View Full Version : Confused on birthday present

So, my brother's birthday (He'll turn 23) is in 2 days.

Of course, I procrastinate and don't get him anything...
I need some ideas on what to get him. He doesn't like clothes, and I hate giving clothes as gifts. Last year I gave him a bottle of cologne. He has everything in electronics. He's got a good laptop, a good desktop with a really nice monitor, a good camera (D40 with amazing lenses), he's got a good cell phone.

I'd like to stay under $100 if possible....

Thanks.

If your relationship with him is good enough, you could always do something homemade. Maybe you could orchestrate a party with all his close friends? It would be short notice but you could do it. I'd appreciate that more than any gift.

Well...I'm 15, I don't know his close friends...or how to get in touch with them, and my parents hate parties :).

And I'm super cool with him, he's been by my side since the day I was born. But, sadly I lack the homemaking skills.

Does he have an iPod? You could get him a nice case and some sexy headphones. An interesting gift would be a whiteboard if he has th space to hang it on a wall.

Hmm. Ok, I see a party is not do-able.
But homemade at your age is perfectly acceptable.
Maybe something for his desktop or laptop?
An accessory for a phone?
A new mouse?
A bag for his camera?

A cheap hooker?

When I read the title of this thread, I thought you meant that you were confused about a birthday present that you received...... like, your boyfriend bought you a gym membership or something.

Anyways.......

Why don't you take him out for a nice dinner- to his favorite restaurant, perhaps?

Or....

Sensual massage? :D

I'm sure you can get one for less than $100.

What does he need/want for his desktop or laptop, he has everything. Whenever he gets a new electronic item he goes on an accessory buying spree
He bought a case, a screen protector, two batteries, and a battery charger for his cell phone when he got it (30 days ago)
He's got a MX Revolution
He has a bag for his camera already

Yeah, I'll give him a hooker in front of my parents :p

And where will a 15 year old (Who doesn't have a ride anywhere) get some alcohol?

You just don't know the right people. I was buying alcohol all the time at 15-16 years old. :D

Uh, how long does the statute of limitations last on that?

I know how you feel, sometimes we all get stuck trying to think of what to buy someone. Is he adventurous or active, maybe get something crazy like a bungee jump or tandem sky dive? My sister bought me a tandem sky dive for Christmas when I was about his age. It was awesome!

If you do go the gift card route then be creative with it. Do like an entertainment pack that has a few iTunes cards, some local movie theater passes, and something like a Best Buy card for DVD or Blu Ray. Then he gets a little of everything and he can use it how he wants when he wants.

If your close like you said then another option is getting something that you guys can do together. Like tickets to a sporting event, comedy show, or concert.

Best of luck and definitely let us know what you decide and how it works out. :)

I was thinking of getting him a sky-dive thing, but isn't that like, super expensive?

For now, I've decided on getting him a used Xbox 360 for his bedroom.

Even though he has a 120" screen outside his bedroom that our current 360 is connected to, he wants one in his bedroom.

Power tools. Guys love power tools, even non-handyman types.:p I've been dropping hints to EVERYBODY on what to get me. *cough* Rage Evolution Circular Saw (http://professional-power-tool-guide.com/2009/02/evolution-rage-3-circular-review/) *cough* *cough*;)

That puppy is on the expensive side, but you can still find lots of handyman/hobbyist grade power tools for under $100.

It just depends. Most places are anywhere from about $125 to $250 for a tandem jump. That includes all the training, equipment, etc. So yeah this could be a little more than you were wanting to spend, but maybe you can get another family member to go in with you. It's definitely the most memorable gift I've ever received.

The only sports he likes (To watch) are football, and/or basketball.

He doesn't like Baseball, and doesn't really like soccer.

And yeah, nobody will EVER pitch in to get a Sky-Dive thing for my brother. Heck, they'd kill me for even buying a ticket.

You said he already has all sorts of Gizmo's with accessories. How about some tools so he can repair them.

A full Torx driver set T-5 to T-30+, Mini Screwdriver set, metric and standard Allen wrenches, pliers, dykes, regular size screw drivers, soldering iron etc...

If you do get hand tools get some well made Craftsman tools from Sears not the junk from the home improvement stores (Mac and Snap-On are too expensive). For electronic/electric tools other brands are fine.

Get a medium-sized one of those paper tote-bags they sell in the wrappings department of drug stores and greeting cards stores

Then buy a whole bunch of little things that are handy, yummy, funny. you know, packs of AA batts or AAA batts, a bag of M&Ms, a pair of clattering false teeth, a tiny toy truck or car, a micropore cleaning cloth, some Post-It notes, a pen, a couple SlimJims or other snack thing you know he likes... funny stuff like silly putty...

Then get some white or colored wrapping tissue and some cheap ribbon of the sort you can pull with scissor blade and make curl..

Go home, slam some tissue around each item, put a twist or two of ribbon on each one, throw them in the gift tote and he's got half an hour of laughing and unwrapping to remember for a long time. The more things and the more different types of little things you get, the more fun it is.

Nah, people around here still have too many hangups about drinking. Unless it's moonshine. :D

Louisiana, on the other hand, should change their state motto to "Don't Drink and Drive: You might hit a bump an spill it". They only raised their drinking age to 21 after the feds cut off highway funding. It was always fun going across the river and seeing what we could get. I think drive through liquor stores were invented there, and I'm pretty sure drive through daquiri stores were invented there.

You could ge him a fish. Buy a sexy 5-gallon tank (not one of those rectangular onces), some pebbles, a filter, a bubble stone, and a funny statue to put in it. Give him some money to buy the fish(es) he wants. You might want to ask a sales associate if I forgot anything necessary for survival. A turtle is an alternative option if fish just aren't his thing. ;)

That...is an amazing idea. Thank you. Unfortunately, my parents will never approve.

Plus, my brother works a job (And me 3x a week during summer) where he goes to work at ~6:30 AM, and comes back ~ 8 PM.

So, my parents won't take care of the fishey (Or turtle), and clearly my brother won't have time to during the day, and I won't either, so he'll last about a day or so.....

Does he like to read/have a favourite book?

If so you can look around to see if you can buy any "signed by the author" copies or special editions of the book.

A giant poster of his favourite actress (or band...)? :p

It's not as hard as it sounds. I have 2 GloFish (not goldfish) and used to have 3 until one died a few days ago. They are geneticly altered zebra fish and come in three colors and glow under a black light or a florescent light. As long as the tank has a filter, he will only have to clean it every six months. He could even get an "algae eater." They eat the algae off the tank walls. So, as long as he drops in some fish flakes every other day, they should live for a few months.

If all else fails, how about a pet rock? Pretty cage, and some fake food. Sure will give him a laugh. :P
