I have USAA, who are awesome.
Free checking with interest, no ATM fees, excellent customer service.

BMO Bank of Montreal. I get a $5.45/month chequing account that has unlimited transactions, including cheque writing and bill payments online. I get an $8.50 student discount on it which makes it $5.45, it's usually 13.95. The other bank's rates suck. :) That's about where the good stuff ends. I don't like their customer service, their website can be buggy, and it seems like you have to tell them to do things that should be done right when you open the account. Some family is with RBC.

The only banks around her are locally owned or regional. Right now I'm with Whitaker Bank of KY. Of the three I've used so far they're the best. Free checking, free online banking w/bill pay, and the tellers are all really nice. I'm usually in and out in about a minute.

Seems like we may all not want to disclose who we bank with. Thats one less variable a thief would need to have in order to make off with your money. Call me paranoid lol... Between that and the fact that a lot of people on here disclose intimate details of their life... passwords are prob pretty easy to come by... just sayin!

I use Etrade. Their a stock and portfolio company more then a bank. So they don't act like a bank. Checking with interest (Something like .8%) 3% interest saving account. My 401K rolled into an IRA for me. Quick access to stocks.
Best of all there is no "Available" and "Actual" balance. It is either there or it is not. I can buy a sandwich, look at my account right then and that sandwich is taken out.
unlike a bank that makes billions on overdrafts, etrade simply does not allow your account to go negative.
There is some down sides as they are not a bank, but I am happy not dealing with banks.

This looks really interesting. Do you have to deposit cash/checks at an actual bank and have it transfered? And if you have automatic payments coming out of the account and there is insufficient funds do you just get charged for a returned payment by the company trying to withdraw a payment?

As someone who worked at BOA for almost 4 years I can tell you that most of their accounts are free, you just have to make sure you’re in the right type of account for how you use it. Although the fees are bad when you incur them – I’ll tell you a good portion of our customers never experienced any because they were in the right accounts.
In any case, I’m with a regional bank now and they are hundreds times over better to their associates and customers. ;)

My main bank is a local bank with around 10-15 branches statewide. They rock! I get 4% interest in checking (no min. balance), ATM fee refunds, free online banking, and a lot more. I love 'em and would never go back to a megabank.
I also have accounts at my former credit union, and an ING online savings/checking account.

If you are mainly interested in the card... you could get a Visa Buxx card. Works just like a debit card... and you can have it when you're 15. I think I got mine when I was around 15.

Currently US BanCorp (US Bank). No problems - they've been pretty good to me.
Was a B of A customer for about a decade, but their handling of an identity theft issue I had a few years back was abysmal - so I made the switch (I will say that the local branch of B of A was great during the episode, but the corporate office...)

Checking with PNC(wonderful), savings with ING(used to be wonderful). ING has been a pretty good bank, however lately the interest rate on their savings account just keeps on slipping to the point where it's almost useless to put anything in there anymore.
Anyone else know where I can get a higher rate? I saw that CapitalOne offers 1.75 on accounts > $10k, but I don't know how well their service/security is.
Don't want to put my cash in any bank that uses Windows servers:eek:

First Republic.
Opened my account in NY when I heard that they refund all ATM fees if you pull cash out at other bank's ATMs. If you're from NY, you know that most ATMs are either HSBC or Citi. I'm a fan of neither. This allowed me to use any ATM I could find and not worry about fees.
Thankfully, when I moved back to CA, there is a branch less than 5 minutes away.

I bank with a small credit union.
No fee, no minimum balance and better interested rate than the best interested rates on the big bank.
Every day I wonder why people bank with the bank like BofA or chase and the worse of the worse Wellsfargo.

I bank with a little no name local credit union. great service. my dad's had an account there for 30 years so he gets some perks that I get too. They have loans rates that rival big national banks. though my student loans are though Wells Fargo 'cause there rock solid because of warren buffett.

I bank at 3 different places for a variety of reasons:
Bank of The West - my main bank for the last 15 years. They've been great, good at catching some fraud transactions. Great at restoring my account when my checkbook was stolen. I like them because the aren't *too* large, but have plenty of ATM locations in my area.
B of A - hate them. Only have the account because it's joint w/ my husband who has banked with them since he was 5 or something. The only good thing I like about them is their extremely expansive ATM network.
Local credit union - Specifically connected to my work. It consists of a whopping one whole branch. They are great, greet you by name when you walk in the door - you barely have to give them your name, much less your account number! They are also great w/ loans - I went to the branch, applied for a car loan, and by the time I got back to work 20 minutes later, I had a voice mail telling me I was approved! Their ATM network is not large, but they partner w/ other local credit unions, so I still have plenty of ATMs to access - even for deposits - w/out paying those exorbitant "service fees"
--In case you haven't guess, ATM access is critical for me. I rarely walk inside a bank branch, I just need the machine

Why are ATMs so important?
I just find them very convenient as they are 24/7. I never know where I will be when I need cash, so having local ATM access is a good thing.
plus, some bad memories of B of A - as a teen, I had some sort of "ATM only" account and I was charged $5 or something every time I walked into the bank rather than use a machine  I think it just trained me to take care of everything via ATM and to avoid real tellers at all costs.

ATMs are one of the great things about USAA, they don't own any, so they will refund other bank's fees each month when you get cash.

Debit card.
Except when people don't take debit cards - i.e., the cafeteria at my work is cash only but my local credit union has an ATM at my work location so it works out ok. I use my debit cards probably 90% of the time, but some places still insist on the greenbacks :D

Local bank. Great rates, great service. I just refi-ed my mortgage via email. The loan officer brought the paperwork to my house for me to sign the papers. Never had to go to the branch. Try that with any national bank that has their hands out for a bailout.

In the states, I used to bank with Riggs. It was easily the single best bank for foreign currencies and transactions. I guess too easy, considering what they were involved in. :(
ABN AMRO, Shinhan and Barclays. And Wachovia, now Wells-Fargo. These super-mega-ultra-multi-international banks never work the way they're supposed to. They'll tell you, "Oh, we have branches in eleventy countries, blah blah blah," but when you actually try to anything else other than taking money out of an ATM, they'll still hit you with transaction fees, foreign currency fees, transfer fees and delays and delays and delays. I even fell for that line from HSBC once about how they can arrange for credit scores to be transfered/translated to every country in which they operate. Bullpuckey.
Bank, pah.
