Use 2 OS on external drive

Im buying an external drive this weekend but want to know if i can partition it seperately so that i can use the 1 drive for my bootcamp and os x install? I know its cheap enough but i personally rather just 1 drive, plus my budget is limited being a student.... If your not able to, could i just use bootcamp and partition the external drive that way?

EDIT - i dont mind if i cant write from one to another if that makes a difference
