Probably the MPEG-2 component.

Get VLC, it should work.

Is there any way to get avi, mkv, etc. files to play smoothly? They look blocky on the mac to the point that it gives me a tension headache, but are a delight on my pc.

VLC will play most types of video files on the mac just like on the pc. But it doesn't look very good on the mac.

download Perian.

I don't have a mac at my disposal right now. Does this get rid of the blockiness?

I am watching a 2.4gb .mkv file on my in quick time with perian installed and there has been no blockiness so far. On VLC occasionally I would get blockiness on the same video file and have noticed none so far on the same parts with Perian. Perian works great

Most definitely. The reason I use VLC is so I can do full screen on an extended desktop (My TV), which Quicktime won't support without "Pro."

I'd mirror, but it doesn't fill right, so I prefer the extended mode.
