Post here if you didn't have success with the first version, and find the RC2 does a better job.

Vista, Windows 7, International, 64-bit support
Less flakiness in the payload
Cydia tar cleaned up
Improved logging with slightly more useful errors
New kernel patches, codesign errors gone. Props posixninja
Added vm_map +x, passed vm_check
No winterboard yet, but now that ball is in Saurik's court :-)
Still in beta, use caution

+1 here :). RC1 just kept putting my phone in recovery mode then freezing, RC2 worked first time, love it! I was missing having a jailbroken phone, I've been jailbroken since my first gen iPhone, and then the 3G, I'm so happy now I have my 3GS jailbroken :)!

I installed the first beta. Do I have to re-jailbreak with RC2 to get the patches?

People have been running RC2 over the first release with no issue, though of course, ymmv.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

I ran RC2 over RC1 and it took 30 seconds, didn't lose anything. Errors in terminal are gone now. As mentioned above, tricker/voip don't work, I thought they only needed the vm_patch :( Guess not.

Any good tutorials out there for noobs like myself? Just got my iPhone this past week and I really don't like the idea of screwing around with my phone when I don't know what I'm doing. Hehe.

This guide is good (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4417)

It's really easy to do, post here if you run into any problems and I'm sure someone will be able to help :)

When you guys install rc2 over rc1 do your freeze icon pop up? I deleted freeze in rc1 after I install Cydia. Installing rc2 did remove the terminal errors though.

What apps are still not working under this?

The cydia apps I used a lot were supreme prefs, ssh, cycorder(wont be necessary anymore), lockinfo, pandora controls, and winterboard. I wanted to start using Cylay too.

If these for the most part work, I'm gonna consider signing a contract and getting a 3GS(I bought my current and previous iphones used).

WinterBoard does not work, I read that Cylay does not work. Can't comment on the others. Many apps relying on MobileSubstrate still aren't 100% compatible (WB, VoIPover3G, etc).

As a side note, Purplera1n RC2a has been released. He says that if you already have RC2, theres absolutely no reason to upgrade.

Isnt purplera1n meant to be 3GS only? And the dev team have something else released for the 3G?

Purplera1n is hands down the fastest, easiest way to Jailbreak.. Hope to see more improvements in the future (if improvements are needed, looks like the dev's that code the native apps are the ones that have their hands full getting things to work on the 3GS).

I installed pra1n v2 sunday, and everything is perfect! Only problem is that I didn't see the box to enter the multidigit number the first time I went to the download page.

So apparently my jailbreak does not contain that code.

Can I go back and enter the code(which I do have), or am I fubared?

There are a number of websites selling software claiming to unlock the 3GS. How come the Dev Team haven't got a working unlock yet for the 3GS but these sites seemingly have?

The multidigit number being the ECID number, I suppose...

You don't need that number or the associated file to jailbreak. The purplera1n.exe file is the same for everyone, so you should have no problems.

The file that you get from your phone's unique ECID is the iBEC or iBSS (not sure which) that can be used, maybe, at a later date to jailbreak a later firmware from Apple, e.g. OS 3.1. Maybe. It's possible you need both these i-files, though, and you can get them through a DFU restore and capture method - look here (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4399) for one way, the one I used. Keep those files safe, for possible use in a later jailbreak, but you don't need them for purplera1n.

Hope that's iClear!

Dev Team has decided to wait for a later version of the Apple OS (like 3.1) before releasing their jailbreak, so not to show Apple their cards.

However, geohot and others have seen the light and released their jailbreak now, based on the same vulnerabilities in the iPhone 3GS software/hardware. This is available for free, do not pay for anything - the sites selling the 3GS jailbreak are most probably taking other people's free software and selling it on for money.

If you want to JB your 3GS there are already plenty of other threads around this site on the purplera1n software.
