Can you still pick up an email address which is @mac as opposed to @me?

Or has this completely been discontinued?

If you have a .Mac box, yes I think you can still do that. Otherwise, it's discontinued. I wish I would have gotten .Mac before it go renamed.

I presume these are very rare to find?

No, ALL new sign ups now get .me only.

In fact, I upgraded my single account (I am .mac/.me) to a family account, and even my family members get .me only.

YES! How I wish we could still get a choice to use an @mac instead of @me. IMHO @me is just kind of ridiculous. Nothing shouts out "I'M A PROUD MAC USER" than having an @mac.com email address. With @me, it's like, "What was that, again?"

I never understood why the move from .mac to .me did not make much sense.

I like my dot mac address.

Although, dot me is growing on me a bit.

Not sure, but I think that the move from dot mac to dot me was to differentiate the service from the Mac. That way it would be more cross platform in name. Again, just a guess.

You may have a point there, but I think it would be really dumb of Apple to promote a cross-platform branding for such a service. They want the Halo Effect, and not something that feebly promotes the Mac.

It would be a lot easier for everyone if you could assume that every address was at both:

user_name@me.com

AND

user_name@mac.com
