View Full Version : Technology in the Bathroom?

When I move to my new place in a few weeks, I'll have my own private bathroom, used only by myself and when she's around, my girlfriend.
So of course, I'll get to have whatever shower curtain I want. I won't have to deal with my roommate's shampoo, soap, toothbrush, or him stealing my toilet paper.
But it also opens up the possibility of "personalizing" the bathroom with some technology. I remember years ago I had a radio in the bathroom. How many people have a radio or a tv or a computer device of some sort in the bathroom? Or do most people stick to leaving a magazine or book around? I've asked some friends and have gotten mixed responses. Some people feel that music in a bathroom is odd while others routinely take their computers in with them... Has me thinking, and what better group of people to ask about their bathroom decoration choices than a computer forum?

I have never had a reason to have my computer in the bathroom
I think I can pry myself away from it for that long

It's nice to have your own bathroom after having roommates. Is this sort of what you're after? :p

It is essential to have music in my bathroom for my shower- morning routine via ipod, my brother brings in his macbook, but just for music during showers, it doesn't seem that odd until you think about it. Next year i live in a dorm so i'll need to make some adjustments.

It sounds like a good idea until you drop your iPod in the toilet or use one of the electronics with a wet hand. Not worth the risk IMO.

Get one of these. It's the best thing (in the bathroom at least) I've ever used :D.

Music would be nice - maybe an Airport express and some speakers, so you can just stream whatever's playing on your computer? That would be my ideal setup. :)

For me it's music though I'm without something right now. The rest I can do without.

Personally I do enjoy having music playing while I get ready in the morning. Right now I have a roommate so I can't enjoy it every morning but when he isn't around I usually crank up the music from my room (right next to the bathroom) and I can hear it pretty well while I get ready.
If it was my own place I would likely install a speaker system in the bathroom that goes back my sound system therefore I could just amplify whatever is already playing. I see no reason to take my computer into the bathroom nor do I want to invest big bucks into some "bathroom" radio system.

The only technology I need in a bathroom is a toilet.
Oh, and occasionally a shower if I'm feelin' lucky.

Agreed. Maybe put some speakers for your iPod or iPhone to listen to music while you are in there.

Same, but some just take a while. Whenever an old schoolfriend said he needed the toilet we wouldn't see him for half an hour.

An iPhone should fit the bill.

When I have my own bathroom, I'll likely have a shower radio in it(hopefully one that can just read from an iTunes home server or something), but otherwise, I won't keep anything in the bathroom.
To go #2, I take my MBP in with my 98% of the time.

Well, three of us using one bathroom, we all just brought in a roll and used it, rather than trying to pool our money to buy shared rolls...didn't seem that odd to me.

You people who take your computers or iPhones into the crapper got issues. Please make sure you disclose that fact should you ever sell me your used equipment.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a germophobe, I suppose. I'd never use a computer or phone while on the toilet!

Bath tub, shower, toilet, sink, towel rack, TP holder (most importantly TP, plus my wife needs those other thing used monthly). Don't for get soap.

Sometimes I'll take me iPod and a tiny speaker into the bathroom with me when I take a shower...but not often, since I'm usually in the shower for less then 5 minutes, and it isn't worth the song or two I'll hear.

I've got a multi-roll toilet paper dispenser in my bathroom. (I've got 2 dual-roll dispensers.:o) Most of us have ran into the situation where you've ran out of toilet paper. Well that piece of technology save my (_!_) on more than one occasion.;) I'd say it's second only to the toilet as essential bathroom tech.:p

Maybe I'm wrong but I took it to mean that Roommate A would use up all of the toilet paper bought by Roommate B and not replace it by buying more himself. Usually you need to have a system to prevent this from happening.
