No, everything is kept just the way it is. Create a back up in iTunes before doing the jailbreak, just in case something goes wrong during the jailbreak.

Just connect your phone to iTunes and restore from backup--right click on your phone and you should see that option. End result is everyone on your phone at last backup is restores and you also have a jailbroken device.

I did a restore, and got my contacts, txts, pics, ect. everything except the apps I had DLed. I guess those don't get backed up?

Even if they didn't get added via backup. Just do a normal sync and you will get them back.

do jailbroken phones access the app store?

No, however there is a JB app called AppSync which you might check out. Available via Cydia after you add the source.

Ya you can still access the app store..the only thing that jailbreaking does is add apps that apple doesn't allow in the app store.

Ok. I won't ha ha.

Should I use a specific jailbreaking service? I like my AT&T but I'm giving my first gen iphone to my mom and she's on a local network (cincinnati bell)

She won't do it without the app store.

I misread his question, thought he was asking if he would lose JB apps. Sorry for mis-info.

No worries. Could you answer my last question? Do you know if I have to use a certain jb service? Or is there one you recommend?

I recommend redsn0w .0.8, it's new and will work for everything including 3GS. Also just install Cydia, not Icy as posters report it causes problems when installed thru redsn0w (they may have fixed that with this version) If you want Icy, you can get it after JB using Cydia.

Get a tutorial, step by step, iClarified has a good one.

Make sure you back up your photos (like with iPhoto). Not sure if a regular backup saves those as I have always used iPhoto to back them up.
