You will see that you go to the Gmail sign in page. I can't do more than that because I don't have Gmail either. But the point is that the link was just to show you that Safari is listed as a supported browser.
GMail is done entirely in java and built around IE, ya know, the worlds most used browser. It worked with Safari since day one, but untill further tests, they didn't want to say it worked 100%.
I have a GMail account and use Safari and it still has lots of bugs. And perhaps I joined GMail minutes before they announced Safari support, but when I set up my GMail account yesterday, Safari was not an officially supported browser. You can still use it, like I do, but lots of bugs...

Building around a single browser/platform is lazy - there are standards for web development that allow for independence from one browser or another. They used a browser sniffer (more laziness) to keep Safari users out - kinda tough to verify that it would work in Safari at all.
