messaging settings questions

in settings, under messages, what is show preview on/off and show subject field on/off.....I turn them on/off and dont notice any differences with my messages?

It's to do with the way an incoming message shows up on your lockscreen - whether it just tells you that you have a new text, or whether it shows you who it's from and the start of the message
