If your iPhone's screen is black, it's in DFU mode. If you see anything on the screen, it may be in Recovery. 🙂 I can confirm however that DFU mode is able to be used to restore my iPhone on a 13" MBP with 10.5.7.

impulse462 macrumors 68020 Jul 6, 2009 #7 i think its supposed to be 10 and 10 second counts im not sure. as in you hold down the home and power button for 10 seconds than just the home for 10 seconds or until the little dialogue box in itunes appears
