Why can't I play Audio CDs?

For some reason, on my G4 (450) I can not play audio cds. These are originals, not burned copies. I can load data and picture cds with no problem, but the audio comes up with an error. It tells me that this is unrecognizable by my computer (or something like that).

Any ideas why this would happen?

what program are you using to try to play the CD's (ie iTunes)?
i'd take a look at itunes see if any settings are messed up probably won't find anything so then go ahead and reinstall itunes

I don't think it is iTunes that is messed up, because I can't even get a cd icon to show up on my desktop when I insert an audio cd.
