Things You DISLIKE about the Alum. Macbook?

I've had my white Macbook (late 2006 model) for almost 3 years now and i'm super close to getting the new aluminum macbook.

When they were 1st introduced last year I thought it looked a bit ugly and more importantly didn't look like it could handle my rough day to day lifestyle. My white Macbook has survived tumbles, falls at home, school desks, flights in japan, when I slipped on the great wall of China, and even falling one story from the 2nd floor of the Sears Tower in Chicago. These past few years i've seen my Macbook fall, while i've gotten that feeling in heart gasping hoping it would survive each fall.

Well, now that these Macbooks are now considered "Pros" (Obviously new Macbooks will come out in 2010) with the new SD slot, etc etc...i'm now seeing the aluminum Macbooks as a new potential computer for me.

I'm still not thrilled about how they look, and have seen numerous threads on MacRumors about dents and marks on their aluminum Macbooks, but with Snow Leopard coming out soon I can't help but want a new 13inch Macbook Pro since it has the multi touch trackpad and...oh baby, the 7 hour battery life.

My current white macbook, almost 3 years in has gone through 817 charges. On just the battery, my Macbook will stay powered on for 3-4 hours while just working on a documents within Pages or reading PDF's. 2 Hours doing web browsing and 1 hour watching movies on Hulu, DVD player, or YouTube...You can see why the 7 hour battery life makes me happy...


Well, rather than asking "What do you love about your Macbook" since it seems i'm aware of the benefits of the alum. macbook, i'm wondering what you aren't too crazy about?

Hell, if you think there's even something awesome I haven't discovered leave a post too...

I've had mine for like 5 months now and my only complaint is i cant put it down. I'm hooked! :P

On a serious note...

The screen annoyed me at first but now Im so used to it I find matte displays a bit dull. Other than that I say get one!

Oh and if you're really worried about dents a speck or incase hard shell should help.

Very true, i've been thinking about my differences between want and need. I do not need this new alum. macbook, but want...sure, why not?

Apple will most likely replace my White Macbook for the new alum. one and want to see what to expect. As I originally mentioned, the wants would be the 7 hour battery life, multi-touch trackpad and just to have the latest Macbook.

Is it just me but outside of the Apple Store, I just don't see people with white Macbooks anymore?

As for the Sears Tower incident, I was vacationing and my GF and I were running away from security trying to leave the building, I guess at a moment of despair I saw on opening and threw my InCase backpack with Macbook inside outside the window to the street. Picked it up outside and left. I threw it padded side down so the Mac inside would fall into a more cushion-y landing.

In China, at the great wall, we snuck in alcohol (Bi-Jaio) (Spelling?) into the Great Wall and got drunk at this steeple like ending of the wall. It started raining so we walked down this really slippery slope at this funny angle. Slipped, not wanting to get hurt I purposely fell onto my back where my Macbook was in my incase backpack, all the pressure of the fall absorbing into the backpack...yet Macbook good as new.

I love the durability of this thing, for a moment wanted an AIR, just cause it's so light but need the features of the macbook like optical drive, etc.

But this is what really happened:

We were "being disruptive" during our visit. security came over, gave us a warning. Still continued being loud and actual police came over to talk to us. First question I asked was if we were being placed under arrest. They said no but needed to have a talk to us in some security room. Then they would escort us out. I figured since we were already going to be escorted out, that there would be no point in even talking to them. We told them we'd just leave, since we'd already spent an hour at the top and seen all the sights, so we just bolted. Originally I did this w/o warning my GF, but she quickly followed. I didn't think they'd chase after us but they did. they even yelled behind us saying we couldn't run in the building, liability and whatnot... About 2 floors lower one actually yelled "Stop! You're under arrest!"

We pushed everyone running down the escalators, after I already threw my backpack out this little window that seemed to be under construction. Of the 3 cops chasing us, 2 looked...not outta shape, but I def. knew I could outrun them. One of them looked like he'd been training for such an event and grabbed my wrist but you know. I was 20 @ the time, now 21. I'm guessing the cops were...35-40?

GF made it outside, grabbed a bag, got into a taxi and got out a few blocks later, I was then paranoid thinking cops would put out an APB on all Taxis you know? Then just walked like half a mile to Navy Pier.

Anyways, as for the replacement MAcbook. I've went to the Apple Store a few days ago, after 3 repairs within the past 3 months and the manager said that when I go in on Wednesday that I can surrender my current white macbook for a new aluminum one. I still have AppleCare and they said that people call all the time yelling at the employees upset with their problems. He said the rule is that if Apple replaces the macbook, they normally replace it with the very same model. But he said since I was nice and not rude to him and another employee that he'd let me give in my white macbook for a 13 inch alum. macbook pro.

I find it really interesting ppl care about other ppl online in these kinds of things. We had fun, obviously I wouldn't date a fat chick and I have a fun memory. I didn't start this thread to talk about that experience, I did however to hear what people that have a Macbook Pro don't like too much about their baby.

I personally can't see ANYTHING wrong with the macbook aluminum's. I love mine, the only thing that bothers me is that it doesn't have firewire, which has now been fixed. I would like better battery life too, which has also been fixed.

The new macbook pros are perfect for you man, trust me your gonna love it.

I dislike the DRM in the aluminum macbook, or rather all new macs. It has made it impossible to use cheap KVMs since cheap KVMs do not adhere to HDCP.

I think i'd put up with it having the new aluminum macbook with 7 hours of battery life than my white macbook. Though white macbook was my 1st mac, and definately my best computer i've ever owned.

@ the time when we were running away from the officer...he got close enough to grab my wrist but I "spasmmed" it away. My InCase backpack has a big ol' handle on the top center, where the cop could have easily grabbed it, stopped me completely and pretty much throw me violently on the ground.

I threw it out the window knowing he then would not be able to grab and throw me down; I didn't want him having that advantage. I threw it out over a year of owning the Macbook, already having dropped it a few times knowing it would be able to withstand a big drop in the backpack.

He could've just grabbed that handle and ...well, damn.

As an owner of an aluminum MBP, I'm pretty much satisfied with the machine. When I bought the machine, I was upgrading from a '08 WhiteBook, so I'm coming from a similar situation as you.

Things I don't like though? Huh. I haven't been able to get seven hours of battery life as advertised. More like 5. Additionally, the lack of a 9600M GT is a bummer, not that the 9400M isn't plenty powerful. Oil shows on the keys regardless of how clean your hands are and the screen easily collects fingerprints.

Overall, the machine is awesome. There's this those few flaws that bug me.

unibody Aluminum MacBook Pros and Cons

Well I started with the uMBP the 2.53 model in early 2009, great machine fast, graphics are great, unit worked perfect, however it was too heavy and too big for my likes. I then decided on the uMB with the 2.4 and backlit keyboard, what a great machine, fast, light, easy to use, works for 90% of the apps I use, I did upgrade the drive to a 320GB 7200 RPM Hitachi, also upgrade to 4GB Ram, was well worth the switch. I do some photo stuff with my Canon Rebel XTi, some video editing, some light gaming, and web design, so we are 100% satisfied because it does what I need it to.

I think it was a well designed notebook with a great mousepad, although some might not like it. This MB runs XP so much faster then my high end HP notebook, it runs all apps great no antivirus which is cool.

Of course this is all my opinion however it works for me, I am not a fan of the new ones even though they have a better screen, because I like to replace my own hard dives, and I am not sure there is going to be a really big difference in the battery, and the CPU is a minimal upgrade considering it still uses 3MB of cache.

They would have the area by that window blocked. And lastly- security is very tight there. You wouldn't have escaped, believe me.

This is an interesting point you bring up. I've never had too much trouble with my white macbook regarding oil stains and dirty marks. I'm not saying I wash my hands before using my Macbook everytime, hardly. But I do go through this repeating weekly mantra of cleaning my macbook. When I first got it I remember washing my hands all the time thinking, "Why did they make it white?!" But it doesn't pose too much of a problem. . .Except, I'll hesitate to take it out if I know its dirty and needs a good cleaning if I'm like at a StarBucks and i'm sitting right next to a cute girl. I know, I know, but it's true. :o

Its good to hear you enjoy it and with all the heavy work you do it seems like I should enjoy it throughly as well. I like to switch the HD too, the 80GB that came with my original was too small, then went up to a WD 500GB HD.

I've only had mine for a few weeks, and the only complaint that I can come up with is that while using the touchpad my hand rests right on the front edge, and the edge is sort of sharp. It just cuts into my hand as it rests there. Other than that, PERFECT!

Well I have the fifteen inch Macbook Pro, the most recent revision. And the only parts I don't like are:


only one FireWire 800 port there should be two on separate busses
All of the ports are on one side, so I can't mouse left handed (I'm trying to train myself...)
All of the function keys have already been assigned functions. It would work much better with just one more row of keys.

I don't actually own an aluminium macbook, but the main disadvantage seems to be dents in the casing and the reflective screen (we have an imac here and in broad daylight the reflection is disturbing... and that's a window thats 15 meters behind the imac).

One silly little other thing I noticed when looking at the 13" macbook pro in the store are the holes for the microphone (left top of the keyboard). I always think it's dirt :p.

The edges are sharp, but if you aren't bothered by the edges on your MacBook, you won't be by the ones on the MBP.

I think the building you're referring to is Water Tower Place. The "tower" has the river to the west and across the street (north) there are no shops. Water Tower Place, however, has a huge food court in the bottom level, though it has no windows you are able to open either, but is located on Michigan Ave. where there would be lots of shops around.

my hinge shuffles back and forth slightly. the genius at my local apple store was willing to replace my display, but i felt guilty ordering a $800 part over a insignificant plastic piece. however, the next time my computer breaks, i will use this as leverage to get some compensation. honestly, if the manager of your store is willing to replace your macbook for free, why the hell not.

My main computer is a 17" MB Pro full specs, but for traveling around, I got a new 13" MB Pro. On the whole, I'm very pleased with it.

However, when I went to the library to do some research, I noticed that the glossy screen was a distraction as it reflected the natural light coming from the window and the fluorescent lights overhead.

I guess that I'll learn to live with it, but be aware that no matter what angle you tilt the screen, there will always be a glare when you are outdoors or in an office environment where they use fluorescent lighting.

I just picked up my first ever Mac a couple weeks ago in the form of a 15" UMBP. Most of my complaints deal with trying to figure out how OSX does (or doesn't do) various tasks that I know how to do in Windows. And the keyboard annoys me since it's just different enough to be confusing. However, with specific regard to the aluminum hardware I'd say the biggest complaints are...

01. The battery doesn't last anywhere near seven hours.
02. The screen is overly glossy to the point of being annoying.
03. The screen has a tendency to allow gravity to drag it down.
04. There aren't nearly enough USB ports for connecting devices.
05. Having all the ports on one side is a serious pain.
06. After the new firmware I get that beach ball thing more often.
07. The edge is just sharp enough to be uncomfortable.
08. The screen has really nice color but not the best resolution.
09. The speakers are just as tinny and pointless as any other laptop.
10. It's heavier than I would like.

I'm sure I can think up other things to be annoyed with but I ended up keeping this thing so I guess it can't be all that bad. I'll probably end up installing Windows for work and leaving OSX for play and for when I'm traveling and need as much battery power as I can muster.

Not a new pro owner, but an older pro owner.

The Al case is great, feels great and looks great. Is light and all, but the thing wont stand minor hits like plastic would, and that annoys me. I dropped my computer case once, from like 1 ft,it landed on the corner, just where the pads from the bottom and side get together. My MBP just bent, not much, and if you dont look for it you may not see it, but i know a whitebook would have done better.

Thats not because of the design of course, is because of the nature of metal itself, it is more durable but is not better in a fall/bump scenario.

A friend of mine has a late 2008 MBP, she dropped the charger on the top of it and it has a small recessed area, again, plastic would have done better but well.

And finally, i hate how hot it gets. I know is just one big heatsink but it bother me that apple wont leave space for proper airflow, i mean, there was no need to go from 1 inch to .97 inch besides fancy marketing, i rather get that space for airflow than my lap scorched.

I am satisifed with mine overall... Only a few things I am not liking.
One is the magnets that hold the macbook closed.. I never really noticed them being so week and useless until I got my new laptop bag (switched from backpack style to messenger bag). My macbook always opens up.

I also compared to to my brothers new 13" pro. His magnets are A LOT stronger, and does not open in my bag...
Maybe this is a defect in mine only, not sure. But I don't like it.

Another thing I don't like is the DVD drive, it is very loud when you pop in a disc. Lots of crunching and scary sounds..

Finally I am not liking the fact that the mini display port does not do audio. Hopefully this is fixed with a firmware update and is not a hardware issue.

I think the building you're referring to is Water Tower Place. The "tower" has the river to the west and across the street (north) there are no shops. Water Tower Place, however, has a huge food court in the bottom level, though it has no windows you are able to open either, but is located on Michigan Ave. where there would be lots of shops around.

Sounds like the OP might me talking about John Hancock Center? There is a Jamba Juice down there, and it has an observation deck and all that..

Oh: and the one thing I dont like about my 13" Aluminum: I didnt get the bigger screen! haha :)
