How do user titles work?
User titles are based on post counts:
Newbie => 0 - 29 posts
Member => 30 posts
Regular => 100 posts (minimum required to post in the Politics, Religion, Social Issues forum)
6502 => 250 posts (minimum required for access to the Marketplace forum)
6502a => 500 posts (minimum required to have an avatar)
65816 => 1,000 posts
65832 => 1,500 posts
68000 => 1,505 posts
68010 => 2,000 posts
68020 => 2,005 posts
68030 => 2,500 posts
68040 => 3,000 posts
601 => 5,000 posts
603 => 10,000 posts
604 => 15,000 posts
G3 => 20,000 posts
G4 => 25,000 posts
G5 => 30,000 posts
etc....
Demi-Goddess, Demi-God or Contributor => Member who has contributed to the site and has chosen to use one of those three titles.
(Moderator) suffix => Member who is also a moderator
(Moderator emeritus) suffix => Member who is a former moderator
macrumors god => administrator

Demi status is not related to post count, it's related to whether you've donated to MR. Thus being a demi has nothing to do with reaching the 500 post threshold which is required to have an avatar.

Yes, if they chose not to have a Demi title displayed, they would have the standard listings
The highest "listed" value is Eidorian at G3
There are two 604's wdlove and raggedimmi
However, there are lots of Demis and Mods that qualify for these titles

And your credit info isn't on the line ... the site uses PayPal.

Even so, the site would have no ability to financially moderate a problem in the marketplace. They're not around to issue refunds to someone who claims to have been scammed.

The site likely has no desire to play cop at all. The interest is not in having a bustling marketplace, but rather one that requires little moderation. That isn't achieved by letting anyone use it that wants to.
