I'm going to be getting the imac that is $1799 it comes with 2.93 ghz but I'm going to lift it to 3.06 ghz. It also comes with 4 ram. I'm going to be getting logic studio, taking guitar and piano lessons from gband and getting the symphonic choir that takes up significant amount of space. I want my computer to run as smoothly as possible and somebody said get ram, ram and more ram. To go from 4 ram to 8 ram on apple it is $1000 and I was hoping someone may know where to get it for much cheaper. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks:)

A forum search would have helped you with this, but try www.macsales.com or www.crucial.com.
Still going to cost you about $700, though.

Crucial (http://crucial.com), Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/) or OWC (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/pc).
4Gb DDR3 chips are still very expensive so I recommend you to wait. It's still at least 600$ for 8Gb

Currently I'm running Safari with 13 tabs opened, Photoshop CS4, Aperture 2, iTunes, Adium... Things like that at the same time without slowdowns. 80% of my RAM is in use now which is quite much but no lags or crashes.
I can't say how much you have to wait but prices are coming down all the time, so ~6 months and 8Gb will be at reasonable price. Bookmark those links and look them as the time goes by, I can't say which will be the cheapest, but I've always used Crucial. 4Gb is enough for most people, if it isn't for you, buy 8Gb or think about Mac Pro. High-end iMac with 8Gb is more than quad MP

Your computer right now has 2 x 2gig sticks in it = 4 gigs. You only have room for two sticks, so you would need two completely new ones, hence 2 x 4gig sticks = 8 gigs.
Don't worry about the questions, that what this place is for. Congrats on the iMac purchase.

Geoffreak has got a point. Why don't you get the machine you have and run what you need. Download this Widget, http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
It's free and will tell you how much of your RAM you are using. If you are running out, splurge for the 8 gigs, if not, don't worry about it.

Thanks guys my issue is that I will be running logic studio, using gband lessons, and hope to get the symphonic choir. I understand the choir takes up a great deal of space I would however be saving all of my projects in logic studio to an external harddrive. And probably dumping the gband lessons off my computer after I finish them as I believe you can download them anytime. So does this sound like it would run smoothly under the current imac parameters of 3.06 ghz and 4 ram. I'd be thrilled if this is all I need but if you see something in this note that flashes a light in your head that says he's gonna need more of this or more of that please do let me know. Thanks for the continued support:)

I think you will be fine with 4, but again, once you get it you'll have the 4 gigs anyway, so test it out. If the RAM is being used up, go for the 8.

This is exactly it.
The iMac only has two spots for RAM.
Currently, the iMac you ordered will have each slot filled with a stick that has 2 gigs. That gives you a total of 4 gigs of RAM.
If you want 8, you must replace each set you already have with two new 4 gig sticks. Those sticks cost around $300-400 each.

Not sure anyone will see this and this is really off the topic well sort of. With an imac at 3.06 ghz and 4 ram and using an external harddrive how many audio and instrument tracks would I be able to use with logic studio. I really hope it's over 20 for each and particularly audio. I use to only be able to use 16 with gband of each and found it insufficient. If anyone knows of even a rough estimation I'd appreciate it thanks:)

You can't get it fully used because system and apps "saves" RAM when it's starting to be fully used. That's because your system will likely fail if it's 100% used

Hellhammer, I would get a macpro in the first place but they are so expensive. In fact when I started the journey into getting a home studio that was the one that I wanted. But then figured out less funds were going to come in and switched to the imac. However if a macpro would do everything i've asked of it might be a good idea to push the deadline for equipment to a later date and splurge on it. What I did not get was that it showed it got 3 Gb and the imac got 4 so this is quite confusing. Let me know your thoughts I appreciate it.:)

Quad-core Mac Pro has four RAM slots and it's max is 8Gb (I'm not sure is it 16Gb but Apple says it's 8Gb and Intel says it's 8Gb but I've heard that it can take up to 16Gb)
Stock quad-core Mac Pro: 2499$
4 x 2Gb DDR3 from Crucial (http://crucial.com): 188$
Total: 2687$
And you can still upgrade GPU and maybe more RAM and you have 4 HD slots while iMac has only one
iMac 3.06GHz, GT130, 1TB: 2199$
2 x 4Gb DDR3 from Crucial: 899$ (can be cheaper from other manufacturer)
Total: 3098$
No upgradeable GPU or processor, RAM maxed out, so HD is only upgradeable thing left.
I would get Mac Pro, it gives you the biggest bang for your buck

hellhammer I appreciate the breakdown and believe I will take your advice. It may take a few more months but it sounds like it's well worth it. How come the Gb cost so much less for the macpro than the imac Gb? It's funny but everyone has a different opinion and one guy told me you get the best bang for your buck with the imac. Sorry, totally scratch that as I think he was comparing to an laptop I was looking at so doesn't apply. But out of your calculations it would seem that the macpro is the way to go.

This doesn't factor in the 24" screen. Apples LED 24" display is $899. Keep that in mind.
The RAM is more expensive in the iMac because it is made of laptop parts.
As for your choices, I do say get a mac pro, just keep in mind you need to buy a display.

I can feel the mac pro slipping out of my fingers. first my mind is blown that 2499 doesn't come with a screen. And then in order to get 8 gb it's going to cost me another 1000. So we're looking at around 4500. I think it may be too rich for my blood. I must have been misunderstanding the calculations. Oh, I want it but I can't afford to go that long without a computer when I think I can get an imac for half the price that will do fine with what I need. So just as you think it's all coming together it flips on you. Been my experience now for months just can't quite figure out what to get. But thanks all you've helped me realize that at this particular time macpro doesn't seem a possibility hopefully in the future it will.:)

I just re-looked at what you need the machine for, and the high end iMac will be more than sufficient. I run Logic and Pro Tools on my 2.8 iMac with 4 gigs of RAM without any issues. As many of us mentioned, you might not need the 8 gigs of RAM, so you may want to wait until the price comes down. If you need it I recommend OWC:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/8566DDR3S8GP/
($729)
Remember, upgrading to the High End iMac gives you more Hard Drive Space and a better Graphics Card (you might even consider maxing out the Graphics Card to the ATI card...completely worth the $50).

Yes that iMac will be sufficient (consider getting the high-end iMac and the ATI 4850), and get 8GB of RAM when it is cheaper, I think 4GB of RAM will be fine for you at the moment. Crucial.com or Macsales.com is great place for 8GB of RAM, but it is quite expensive ($700-$900)

As others have said, get the machine first and only worry about adding RAM if you have a problem.
You are sort of obsessing here over not having enough RAM and you don't even have the computer yet.
I have the 2.93ghz iMac and routinely run a ton of very intensive programs on it, including Windows 7 RC1 under VMWare and the Mac has no problems with it. I've had 95% of my RAM in use and everything runs extremely smooth with no slowdowns or problems.
Get the Mac that makes the most sense for you (probably iMac) and only obsess over memory upgrades when you actually run into an issue doing everything you want to do with the machine.
Noone can tell you when memory prices are going to go down. In some cases they spike back up for a few months. Anything can happen, but it's pretty unlikely that you are going to run into huge performance issues with a top of the line iMac with 4GB of RAM.
Macs hold their value extremely well. In the off chance that you are not satisfied with the performance of the iMac then another option is for you to simply sell it for 80% of what you paid for it and put the monies towards a faster Mac.

I'd love to have the macpro but I honestly can't see how it would be cheaper than the imac. Of course I want all the power but as many have stated I should not worry until I run into issues running logic studio, symphonic choir and my learning lessons through gband. Someone said I'm obsessing over ram. Here's the reason why I was in the apple forum and I had guys saying get ram, ram and more ram. You get the picture they were pushing it hard so if it seems as if I'm obsessing it's just something I was told in the apple forum. You've all been so great and I realize I'm writing this as if it's the last one but who am I kidding I'll always have more questions but I certainly feel good about the imac feedback. :)

Congrats of your purchase! Feel free to ask whatever you want here in MacRumors but please give MRoogle (http://mroogle.edesignuk.com/) a chance before posting, it answers most of your questions faster than new thread would.
It's a beast, you'll love it

I am getting a new 3.06GHz IMac, >I will use it for video editing and for image retouching.
Sometimes I work on very heavy images (2 gb and more) with multiple programs opened at the same time, so I will definetly upgrade the RAM to 8 gb.
Mac 8 gb ram kit cost a fortune : 1000$
so I searched and searched and found out that the price can change very much from company to company.
I found for example this very cheap one : http://forums.mactalk.com.au/42/60867-09-mac-pro-8gb-ddr3-1066-ram-kits-now-sale-276-99-ramcity-com-au.html
but I am sure is can't trust it.
Crucial (the company that I normally trust more) does not seem to have 8 gb ram kits so far.
OWC is at 729,29 $ http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/DDR3_2009
Do you guys have any suggestion on how to buy good and cheap 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM for an IMAC ?
thanks a lot

yeah I'd love to find that too but the overwhelming response seems to be to wait 3-6 months and it will go down. You probably want it now and I feel the same way but unfortunately when I too looked owc's 729 was the best that I'd found. And I'd also come to learn to really only go for owc, crucial and someone had mentioned I believe mushkin so maybe try that one.

Sorry guys one more question. You all feel good about what I'll be running with 4 ram just wanted to run some specs by you. I'll of course have logic studio but here are the specs on the symphonic choir the guy said you need a dual core G5 1.8ghz and 2 gb ram. Will this all run smoothly or does it sound like more ram time. I will also have the lessons for guitar and piano from gband. Sorry, I know you all have spent a great deal of time helping me out and I appreciate it:)

The 3.06 iMac is more than enough for what you said. 4GB of RAM is fine.

Sorry, I know I said one more thing and macmini you're probably getting tired of saying no problem. It's this one thing I don't understand. They say you have let's say 4 GB ram. Yet it takes 39 GB to load all of the Logic Studio stuff onto the computer. Confused how it says 4 GB and ugh! Totally confused by this. Obviously there's more GB than 4 and I know I've failed to mention yet that I know very little about computers but a quick explanation would put to rest what I've been wondering for quite some time just haven't spoke up about yet. Thanks for the help:)

The 4 gigs is just for the program. The 39GB is for all of the extra sound effects, plug ins, loops etc...those typically can be installed on an external drive if you need too, however, you are buying a 1tb drive, so don't worry about the space.
