I've been beta testing the 2.0 build of SimplyTweet for about a few weeks now, and its excellent. A great thing is that the push notifications are for all direct messages and mentions, not just direct messages and mentions from other SimplyTweet users. I suggest you try the lite version first, which has no ads, just limited features (and no push). If you like it, buy the full version. Another great thing: This dev (MotionObj) ads new features like crazy. You can expect big updates to the app every week or two with great new features.

Dang it. I checked for similar threads before I started composing the thread, but I left my computer for a bit and came back to finish it like 20 minutes later. Guess you posted it while I was away

How does the Free version compare? is the free version worth looking at?

I'd say definitely worth looking at. While it has less features than the paid (obviously) it still has tons of features. I know people who use the lite version as their main twitter app.
I know that currently the lite version doesn't have push, but I would guess it may be updated soon to have some push features, though you may be limited to only a few pushed items a day since its the lite version.

I just discovered the lack of push with the lite version. I wont be buying any other twitter apps(I have twittelator) until one proves the push theory well. Thanks for the info!

Here's a review of 2.0 by Stephen Ingraham, and he says:
Did I say Push Notifications…push notifications that work the way you always expected push to function. I did!
SimplyTweet stands to be the first full featured Twitter app out the door with truely functional Push Notifications.

I've been beta testing as well and I have to say, it's a damn good app. I can also vouch (and I haven't even been testing that long, maybe two weeks) that updates are like crazy and new features are always being added. I love devs that continue to improve their apps.

I'll throw my vote in for SimplyTweet as well. I've been testing for quite a while and can vouch for the constant updates.
Push notifications have been on the money so far as well.

So I upgraded to 2.0. Had a friend @mention me and I didn't get a push notification. Same with a dm. What do I need to do to get it to work?
macbookairman
Jul 18, 2009, 10:28 AM
You have to manually load the DM and mentions timeline once to begin receiving push notifications. See more info from the dev about push here: http://motionobj.com/blog/push-notifications-for-simplytweet

hmmmmm...... well the push worked for me.... i got a DM and it came through just like a text message! i'm disappointed in the themes cuz i thought it would be the bubbles but in different colors... i'd really have liked the pink done in bubbled rather than just the boxes.....
however.... the app won't work on hubby's phone???? it keeps "crashing" out???? he's deleted and redownloaded it several times but it still keeps doing it!?????

Yep there is a bug that causes the app to crash at startup. From the app store description:Known BUG: The application crashes if you load a mentions or direct messages timeline when they are empty. The workaround is to send yourself a mention or direct message (i.e. send yourself one and don't empty the timelines after that).
So he can send himself a DM and mention himself, or go to the settings app and set it so that the DM and mentions timelines don't load at startup.

I've been testing this for a few weeks - works well. It checks for updates around every 5 to 10 minutes, but if you've had the app open it seems to check more often straight after, in case you've got a reply to something you just tweeted. Pretty clever really.
I did a short piece on my blog the other day: Here (http://www.the-iblog.com/2009/07/15/living-on-the-iphone/)

I'm not sure if there's more Fart apps or Twitter apps. Gosh! In the end they all do the same...why is there a need for 20 or more of them. ~_~.

Well, this one pushes, and pushes quite well!
Not for me it doesn't, I have tried two test mentions since purchasing the app and have yet to have one push via SimplyTweet but both of them have been pushed to me (polls every 5 mins) with my custom Prowl PHP script. I made sure I loaded the mentions in SimplyTweet first in case it needed to initialize but still no dice.
Maybe their server architecture isn't up to scratch for the load they are getting from everyone rushing to get "push" Twitter?
EDIT: The pushes finally came through, must be like a 15-20min interval, can hardly call that push. I can't wait until Twitter's Streaming API gets out of Alpha so apps can support true push not this poll every X mins and push kind of push.

SimplyTweet is my best choice. It seem cool to me.Specially the options "Reply to multiple people at once,Proximity Search,Direct messages, including browsing list recipients and autocompletion,Built-in photo viewer" are so much useful. It works smooth.

Here is the devs description from his blog of how simplytweet's push works
How Does it Work
From now on, you will receive push notifications. SimplyTweet currently checks (and push notifications) every 5-10 minutes. This uses up part of your rate limit, so it is intentionally kept slower to not suck up all your quota, and be useful enough, yet not irritating . It also has a bit of smarts to check sooner if you had just received one, since it's likely you'll get one again. If SimplyTweet finds that you have more than 1 mentions or DM, it only pushes 1 notification, for the latest message with a message count. i.e. if you are Obama, you will not get bazillion push notifications. (imagine a push for each and every mention/DM every second!). This is a feature, not a bug.
SimplyTweet also only push notifications for mentions and DMs that are unread. If you have loaded them in SimplyTweet, there will be no push for those mentions and DMs.
Limitation
The application badge count only shows the number of messages in the latest push. It will not show the total unread messages. E.g. if you get a push for 3 messages, don't launch SimplyTweet and then get a push for 2 messages. The badge will read 3 after the first push and 2 after the 2nd push (rather than 5). This is a known limitation.
Push notifications (for all applications) work by the application, in this case SimplyTweet pushing to Apple, who will in turn push to each and individual device. According to Apple's documentation and my own testing, sometimes Apple does not push notifications to your devices right away. There can be a few minutes lag.

I am sure all of them will include push in their next update, then this app will be no different than the other 20.

SimplyTweet has a lot of features that are unique to it, or that aren't common in the other twitter apps on the app store currently. It has photo searching, conversation view (a few other apps have it, but not many), saved searches and views, and more.

so go online and try sending yourself a dm and a mention. that will fix it. This bug is fixed in 2.1 which is already submitted. And i'm beta testing 2.2, and its great.

That has nothing to do with the theme crashing it. It only crashes when I change the theme.

Then email the dev. hboon at motionobj.com
However, I have helped MANY people who have been experiencing crashes of simplytweet, and the DM and mentions one has been the cause of nearly every one so far--even if all you did was change the theme.
