked for NASA, my wife scored this perfect copy in a Craig's List deal among some other "junk", its qualities are legendary, always in my camera bag, gets used all the time, took some of my favorite photos with it
9. Pentax M 200mm f/4 - another great lens, very sharp wide open, although a bit low on contrast (but that can be fixed in PP), always in my camera bag, gets used all the time
10. Pentacon 300mm f/4 - a MF lens, effective focal length on FF 450mm, not the sharpest of the bunch but still sharp enough to be useful, moderate use on special occasions

Lenses I'm "testing":
11. Soligor 70-150mm f/3.5 C/D "One Touch" - K-mount, nothing special, need to give it back
12. Pentacon 500mm f/5.6 - another medium format lens with a M42 thread, weighs around 4kg, effective focal length on FF 750mm, haven't yet tested it properly ...

5. Pentax A 35-105mm f/3.5 - same as the previous one, need to sell it

I ended up buying one of those recently remembering your recommendation two years ago, sharp solid lens. I should have bought yours :p

My collection has changed a bit, here's an update:

Pentax - DA 16-45mm f/4.0 - Use it all the time now, always comes with me, great lens.
Pentax - DA 12-24mm f/4.0 - In pieces in my cupboard after an accident :( When I put it back together it will function as a 12mm prime which is something at least...
Pentax - DA 40mm f/2.8 pancake - Sharp wide open, great colour, contrast, super small.
Great when you want something small to take along - take the grip off the K20D and put this lens on. More convenient focal length than 50mm.
Pentax - A 35-105mm f/3.5 - Sharp, solid. After finding how much I use the 150mm, I got this. Compliments the DA 16-45.
Pentax - F 50mm f/1.4 - Hardly used now that I have the 40mm, 50mm is a bit to long and awkward for me. At f/5.6 I don't think you can get much sharper than this - you can crop to 100% and not notice.
Pentax - M 50mm f/1.4 - picked this up for a bargain of $10, never use it may sell this or the F 50mm.
Pentax - K 150mm f/4.0 - love this lens. Used it 50% of the time when in NZ, great for honing in on details on mountains. Quite small and lightweight, great for hiking with. Was very lucky and found in a shop for $30, absolute bargain. Probably worth 10x that.
Tamron - 28-75mm f/2.8 - Razor sharp wide open, not quite long enough nor quite wide enough for general use. Was my event lens before I got the 16-45mm, but still use it on occasion. Used to compliment the DA 12-24mm.
Sigma - 70-300mm - horrible lens, soft, uncontrasty lackluster colour.
M42 28mm - paperweight, obtained as freebie in bad shape.
M42 135mm - paperweight, obtained as freebie in bad shape.
Canon EF 400mm L f/5.6 - Fantastic lens, sharp at all apertures, great contrast colour, built like a tank. Limited application but does what it is intended for very well.

All of this except the 12-24mm was purchased used, which has led to me save quite a bit of $$$ :)

What do you shoot that requires the speed on the fast lenses? I have never understood people that have to have the fast glass......and then stop down to 5.6 or F/8 all the time.

All my lenses are f/2.8 or faster... Why? Because sometimes I need it. I shoot in churches @ f/2.8 ISO 1600 1/80 all the time. Sometimes I even shoot f/1.4 ISO 3200 f/100. It's just a nice option to have.

Even when it's time to shoot portraits or something else that will be @ f/4 and above, my two primes lenses (Sigma 50 f/1.4 + Tamron 60 f/2) are used when practical. Most primes are much sharper than any zoom could dream of. As an added bonus, most primes are also faster.

Lenses:
•Tokina 16-28 f/2.8
•Sigma 50mm f/1.4
•Tamron 60mm EF-S f/2 Macro (Use this on my full frame cam, I actually like the vignette combined with the mega-sharp center image)
•Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS

Had but sold:
-Canon 17-55 f/2.8IS
-Tokina 11-16 f/2/8
-Canon 10-22 EF-S

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS. A very portable, versatile, and sharp lens that I would never in a million years trade for a behemoth f/2.8 model. This lens goes everywhere with me because it's so compact and relatively light.

...Interesting I too have a 5dmkII

I have:
70 - 200 f4
The Sigma 50mm
the 24 -105

The next lens I am planning on buying was the 100mm 2.8 Macro and I think only 1 other person has mentioned that before now...

I like portraits and the 50mm is a bit too wide of Full frame, I ruled the 85mm out as i had one before and found it suprisingly poor (i did buy it 2nd hand of ebay tho!!)
So I was kind of stuck between the 100 2.8 macro, 100 2.0 or the 135. f2.
I'm going to go for the macro as it should be a good length for portraits and I think I will enjoy experimenting with macro photograhpy!

May I ask your views on portraits with the 100 macro vs the 70-200 f4??

For my EOS 7D:

Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM. It's fun to have such a wide angle lens although it can distort pretty badly at 10mm
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. Bought this when I bought my old 400D. Wish I'd bought the 17-55 f/2.8 IS instead
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM. Fantastic light way tele zoom
Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 L USM. I adore this lens for low-light/indoor use
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. Bought before I bought the 35mm. I realised it was too long for a lot of my usage so bought the 35mm
Lensbaby Series 2 (I think). Bought cheap for messing around with :p

For my Epson R-D1

Voigtländer 35mm Nokton Classic f/1.4. I bought this when I bought the body. An interesting lens in that it's modern yet has a very classic signature
Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron with Near-Focusing Range. This lens is simply amazing. Made in 1960 it produces absolutely gorgeous images, although the lack of contrast before correction is very obvious compared to modern lenses.

Robbie,

I know what you mean about low contrast. I was a bit surprised how low the contrast was when I was using my 1953 50/2 Summitar on my Leica M9. It was my father's lens and normally sits on what was his Leica IIF. He actually preferred his pre-war 50mm Summar, which he had coated in Holland after the war, as on Kodachrome, he thought that the Summitar was too high contrast. Either tastes have changed or Kodachrome was an incredibly high contrast film.

I also use my 1954 Zeiss Contax 50mm f1.5 Opton Sonnar with an Amadeo Muscelli Contax to Leica M focusing mount on my M bodies. This is a great lens, noticeably better in all ways than the Summitar but then it was over double the cost in 1954. A 1954 Contax IIA camera, like mine, with the Opton Sonnar cost $1,250 in 1954, which was enough to buy a mid range Chevrolet.

May I ask your views on portraits with the 100 macro vs the 70-200 f4??

For portraits I prefer the 100 macro, but both it and the 70-200 deliver great results. The 100mm is lighter, faster, less conspicuous, and has more effective stabilization. Those are all good qualities for a portrait lens. Of course the IS will be less useful if you're using a fast shutter speed, but that isn't always the case, especially if your subject is standing relatively still in low light (and using a tripod is not practical). For candid portraits it's better to have more reach, of course, so in those cases, the 70-200 is preferable.

I had the 100mm f/2 before I bought the 2.8L and really enjoyed that lens, but it had some nasty non-correctable chromatic aberration at f/2 that caused me to stop it down most of the time.

At any rate, if you want to have macro capabilities and also want to shoot portraits, you can't beat the versatility of the 100mm f/2.8L. It is a true 1:1 macro lens, is weather sealed, has very effective stabilization (for non-macro distances, at least), and is optically DELICIOUS! :)

Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 DG Macro (which frequently seems to need repairs)
Tamron adapt-all 28mm f/2.5 (not so great, but it was cheap!)
Canon 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS
Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro

Just got the 100mm Macro and am enjoying it. I think the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 will be my next lens. Ultimately I'd like to swap out the 55-250 for a 70-200 f/2.8 and get some mid-range primes.

Thanks its great to hear the the 100 f2.8 is exactly what i'm after...

I do still have a slight longing for the 135/ f2 ...been hearing great things about the bokeh on that..

I'm finding the 70 200 a bit to big for day to day use sometimes...I was at my childs sportsday today and I had my 70- 200 on and overheard someone saying my camera was over the top...

thanks again

Wow - older thread. Since I last posted in '09 my set up has changed slightly. I traded the rebel for a 5DII and added the 135L. So my current lenses are;

5D mkII - 35 f1.4L + 135 f2L.

Those two pretty much get it all done for me. I had the 70-200 2.8IS mk II for a couple weeks, but ended up returning it and getting the 135L. Similar IQ really, but the 135 is faster, and more often than not I can just walk closer with the prime vs zooming with the 70-200. Given the 135 was about half the price of the zoom, I swapped. Money being unlimited, it may have been a tougher call (the mkII 70-200 really is excellent plus it has IS) but I haven't really regretted it at all.

Next I want an ultra wide L prime - unfortunately they are extremely pricey. I could always go with the 16-35 f2.8L zoom to get my wide shots though at this point I like that I am all primes. I would only use the 16-35 at the wide end anyway, so the faster speed and compact size of a prime would be nice. We'll see what happens.

3+2. Sigma 120-400 on my XSi, Canon 100 mm 2.8 Macro, Tamron 28-75 2.8 - my day to day lens. The other two are not often used, they are the Canon 18-55 kit lens and a Tamron 28-300 (which I might sell).

Since my last post in this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=8518608&postcount=79), I've actually replaced my camera gear entirely. I felt I'd outgrown my old 400D, and now have this:

Canon EOS 60D

Canon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

Canon 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM

Canon 50mm f/1.8 II

I've also got my eye on a Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro, but having only just dropped the cash on the kit above I think I might have to wait a bit! All my old kit will be going on eBay in the not-too-distant future, which might help fund it.

Most of my decent photographs end up in the link in my sig, or on my Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/people/52318843@N00/).

Have the 18-55 kit and 50 1.8. I've been renting lately when needed, want to get a T3i to replace my XSi for the video. Next lens purchase will probably be the 17-55 2.8 - so versatile; and then the 70-200 4L.

Current lens used on my Canon T1i and their % usage (swagged):
1) 65% usage: Canon 15-85; ($650 USD)
>>Yea, not a constant f2.8, but a razor sharp lens and my daily walkaround, it's always on the T1i
Sharp @ 15mm and wide open, yet @ 85mm gives enough reach for when its on + some cropping.

2) 30% usage: Canon 70-200 L f2.8 IS II ($2.1k USD) plus TC's mkII 1.4x & 2x ($600 USD)
>>I love this lens, great for my kids indoor sports close ups. The TC's totally make this a versatile lens. 400mm @ f5.6, 280mm @ f4, can't beat that.
People get outta the way when using this with the lens hood on.

3) 5% usage: Canon f1.4 50 prime ($300 USD)
>>Low light lens, not used that much, its kinda a tight lens for indoor shots on a crop sensor

Yep - lens definitely cost more than the camera body.

Future desires - lens/camera body:
a) Some UWA lens.....most likely used as this will be a specality lens used for only certain stuff
b) Macro lens for close-up / controlled stuff...same I'll look used market
c) possible a f2 35 mm prime to replace the f1.4 50.
d) Camera Body 7DMk2.....or 5DMk3 (Summer 2012??)

Past lens since sold:
Kit 18-55 IS and kit 55-250 IS
>>These came with my T1i Oct-2009 purchased new, took many-many shots on them and great learning lens to see where you want to go with the hobby.
Or, these may be "enough" for some also....

fwiw, I've so stopped using "protective" filters of any kind, but I'd like to buy a ND filter for some long exposure shots

But with your lens hood on did they get outta the way when you were shooting? :D:D

I've found people love when I share picts of their kids with them (our kids on same team, I don't shoot images of kids I don't know), usually for soccer/etc I'll send a few to them via the weekly emails of the pratice/etc.

The perceptions of other's is managed by the environment it is perceived in. My base DSLR and 28-75mm lens was out of place at a barbecue. The same camera with a grip, tripod and 120-400mm lens is a poor man's rig out at the local wildlife refuge. Birders seem to be on the same level as sports photographers when it comes to gear.
