No, it looks like they've updated redsn0w to jailbreak & unlock the 3GS. From Twitter:

RT @iphone_dev Released: redsn0w 0.8 (incl. 3GS, hactivate, linux) http://is.gd/1pRlV . Ultrasn0W 0.8 (incl. 3GS support) (see Cydia).

Wonder who will be the first to investigate...

Getting it too, just to see the process. I used purplera1n yesterday and couldn't believe how easy it was. And if it was a bad move (I did back up the iBEC n iBSS) then I got too greedy:D

Questions: please confirm that redsn0w can now unlock the 3GS! Did you start from unlocked state? How easy was it? What's the vague process you had to go through? (Never had a 2G/3G so not familiar with Dev Team's stuff.)

To answer your question, a new WinterBoard was released through Cydia today so go ahead and download it. I did, and it's working fine :D

Using this to JB my father's 3g iphone. Real simple too and I'll compare it to my purplera1n 3GS (just installed a winterboard theme too:D).

So does ultra snow jailbreaks and unlocks the 3Gs?

Check out the 3rd link in this thread...then click the for the OS (win/OSX/linux) you're using...you'll find your answer (and it's yes, for redsn0w, not ultrasnow).

Has anyone tested this on the 3.1 beta? I had to downgrade back to 3.0 to purplera1n but I miss the improved boot/reboot times ... not enough to lose the jailbreak and go back to 3.1, but whatever. If the Dev Team JB works with 3.1, I'd love to get it back ... Anyone try it yet?

Ultrasn0w only unlocks. You need to JB first.

I purplera1n'ed so what's the diff between them? Do you have to restore to jail break with dev teams version ?

No just bang it on but it didn't remove the freeze app I used diskaid to remove that and reboot !

Is this legit? I'm a little skeptical.. How many people confirmed this JB for the 3GS. And winterboard works?! oh joy!

I have no idea what the differences are between the two jailbreaks. For all I know they can be the same. If purplera1n is working for you, why bother?

If you do re-jailbreak using redsn0w, I would suggest that you do a full restore to stock first.

I'm on my second attempt at this. Redsn0w gets to the point where it says "waiting for reboot" but the phone never reboots... I've given it about four minutes this time and still nothing.

I'm on a 3GS. Any advice?

Restore and do the purplra1n one, it's much easier. The only difference between the 2 JB is the way the JB is done, both ways lead to the same place so it doesn't matter. All you hav to do in purplerain is plug your phone in and click one button and that's it.

Jul 7, 2009, 10:33 AM
That was a whole lot easier. I'm not sure if it worked right though...

I got a blank icon on the second page labelled "Freeze". Is that right?

Nevermind. I opened it and it's installing Cydia.

Edit: Now it says "Finished" but is just sitting there for a second time. The first time I closed and there was no Cydia icon...

That's what it sounds like and THAT would be the difference between the two. The purplera1n JB is easier but you can't use as many apps.

Do you know what your talking about? Winterboard works with purplerain cydia updated it today. There's is no difference in devs way and the purplerain way.
Lostprophet reboot your phone if you don't see the cydia icon.

Once it says "Finished" you must reboot your iPhone in order for Cydia to show up.

To get rid of the Freeze Icon after this, Follow this guide:

Helped me a lot!

After Purplera1n rc1 and rc2 I had some odd issues with my 3Gs..

For some reason my iPhone lost the 3G signal and I could not get it back. I had to turn off 3G via sbsettings and then airplane mode and then I got Edge back but not 3G.

I waited a good 30 min before I could turn my 3G antenna back on and then it worked. I had this happen two times to me once after rc1 and once after rc2.

I just ran redsn0w over purplera1n without a restore and so far it's worked fine although I had to reinstall everything I already installed via cydia.

It turns out that redsn0w uses the same exploit as purplera1n. They just use different injection methods.

Just go to the purplera1n website and download the JB Exe. That will ebthe easiest for you if you don't know what your doing.

So I just need to download the 3.0 ispw file and this right?

The best jailbreak is to download the 3.0 firmware via iTunes. I experience that redsn0w 0.8 got stuck on my 3GS on waiting for reboot. I pressed restore in iTunes and it was downloading, when the Extracting popup came I pressed cancel and copied the firmware downloaded by iTunes to my desktop.

Downloading from the apple site went wrong, but when I downloaded with iTunes it went ok.

To sum up what I did:

1. Have your iPhone on.
2. Open up iTunes.
3. Press restore, wait for it to finish downloading 3.0 firmware.
4. Press Cancel when it's extracting.
6. Enter DFU mode.
7. Locate the firmware downloaded by iTunes
8. Open up redsn0w and follow steps.

Make sure your iPhone is restored to the 3.0 firmware (make sure to restore to 3.0 if jailbroken before, like purlplera1n)

If any questions feel free to ask.

Purplera1n and Redsn0w are used to jailbreak iPhones. They both do the same thing using slightly different methods. Take your pick.

Ultrasn0w is used to unlock iPhones with firmware 3.0.

Yellowsn0w is used to unlock iPhones with firmwre 2.2.1.

just waiting for Tricker3G and/or Voip so I can start Slinging...:D
